Jacksonville Rallies to Win Hummingbird Intercollegiate; WCU Places 13th
Adam Hoffman of Vanderbilt wins individual medalist honors
Sapphire, N.C. - Jacksonville carded the third-lowest, 36-hole team score in tournament history to rally from third place to win the 2010 Hummingbird Intercollegiate, hosted by Western Carolina at the par-71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley. The Dolphins carded a two-day, two-round score of 563 to claim the team championship by six strokes over the 18-team field on Tuesday afternoon.
Jacksonville becomes the fifth different team to claim team championship honors in the five-year history of the tournament at the beautiful mountain course in Sapphire.
First-round leader, Vanderbilt, finished as the runner-up despite carding the third-lowest, team single-round at 277 on Monday. It is the third-time in four years of competition in the event that the Commodores have finished as the runner-up. Kentucky finished in third place at 573, 10 strokes off the pace, while Furman and Gardner-Webb both were one stroke in arrears, tied for fourth at 573.
WCU finished 13th overall after a two-day total of 590.
Vanderbilt's Adam Hofmann, who led the field after Monday's opening round with a 66, finished at seven-under 135 to record the third-lowest individual score in tournament history. He is the second Commodore men's golfer to win the WCU-hosted event, joining Hudson Johnson who claimed top honors back in 2008. Hofmann finished tied for fourth with 25 pars and nine birdies to win by two strokes over the second-place tie between Matt Nagy from Kennesaw State and Stephen Healy of Jacksonville at 137.
The Catamounts were paced by a trio of freshmen, led for the second-consecutive tournament by Jack Walsh who posted his second-straight top 10 finish overall. Walsh fired rounds of even-par 71 and one-under 70 to shoot 141, finishing tied for sixth-place, his career-best finish. A native of Lawrenceville, Ga., Walsh, recorded a team-best eight birdies in the tournament, shooting even par on the par-4 holes.
Freshmen Greg Bunner and Collin Witiak finished tied for 42nd and 60th, respectively, with final scores of 148 and 151. Both Bunner and Witiak carded 24 par scores over the 36-holes with the latter shooting a one-under on the par-3 holes.
Rounding out WCU's scorers were junior Kyle Wilson in a tie for 65th at 152 and sophomore Trey White one stroke back at 153, tied for 74th overall.
Playing unattached as individuals for WCU, freshman Michael Fitzgerald placed tied for 65th with a two-day total of 152, followed by Jonathan Davies (t-92nd, 160) and Ronnie Garcia (t-96th, 167).
The hosting of what has become an annual tournament for Western Carolina concludes the fall season for the Catamounts. The squad will return to action on February 21-22 at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C.
Men's Golf Finishes Third at Kiawah Intercollegiate
CHARLESTON, S.C. - John Duke Hudson (Sonora, Texas) fired a 71 in the first and second round to finish 10th, leading the College of Charleston men's golf team to third at the Kiawah Intercollegiate held Nov. 1-2 at the Turtle Point Golf Course on Kiawah Island, S.C. Indiana won the tournament with a three-round score of 877, while Campbell came in second with an 891. Charleston finished with a 907.
Longwood's Michael Young took individual medalist honors with a 216. Indiana's David Mills and Campbell's Matt Toot tied for second with a 218 each.
"I am happy with the way our kids finished the fall season," said head coach Mark McEntire. "We haven't played that well and still finished in the top three in three of our five tournaments this fall. I am excited for the spring to see what happens when we put everything together."
Hudson used four birdies and just three bogeys to finish with a 71 in third round action. He totaled a 223 in three rounds to finish 10th. Seth Stuart (Austin, Texas) tied for 16th with a 228, while Coy Breen (San Antonio, Texas) tied for 27th with a 232. Alex Ellis (Austin, Texas) finished tied for 32nd with a 233, while Elliott Lopez (Chapin, S.C.) tied for 29th with a 235.
Parker Allen (Blythewood, S.C.) competed as an individual and tied for 11th with a 224, while Ross Tooley (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) tied for 27th with a 232.
The Cougars are off for the winter and will resume the season this spring at the Pat hicks Thunderbird Intercollegiate Feb. 14-15 at Sunbrook Golf Club in St., George, Utah.

Trio Guides Paladins To Fourth Place Finish At Hummingbird Intercollegiate
Sapphire, N.C. - Three Paladins posted rounds of par or better on Tuesday to help the Furman men's golf team climb to a fourth place finish at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
Junior Matt Broome (73-70=143) and sophomore Johnny Kyger (76-70=146) each carded a final round 70 and junior Anthony Aloi fired an even-par 71 as Furman (289-285=574) climbed from eight place to a share of fourth with the second best score of the day, a one-over par 285. The Paladins finished 11 strokes behind tournament champion Jacksonville (284-279=563) while Vanderbilt (277-292=569) placed second and Kentucky (285-288=573) claimed third place. Gardner-Webb shared fourth place with Furman.
Aloi and Broome grabbed a share of 13th place with their strong finishes to the 36-hole tournament. Aloi, a native of Plainsboro, N.J., notched a birdie on the front nine and eagled No. 14 to improve on a first round 72 while Broome collected three birdies during the final round. Kyger recorded four birdies and an eagle at No. 14 during Tuesday's final round to place 27th.
Vanderbilt's Adam Hofmann (66-69=135) followed an opening round 66 with a two-under 69 on Tuesday to hold onto individual medalist honors. Stephen Healy of Jacksonville and Matt Nagy of Kennesaw State shared second place at five-under.
The fourth place finish concluded Furman's fall schedule. The Paladins return to action on February 21-22, at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C.

Dressel Finishes Sixth; Elon Seventh at Hummingbird Intercollegiate
SAPPHIRE, N.C. -- Stephen Dressel fired a two-under score of 69 during Tuesday's final round of The Hummingbird Intercollegiate to place in a tie for sixth individually and lead the Elon men's golf program to a seventh-place showing. The tournament was the final one of the fall season for the Phoenix.
During Tuesday's round, Dressel posted two birdies and an eagle while making par on 14 holes. Dressel finished the two days with a score of 141 (72-69).
After a one-under 70 on Monday, Tanner Norton lost six strokes off his score on Tuesday, carding a 76 during the final round for a total score of 146. Norton finished in a tie for 27th among the 99 golfers in the field.
Scott Hockemeyer placed in a tie for 33rd after posting a score of 147 (73-74) over his two rounds. Leif Neijstrom carded a two-round mark of 152 (78-74) to place in a tie for 65th while John Somers shot a 153 (73-80) to place 74th in the final standings.
Vanderbilt's Adam Hofmann took home the individual crown with sub-par rounds of 66 and 69 for a score of 135. He defeated Kennesaw State's Matt Nagy and Jacksonville's Stephen Healy by two strokes.
Vanderbilt saw its team lead vanish on day two to a charging Jacksonville squad that fired a final round of 279. Coupled with Monday's total of 284, the Dolphins claimed the team title with a five-under mark of 563. The Commodores placed second with a score of 569 (277-292). The rest of the top five consisted of Kentucky (285-288--573), Southern Conference foe Furman (289-285--574) and Gardner-Webb (286-288--574).
Elon finished ahead of league rivals Samford (T9th; 294-291--585), Wofford (11th; 283-303--586), host Western Carolina (291-299--590) and Appalachian State (16th; 302-302--604) in the 18-team field.
The Phoenix will break until February 21 when it participates in the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C.
Terriers Slip to 11th in Final Round of Hummingbird Intercollegiate
SAPPHIRE, N.C. -- The Wofford College men's golf team fell from second to eleventh in the final round of The Hummingbird Intercollegiate on the par-71 6,767 yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
After the opening round, The Terriers sat in second play with a one-under, 283, and trailed leader Vanderbilt, who shot a 277. In round two, Wofford shot a team score of 303 to fall to 11th with an overall score of 584 for +11.
Individually, Mark Joye led the Terriers with rounds of 71 and 73 for a 144 (+2). Brent Whitehead followed with a 71 and a 75 for a 146, while Chandler Brazeal, who shot an opening round 68, posted a score of 79 in the final round for a 147. Zach Capps completed the Terrier scorers with rounds of 73 and 76 for a total of 149.
The Hummingbird Intercollegiate was the Terriers final tournament of their fall season. They will tee off again in the spring with the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate on February 21 through February 22.
Men's Golf Concludes Fall Season at Hummingbird Intercollegiate
CASHIERS, N.C. - Darren Cook (Boone, N.C./Watauga) matched his lowest round of the season and placed 13th at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate with a 72-71=143 (+1) to pace Appalachian State University men's golf. The Mountaineers placed 16th overall with a 302-302=604 (+36).
Josh Nichols (Kernersville, N.C./Salem Baptist Christian) tied for 65th at 75-77=152 (+10) while senior Dustin Hudson (Hildebran, N.C./East Burke) carded an 80-75=155 (+13) for 82nd place.
Colin Hobbs (McKinney, Texas/Newman College) was one stroke back in 87th place at75-81=156 (+14) and Jay Brown (Stoneville, N.C./Dalton L. McMichael) fired an 80-79=159 (+17) for 91st place.
