Final round set for Tuesday morning with set tee times
Raleigh, N.C. - The Western Carolina men's golf team trimmed 11 strokes off its opening round 309 to shoot 289 in Monday's second round, advancing two spots to 15th-place overall after 36 holes at the Wolfpack Invitational, hosted by North Carolina State at the par-71, 7,358-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
The final round of the Wolfpack Intercollegiate starts Tuesday morning at 8:00 am with set tee times. Live scoring is available for the final round at www.GolfStatResults.com.
Following Monday morning's first round, WCU was five strokes out of 15th in 17th-place after recording a team 309 in the first round. However, the squad's second round 289 represented its' lowest team round score of the fall.
The Catamounts are being led by freshman Collin Witiak, who is tied for 44th after rounds of 76 and 72 for a six-over, 148. In his opening round, Witiak made the turn at five-over par and played the back nine even with a birdie on the par-4, 12th and a bogey on the next hole, the par-4, 13th, to finish his first 18 holes at five-over, 76.
In his second round, Witiak, a native of Columbia, S.C., posted four bogies against three birdies to shoot a one-over, 72. He made the turn at one-under and finished up with bogey on the 18th.
Junior Kyle Wilson is tied for 50th overall for WCU, shooting a three-over 74 and four-over 75, one-stroke behind Witiak at 149. After opening the shotgun start Monday morning on hole number two, Wilson was poised to finish his first round at one-over, 72, but a double-bogey on the par-5, No. 1 hole relegated him to three-over, 74. A plus-three start to his second round was capped with three birdies and four bogies over the next 16 holes to shoot 75.
Freshman Jack Walsh rebounded from an eight-over 79 in the opening round to card the best individual round of the tournament thus far for the Catamounts, shooting even-par 71 to close the day. Walsh (150) is tied for 57th, with sophomore Jonathon Davies (152) tied for 71st and junior Ryan Booth (156) tied for 82nd to round out WCU's scorers.
North Carolina State's Albin Choi carded rounds of two-under, 69, and five-under, 66, for a seven-under par (135) to lead the 90-golfer field by three strokes over a four-way tie for second place. Brent Paul of Georgia State, John Popeck of Maryland, David Watkins of East Carolina and Duke's Brinson Paolini all shot four-under, 138, on Monday to stand tied in the runner-up position.
Duke leads the 17-team field at 558 with the host Wolfpack three strokes in arrears in second place at 561. Maryland is third, seven strokes off the pace at 565, with Wake Forest (567) and East Carolina (570) rounding out the top five.
