Men's Golf Teams Continue Tournament Play

Skeadas Tied for First, 'Cats Third After First Day at Wexford

 

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. ? Davidson freshman John Skeadas sits in a three-way tie for first place after a rain-shortened first day of the fifth-annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Golf Tournament hosted by Francis Marion. As a team, the Wildcats are third behind Francis Marion and Wake Forest.

Monday's schedule was cut from two rounds to one due to heavy rain and lightning. The tournament is being played on the par-72, 6,828-yard Wexford Plantation course.

Skeadas shot a first-round two-under-par 70 to finish the day in a three-way tie with Ciaran McKenna (Francis Marion) and Ben Westley (De Paul). Davidson (296, +8) is seven strokes behind Francis Marion, who lead the tournament with a one-over 289. Three-time Wake Forest (293, +5) sits in second. The ?Cats lead four Southern Conference foes: Samford (tie fourth, 297 +9), Wofford (tie fourth, 297, +9), Elon (tie 14th, 305 +17) and Western Carolina (tie 14th, 305, +17).

Sophomore Jackson Taylor also placed in the top 10 and is locked in a seven-way tie for eighth at an even 72. Junior Christopher Rollins shot a two-over 74, while junior Bobby Urso shot an eight-over 80.

The final round will be played on Tuesday beginning at 8:30 a.m.

 

 

 

UNCG’s Chapman cards second straight 69 at Puerto Rico Classic

 

GREENSBORO, N.C.? UNC Greensboro’s Colin Chapman fired his second consecutive round of 69 on Monday to sit in a tie for seventh entering Tuesday’s final round at the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue University.

 

The Spartans are in 15th place in the team standings after carding a 298 on Monday for a 36-hole total of 592. Texas is at the head of the team leaderboard with a score of 546, shooting a blistering 269 on Monday. The Longhorns are eight shots ahead of second-place Oklahoma State and 15 better than third-place Clemson.

 

Chapman, a sophomore from Franklin, N.C., equaled his season-best score for the second straight day and sits seven shots off the lead in a four-way tie for seventh place. Texas’ Cody Gribble leads at 12-under par 132, one shot ahead of Georgia’s Harris English and Oklahoma State’s Kevin Tway, son of PGA Tour member Bob Tway. Chapman is tied with Clemson’s Ben Martin, Northwestern’s David Lipsky, and Texas’ Dylan Frittelli at six-under par 138.

 

Chapman, who transferred last summer to UNCG from Division III Oglethorpe College, will go looking Tuesday for his first Topp 10 finish as a Spartan.

Tuesday’s final round will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. Atlantic time.

Men’s Golf Opens Spring Season at Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

 

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. ? The Wofford men’s golf team opened its 2010 season competing at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate, hosted by Francis Marion University.

 

Monday's schedule was cut from two rounds to one due to heavy rain and lightning along the South Carolina coast. The tournament is being played on the par-72, 6,828-yard Wexford Plantation course.

 

After the first round, the Terriers were tied for fourth place with fellow Southern Conference member Samford. Wofford notched a team score of 297 in the 17-team tournament.

 

Freshman Mark Joye paced the team with a first round one-under par 71, good for a fourth place tie. Senior Garrett Medeiros recorded a first-round score of 74 and tied for 20th individually. Sophomore Zach Capps followed with a 75 and Mike McKenzie rounded out the Terrier foursome with a first-round score of 77.

 

The final round will be played on Tuesday beginning at 8:30 a.m. 

 

 

 

 

Catamount Men’s Golf Tied for 14th at Shortened Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

Second ? and now final ? round to be played on Tuesday

 

Hilton Head, S.C. ? Seniors Ricky Stout and Drew Miller each posted a two-over 74 to lead Western Carolina on Monday at the weather-shortened Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. The Catamounts recorded a 17-over 305 to stand in a two-way tie with Southern Conference foe, Elon, but are just four strokes out of the top 10 after 18 holes.

 

Because of heavy rains and lightning on Monday, the first day was shortened from two scheduled rounds to just one round. The final round will be played Tuesday.

 

Stout shot 35 on the front nine and 39 on the back for 74, while Miller shot 38-36 to reach his opening round total to tie his teammate. Freshman Trey White was two strokes back in a tie for 41st at 76, with sophomore Kyle Wilson in a two-way tie for 74th after an opening round 81. Freshman Jonathan Davies rounded out the Catamount five with 84.

 

Also for WCU, playing as an individual, senior Benjy Davey is tied for 64th after shooting 79 on Monday,

 

Davidson’s John Skedas, Ciaran McKenna of Francis Marion and Ben Westley each shot a two-under 70 on Monday to lead a four-way tie for fourth by a stroke after the first round. McKenna paced the host Francis Marion Patriots to the first round lead over Wake Forest with a one-over 289, four strokes ahead of the second-place Demon Deacons at 293. Davidson (296) is third followed by a two-way tie between SoCon members Samford and Wofford, one stroke in arrears at 297.

 

 

 

Phoenix Sits 14th After One Round of First Spring Event

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Battling through poor conditions during Monday's first round of the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate, the Elon Phoenix men's golf team shot a 305 to sit in a tie for 14th among the 17 participating programs.  Scott Hockemeyer's round of 74 led the Phoenix.  Hockemeyer's +2 placed him in a tie for 20th among the 90-golfer field.
 
Two strokes behind Hockemeyer was Stephen Dressel whose 76 was good enough to tie for 41st.  Jayson Judy sits in a 47th-place tie following his 77 on day one.
 
Elon's field was rounded out by Tanner Norton (T-57th; 78) and Phil Bartholomew (T-76th; 82).
 
Three players sit tied atop the individual leaderboard after carding a 70 in Monday's first round.  Davidson's John Skeadas, Ciaran McKenna of Francis Marion and De Paul's Ben Westley all hold the lead.
 
Host Francis Marion shot a 289 to pace the field.  FMU holds a four-stroke lead over Wake Forest who sits second.  Davidson (296), Samford (297) and Wofford (297) round out the top five.
 
The Phoenix is tied with Western Carolina with the 305 and is just four strokes out of ninth.  Trailing Elon and WCU are Richmond (306) and Cleveland State (335).
 
Due to the weather, Monday's scheduled 36 holes was shortened to just 18.  The teams will play another 18 holes on Tuesday.
