Brazeal Finishes Second, Terriers Take Third at Rees Jones Intercollegiate

DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. -- Freshman Chandler Brazeal fired a 36-hole score of 144 with a 75 in round one and a tournament low of 69 in round two of the Rees Jones Intercollegiate at Haig Point's par-72 Haig course to finish second in the tournament and give the Wofford College Terriers a third place team finish.

Brazeal finished one shot off of the tournament with his even par score in the two-day event.  It was the second time Brazeal had finished even par in as many collegiate tournaments, however he set a new 18-hole low with his second round score of 69.

Zach Capps cracked the top ten with a 36-hole score of 150 (+6), which was good enough for eighth.  He shot a 76 on day one and responded with a 74 on day two.  Brent White followed with a 153 (+9) with rounds of 80 and 73. Mark Joye rounded out the scorers for the Terriers with a 158 (+14).  Joye shaved ten strokes off his first round score of 84 with a score of 74 in round two.

The Terriers turned in a team score of 605 to finish at +29, which was 12 strokes off of tournament winner Kennesaw State.

Wofford will tee off again October 10th in the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate.

 

Catamount Men's Golf Finishes 13th at Wolfpack Invitational

Kyle Wilson, Jack Walsh finish tied for 32nd to lead WCU

Raleigh, N.C. - Freshman Jack Walsh posted his second-consecutive, even-par round of 71 on Tuesday while junior teammate Kyle Wilson finished strong with a one-over 72 to lead Western Carolina to a 13th-place finish overall at the Wolfpack Invitational, hosted by North Carolina State at the par-71, 7,358-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course.

Both Walsh and Wilson placed in a tie for 32nd overall with two-day totals of 221 in helping the Catamounts climb from 17th-place after the opening round to 13th in the final standings, just six strokes in arrears of 28th-ranked Campbell. Walsh, a native of Lawrenceville, Ga., carded his career-best, 54-hole score and best overall finish while Mount Airy's Wilson matched his second-lowest, three-round career score.

Led by individual medalist Albin Choi, the host Wolfpack claimed the team championship by four strokes over fellow ACC-member and Triangle-rival, Duke. North Carolina State put all four of its overall scorers inside the top 13 to finish at 844 while the Blue Devils had four finishers inside the final top 19 to shoot 848. Perennial power, Wake Forest, was third, 11 strokes off the winning pace at 855 with Maryland (858) and East Carolina (863) rounding out the top five.

Choi led all three rounds and edged Wake Forest's Lee Bedford by a single-stroke in the final individual standings, six-under 207 to five-under, 208. Another Demon Deacon, Evan Beck, and Duke's Brinson Paolini finished tied for third, three strokes off the pace at 210, with Josh Brock of UNC Wilmington, David Watkins of East Carolina, and North Carolina State's Mark McMillen and Brandon Detweiler rounding out the top five positions.

Starting on the back nine with set tee times, Walsh incurred two bogies through is first four holes to stand at two-over before a birdie on the par-4, No. 16 moved him to one-over where he made the turn. Consecutive birdies on the first two holes of his final nine holes dropped the freshman to one-under par, but a bogey on the par-3, sixth hole pushed him back to even where he finished the final three holes.

Wilson scored one-under on the first and last holes of the back nine and made his turn at two-under par on Tuesday. The junior then scored birdie on No. 1 to drop to his tournament-low, three-under, before back-to-back bogies moved him to just one-under through 12 holes played. After scoring birdie on the par-4 fourth, a double-bogey on No. 5 moved him back to even par. Wilson then played out the remainder of his tournament with a birdie and consecutive bogies on the final two holes to slip to one-over, 72.

Freshman Collin Witiak fell into a tie for 47th overall after shooting five-over, 76, on Tuesday for a three-round total of 224. His troubles started five holes into his final round, scoring three-straight bogies and a double-bogey with a lone birdie sandwiched in between to make the turn at four-over, finishing his front nine at one-over.

Rounding out WCU's finishers were sophomore Jonathon Davies with an eight-over, 79, in a tie for 73rd and junior Ryan Booth in 86th after shooting 80 in the final round.

Western Carolina returns to action in two weeks at the Davidson Intercollegiate at the River Run Country Club. The 54-hole event will feature two rounds of 18 holes on Monday, Oct. 18 followed by the final round on Tuesday, Oct. 19.

The Catamounts will return to the Davidson Intercollegiate for the first-time since 1999. WCU played in Davidson's tournament five-straight seasons from 1995 through '99, twice playing at this year's host site, the River Run Country Club. In 1995, WCU finished tied for third in the final team standings and was tied for seventh the following year in '96 before the next two year's events were held at a different course.

 

ASU Men's Golf Finishes 13th at Rain-Shortened CSU Invite 

BEACHWOOD, Ohio - After Tuesday's third round was cancelled due to rain, Appalachian State University men's golf finished 13th at the Telich Sun Life Financial/CSU Invitational with a 307-311=618 (+50) in two rounds on Monday.

Senior Dustin Hudson led the Mountaineers at the competition with a 78-75=153 (+11) to tie for 37th place while Daniel Walsh was just a stroke back in 43rd place at 76-78=154 (+12).

Josh Nichols carded a 79-76=155 (+13) to tie for 46th place. Darren Cook shot ASU's lowest single-round score of the event with a 74-82=156 (+14), good for 51st place.

Web Grubb made his ASU debut with an 85-84=169 (+27) to finish 79th.

Malone University won the event at 591 (+13) and boasted the top two individuals at the event as well. Justin Lower was the medalist at 141 (-1) and Richie Schembechler took second place at 142 (E).

No other Southern Conference schools participated in the event, hosted by Cleveland State at Canterbury G.C.

Appalachian's fall slate continues on October 18-19 at the Davidson Invitational.
