Furman Opens Spring Season In Third At John Hayt Collegiate Invitational
Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. -- Austin Reeves carded a 71 to grab a share of second place and help the Paladins into third place with an opening round 296 as the Furman men’s golf team opened its spring season at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational on Sunday morning at the par-72 Sawgrass Country Club.
Reeves, a Greenville, S.C., native, is just two shots off the lead of North Florida’s Joe Byun (69) after notching two birdies and only one bogey in opening round play. Teammate Garland Ferrell carded five birdies to share ninth place at one-over 73 while Furman’s Anthony Aloi and Jack Ulrich each posted an opening round 76.
The Paladins, eight over par, are eight strokes back of tournament host and first round leaders North Florida and two strokes behind second place Duke. TCU, Georgia Southern, Tulsa, Tennessee, UCF, LSU, Coastal Carolina and Alabama round out the top 10 in a 15-team field that includes seven teams ranked in the top 30.
Second round play in the 54-hole tournament is set for Monday morning with final round play slated for Tuesday.

Hudson Leads Cougars to Fourth after First Round of Charleston Shootout
Hollywood, S.C. - John Duke Hudson (Sonora, Texas) fired four birdies en route to a par-72 and a tie for 10th, leading the College of Charleston men's golf team to fourth after the first round of the Wendy's Charleston Shootout being held Feb. 28 - Mar. 1 at the Links at Stono Ferry in Hollywood, S.C. 17th-Ranked Georgia leads the tournament with a 280, with the Cougars in fourth with a 297, just two strokes from second-place Charleston Southern.
Charleston began second-round action immediately after the first, but play was suspended due to darkness and will resume at 9:30 Monday before the third and final round begins.
Two Bulldogs lead for individual medalist honors with Georgia's Harris English and Russell Henley tied for first with a 69 each. Teammate Rob Bennett is third with a 70 as well.
Hudson is tied for 10th, with Coy Breen (San Antonio, Texas) following tied for 15th with a 73. Harrison Moore (Orangeburg, S.C.) is tied for 23rd with his 74 and with a 78 Cabe Prieskorn (Texarkana, Texas) is tied for 53rd. Tim Mitchell (Austin, Texas) is tied for 71st with an 82 after the first round.
Four Cougars are competing as individuals with Elliott Lopez (Chapin, S.C.) leading the way tied for fourth with a 71 after firing three birdies in the first round. Michael Montgomery (Hilton Head, S.C.) is tied for 10th with a 72 and with a 75 Ross Tooley (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) is tied for 31st. Rounding out the Cougars is Seth Stuart (Austin, Texas) who is tied for 39th with a 76.

Sander Leads Eagles to Fifth After Opening Day of John Hayt Collegiate Invitational
Florian Sander fires team low-round 1-under par 71.
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. ? Florian Sander was one of only four individuals to record a sub-par round on the opening day of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational Sunday (Feb. 28.). The redshirt-freshman fought the strong winds and cool temperature to launch a 1-under par 71 at the Sawgrass Country Club, a par-72, 6,895-yard course.
As a team, five Eagles combined for a 13-over 301, which puts them in sole possession of fifth place heading into round two, which tees off Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. Host No. 27 North Florida stands in first after an opening round even-par 288. Meanwhile, No. 30 Duke holds second six strokes back (294) and Furman claims third place at 8-over 296. TCU stands in fourth, three strokes in front of GS, with 298, while the Georgia Southern Eagles round out the top five.
“We were more patient today and, minus a few shots, hit smart shots,” said head coach Larry Mays. “Florian had a great round for us and as a team, we played a very solid round and we are pleased with our start.”
Strong winds played tough for all teams, but the Eagles held strong, led by Sander (Bregenz, Austria) who opened play with seven pars before launching a birdie on 17 to finish the front nine at 1-under. With two birdies on the first three holes of the back nine, Sander was 3-under heading to hole four. But consequence of the windy conditions, Sander recorded two bogeys over the final six holes to finish with a team-best 1-under par 71.
Senior Spence Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.) recorded a four-over 76 using five bogeys, three birdies and a double bogey to end the day. Fulford made the turn at even-par, but struggled on the back nine to finish in a tie for 28th on the day.
One stroke behind Fulford, junior Joe Monte (Chantilly, Va.) and senior Ryan Zabroske (Alpharetta, Ga.) own shares of 39th-place with matching 77s. Monte highlighted his opening round with four birdies, evenly split between the front and back nine, while Zabroske finished the back nine at 1-over after erasing a bogey on two with a birdie on three.
Completing the lineup for Georgia Southern, senior Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.) sits in a 64th-place tie with an 8-over 80. Competing as an individual, junior Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.) finished day one at 6-over 78, in a tie for 51st.
“Today was tough with the wind, but we hung in there well and didn’t give in to the conditions,” stated Mays. “We are looking forward to the second round tomorrow and hopefully we can move up a few spots.
“If we can combine our solid start with the way we’ve been playing in the final rounds, we will be in good shape for the tournament.”
The Eagles begin round two at 8:30 a.m. on Monday from the front nine.
