SAMFORD MEN’S GOLF STORMS BACK FROM 20 STROKES DOWN TO FINISH FIRST AT SAMFORD INVITE
--- The Bulldogs concluded 54 holes of play tied with Vanderbilt for first place; The teams then competed in three playoff holes with neither squad able to take the lead ---
ONEONTA, Ala. --- The Samford University men’s golf team fired a tournament-low 282 on Tuesday in the final round of the 2010 Samford Invitational to earn a first-place finish along with the Vanderbilt Commodores. The Bulldogs entered the third round of competition in sixth place and trailed the Commodores by 20 strokes with only 18 holes to play.
Samford (298-297-282 = 877) stormed back to force a playoff with Vanderbilt (286-289-302 = 877) as both teams finished regulation tied for first place. After replaying the opening three holes of the Limestone Springs Golf Course, both Samford and Vanderbilt matched the others’ score in each frame and the coaches decided to end the tournament in a tie as darkness approached.
Vanderbilt entered the 2010 Samford Invitational as the No. 33-ranked team in the nation after finishing second in the University of Florida’s prestigious annual tournament a week ago.
“I’m so proud of this team and how they fought back to tie one of the best teams in the nation,” said Samford head coach Woodie Eubanks. “Our guys never gave up and they stood toe to toe with Vanderbilt in the playoff. I’m still at a loss for words because we did this with one junior and four freshmen in the starting five. Today, our freshmen gained some valuable experience and I’m extremely optimistic about the future of the program.”
Samford’s tournament-best score of 282 on Tuesday was ignited by the performances of true freshmen Casey O’Toole and Bill Nabors.
O’Toole, the Bulldogs’ native of Oneonta, Ala., fired a third-round best score of 66 on Tuesday and won the individual title of the 2010 Samford Invitational by seven strokes. O’Toole finished the two-day event with a 54-hole score of 12-under-par 204 (73-65-66), while Kennesaw State’s Jeff Karlsson placed second at 5-under-par 211 (67-70-74).
Vanderbilt’s Trey Delgreco, a native of Birmingham, Ala., earned a third-place finish Tuesday. He carded a third-round score of 71 to tally a 54-hole score of 212 (70-71-71).
Nabors, Samford’s talented true freshman from Decatur, Ala., turned in his best score of the tournament Tuesday with a 68. He improved in each round of the two-day event and finished the 2010 Samford Invitational with a final mark of 227 (82-77-68).
The Bulldogs’ Gabe Hyde tallied the team’s second-place finish Tuesday. Samford’s freshman from Hoover, Ala., carded a third-round score of 76 to earn a tie for 22nd in the final individual standings. Hyde concluded the two-day tournament with a 54-total of 225 (75-74-76).
Samford’s Martin Bunt fired a key score of 72 on Tuesday to help propel the Bulldogs to their first-place finish. Bunt, a junior native of Pensacola, Fla., and the only non-freshman listed in Samford’s starting five, concluded the two-day tournament with a score of 228 (75-81-72). Drew Aimone rounded out the Bulldogs scoring this week with a total of 232 (75-81-76).
“This was a great tournament for our guys and they really worked hard to finish as well as they did,” Eubanks said. “I’m so proud of this team and we’ll celebrate this win for a while, but then we have to go right back to work. We still have a lot of golf to play this season and I feel that we can get even better than we are now.”
Murray State and Kennesaw State both finished tied for third place in the 2010 Samford Invitational with identical 54-hole scores of 878.
The Samford men’s golf team will next be in action March 18-21 as the Bulldogs head to Greenville, S.C., to compete in the 2010 Furman Intercollegiate to be held at the Furman Golf Course.

We came up just short of a top five finish, which was our goal, but if we can tighten up just a little bit, we will be in good shape.”

Georgia Southern next welcomes 15 teams to Statesboro, Ga. as part of the 31st Annual Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational. The three-day tournament will be played at Forest Heights Country Club, March 19-21.
“The team is excited our next tournament is our home tournament,” Mays stated. “We’re looking forward to being part of a great tournament and bringing in a great field of teams to Statesboro next week.”
