Terriers Shoot One-Under Par on Day One of Hummingbird Intercollegiate

SAPPHIRE, N.C. -- Three of Wofford's four scorers are even par or better at the The Hummingbird Intercollegiate on the par-71 6,767 yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley where the Terriers currently sit in second place with a team score of one-under par (283) after the opening round.

The Terriers' one-under, puts them six shots behind tournament team leader Vanderbilt (277), from the SEC.  Wofford sits one shot ahead of third place Jacksonville University (284) and two shots ahead of another SEC team Kentucky (285).  Wofford is also head of five other Southern Conference schools in the tournament.  Elon, Furman and Western Carolina 288, 289 and 291 respectively.  Samford finished day with a 294 and Appalachian State ended with a 302.

Individually, Chandler Brazeal leads the Terriers with a score of 68 (-3) and sits in a tie for third place.  Mark Joye and Brent Whitehead both turned in a score of 71 for even par and are in a tie for 14th place.  Zach Capps was the final Terrier scorer with a 73 (+2) after the opening round. 

Brazeal fired a tournament high 15 pars in the round, and Brent Whitehead leads the field in par-five scoring (-3).  Whitehead had an eagle and a birdie to earn the three under.

Round two will resume Tuesday.

 

Norton Goes One-Under as Elon Sits Seventh at Hummingbird Intercollegiate

SAPPHIRE, N.C. -- Tanner Norton shot a one-under 70 to sit in a tie for eighth individually during the first round of The Hummingbird Intercollegiate tournament hosted by Western Carolina at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley on Monday.  His performance has helped the Elon Phoenix men's golf program to seventh place after the first day of action.

Norton went two-under on the par-five holes on the day.

Stephen Dressel was also two-under on the par-fives over his 18 holes on day one and carded a first-round score of 72 to sit in a tie for 24th among the field of 99 golfers.  One stroke back of Dressel were both John Somers and Scott Hockemeyer  who are tied for 36th with a round of 73.  Somers totaled five birdies on the day while Hockemeyer was two-under on the par-five holes.

Rounding out the Elon contingent was Leif Neijstrom who fired a round of 78 to sit in a tie for 82nd.

The Vanderbilt duo of Adam Hofmann (66) and Trey DelGreco (67) sit one-two atop the leaderboard with a round to play.

Vanderbilt also leads the team standings after posting a team total of 277 on day one.  The Commodores lead Southern Conference rival Wofford (283) by six strokes.  The rest of the top five consists of Jacksonville (284), Kentucky (285) and Gardner-Webb (286).  Between Elon and the top five is Kennesaw State who posted a score of 287 on Monday.

Elon sits ahead of league foes Furman (8th; 289), Western Carolina (9th; 291), Samford (12th; 294) and Appalachian State (T16th; 302) in the 18-team field.

Neijstrom will be the first Phoenix player to tee off during Tuesday's final round.  He hits the course at 9:18 a.m.  Somers, Hockemeyer, Dressel and Norton all tee off in nine-minute increments following Neijstrom.

 

Furman Men's Golf In Eighth After First Round Of Hummingbird Intercollegiate

Sapphire, N.C. - J.B. Murphy carded an even-par 71 on Monday to grab a share of 14th place and help the Furman men's golf team into eighth place after 18 holes at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley.

Murphy, a native of Columbia, S.C., recorded birdies at No. 6 and No. 12 and posted an eagle at the par-five No. 14 to lead the Paladins to a first round five-over 289.  Junior Anthony Aloi notched a one-over 72 while junior Matt Broome and sophomore Matt Brown each registered a two-over 73.  Redshirt freshman Greg Carrier, playing as an individual, fired an opening round 72 on Monday.

Vanderbilt carded a first round 277 to hold a six-stroke lead over second place Wofford after 18 holes.  Jacksonville, Kentucky and Gardner-Webb rounded out the top five in the 18-team tournament.  The Commodores' Adam Hofmann fired a five-under 66 to hold a one-stroke lead in the individual standings over teammate Trey DelGreco.

Final round action in the Hummingbird Intercollegiate is set for Tuesday morning.
