Davidson's Taylor Ties for Victory at Wexford Plantation Invitational

Taylor Ties For Victory, Davidson Golf Third at Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

 

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - Davidson sophomore Jackson Taylor earned his first collegiate tournament victory by shooting a two-under-par 70 in the final round of the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate on Tuesday. As a team Davidson finished third in the 17-team field behind Wake Forest and tournament host Francis Marion.

 

Taylor shared the victory with Wake Forest's Lee Bedford, as both shot first round 72's and second round 70's to finish at 142, two-under-par. The tournament was shortened to two rounds on the par-72, 6,828-yard Wexford Plantation course due to heavy rain and lightning on Monday.

 

Davidson (296+293=589) finished just six stokes behind tournament champion Wake Forest (293+290=583). The Demon Deacons, ranked 35th in the nation by Golfweek, overcame a four-stroke deficit with a final-round 290 to overtake Francis Marion, which shot a final-round 295 to finish at 584.

 

Taylor sat in a seven-way tie for eighth after shooting a 72 in the first round, but moved into the top slot as one of three golfers to score a 70 on the second day.

 

Freshman John Skeadas tied for the lead after the first day of competition with a 70, but fell into a tie for sixth (144, +2) after shooting a two-over 74 in the final round. The finish is a career best for the Savannah, Ga. native.

 

Junior Christopher Rollins matched his opening round 74 to place in a tie for 17th at 148. Classmate Bobby Urso improved after a difficult first day to place in a tie for 54th at 155.

 

The 'Cats finished ahead of four Southern Conference foes: Wofford (fourth, 297+295=592), Samford (eighth, 297+301=598), Western Carolina (10th, 305+297=602) and Elon (13th, 305+304=609).

 

Davidson will next compete in Taylor's hometown of Wilmington, N.C. in the Seahawk Intercollegiate hosted by UNC Wilmington.

 

 

 

Wofford Men’s Golf Captures Fourth at Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

 

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. ? The Wofford men’s golf team earned a fourth place finish in its first tournament of the 2010 season, the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate, hosted by Francis Marion University.

 

After shooting a first round 297, the team improved its score on Tuesday and recorded a team score of 295 for a 592 tournament total. The tournament was shortened from three rounds to two due to inclement weather along the South Carolina coast Monday.

 

Freshman Mark Joye led the Terriers, following a day-one score of 71 with a day-two par 72. His tournament score of 143 tied for third individually. Senior Garrett Medeiros tied for seventeenth with a score of 148.

 

Senior Mike McKenzie improved his round one score by four shots on Tuesday, recording a 73 in the second round and finishing tied for 25th. Sophomore Zach Capps tied for 33rd with a tournament total score of 151.

 

With a team score of 592, the Terriers finished ahead of Southern Conference opponents Samford, Western Carolina and Elon.

 

The Terriers will next compete at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate, March 7-9 in Aiken, S.C.

 

 

 

 

WCU Men’s Golf Rallies to 10th-Place Finish at Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

Ricky Stout leads Catamounts with a 12th-place finish in spring opener

 

Hilton Head, S.C. ? Western Carolina posted the eighth-best score in the final round on Tuesday, shooting 297 for a two-round total of 602 to rally to a 10th-place finish at the spring season-opening Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. The event was originally scheduled for three rounds, but inclement weather forced the opening day to be shortened from 36 to just 18 holes on Monday.

 

Senior Ricky Stout led the Catamounts, finishing in a two-way tie for 12th after following up his two-over 74 on Monday with an even-par 72 over the final 18 holes. Classmate Drew Miller carded a three-over 75 on Tuesday to finish tied for 22nd, while freshman Trey White posted a 25th-place finish after trimming two strokes of his opening day 76 to shoot 74 for a total of 150.

 

White ranked tied for second with 29 pars over the 36-hole event, while Miller was tied for second in par 5 scoring at three under with a stroke average of 4.63 on the course’s longest holes. As a team, WCU carded 112 pars over the two round event.

 

Rounding out WCU’s squad, Kyle Wilson lowered his opening round score by five strokes to shoot 76 in the final round with a two-day score of 157 to place tied for 64th while Jonathan Davies fired consecutive rounds of 84 to finish at 168, 86th overall.

 

Paced by co-individual champion Lee Bedford, Wake Forest edged host Francis Marion by a stroke, 583-to-584, to win the team championship. SoCon-members Davidson (589) and Wofford (592) finished third and fourth, respectively, with William & Mary rounding out the top five at 594.

 

Bedford finished tied with Jackson Taylor of Davidson at two-under 142.

 

Western Carolina returns to action on March 11 through 14 at the Seminole Intercollegiate hosted by Florida State at the Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla.

 

 

 

Elon Places 13th at Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Wake Forest shot a second-round 290 to overcome a four-stroke deficit and claim the team title of the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate on Tuesday.  Elon's squad finished 13th in the field of 17 with a score of 609 (305-304) and was led by Scott Hockemeyer's 146 (74-72).
 
Hockemeyer finished the Phoenix's first spring tournament in a tie for 12th place, just four strokes behind co-medalists Jackson Taylor of Davidson and Lee Bedford of Wake Forest.
 
Jayson Judy was Elon's second finisher, placing in a tie for 54th with a 155 (77-78).  Phil Bartholomew shot a 73 during his final round on Tuesday to finish with a two-round score of 155 to also sit tied for 54th.
 
Stephen Dressell's 157 (76-81) placed him in a 64th-place tie.  The Phoenix's field was rounded out by Tanner Norton whose score of 162 (78-84) put him 78th in the 84-golfer field.
 
Francis Marion finished just one stroke behind Wake Forest in the team standings to place second.  Davidson (589), Wofford (592) and William & Mary (594) also placed in the top five.
 
The Phoenix placed ahead of Texas Pan American (611), Connecticut (614), George Mason (615) and Cleveland State (662).
 
Elon will be back on the course March 8-9 at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Invitational in Aiken, S.C.

 

 

SAMFORD MEN’S GOLF FINISHES EIGHTH AT WEXFORD PLANTATION INTERCOLLEGIATE

FLORENCE, S.C. --- The Samford University men’s golf team closed out its first tournament of the 2010 spring season Tuesday with an eighth-place finish at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion University at the Country Club of South Carolina. The Bulldogs carded a final team score of 598 (297-301) at the two-day event.

 

In the second round of play, Samford fired a total team score of 301, only four shots behind its first-round mark of 297. The Bulldogs were led Tuesday by true freshmen Drew Aimone and Bill Nabors who both tallied team-low scores of 74. Aimone finished the tournament with a total score of 149, while Nabors carded a final mark of 154.

 

Junior Martin Bunt turned in Samford’s best overall score of the tournament. The Bulldogs’ native of Pensacola, Fla., finished the two-day competition tied for 17th place in the individual standings with a 36-hole mark of 148 (71-77).

 

Samford’s Aimone added the team’s second best score of the tournament, while fellow true freshman Casey O’Toole followed with a two-round total of 150 (74-76). Senior Jeremy Cox rounded out the Bulldogs’ scoring Tuesday with a 36-hole score of 156 (77-79).

 

Wake Forest won the team title of the 2010 Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate by a single stroke over Francis Marion University. Wake Forest rallied for a team score of 290 on Tuesday to overtake the first-place position with a final mark of 583. Francis Marion turned in a second-round mark of 295 to finish in second place at 584.

 

Davidson’s Jackson Taylor and Wake Forest’s Lee Bedford tied for the individual title of the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. Both players finished the 36-hole event with identical scores of 142 (72-70).

 

The Samford University men’s golf team will next be in action on March 8-9 as the Bulldogs play host to the 2010 Samford Invitational being held at the Limestone Springs Golf Club located in Oneonta, Ala.

 

 

 

Chapman's third 69 leads UNCG at Puerto Rico Classic

 

RIO GRANDE, P.R. - UNC Greensboro shot a final round 289, led by Colin Chapman's third consecutive round of 69, to close out the Puerto Rico Classic on Tuesday.

 

Chapman, a sophomore from Canton, N.C., finished sixth in the 75-player field by equalling his season-low for the third consecutive day. His tournament score of 207 was a season-best, as well.

 

Kevin Tway, son of PGA golfer Bob Tway, won the individual title. The Oklahoma State star finished at 199 after a final round 66, three shots better than Cody Gribble of Texas.

 

Texas won the team title with a score of 822, six shots better than Oklahoma State. Clemson was third at 843. UNCG finished 15th with a score of 881.

 

The Spartans return to action on March 12 when they go to the Pinehurst Intercollegiate at Pinehurst No. 8.
