Broome Finishes Second, Paladins Sixth At ODU/OBX Collegiate
Powells Point, N.C. - Matt Broome (66-68-71=205) carded a final round 71 to secure second place while Furman (285-292-295=872) finished in a tie for sixth place on Tuesday at the Old Dominion/OBX Collegiate at the par-72 Kilmarlic Golf Club.
Broome birdied four holes, including closing his round with a four on the par-five No. 9, to finish nine strokes behind individual medalist Harold Varner (65-66-65=196) of East Carolina. Sophomore Johnny Kyger (76-73-72=221) recorded five final round birdies and shot one-under on the front nine to claim an even-par 72 while Anthony Aloi and J.B. Murphy, who notched his third eagle of the tournament, each shot four-over 76.
East Carolina (270-282-275=827) shot 13-under par over 54 holes to claim a 23-stroke victory over second place Richmond. Liberty, Louisville and Radford rounded out the top five ahead of a sixth place tie between the Paladins and Elon.
Furman returns to action at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate in Cashiers, N.C., November 1-2.

Norton Leads Elon to Tie for Sixth at ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate
POWELLS POINT, N.C. -- Tanner Norton tallied five birdies on his way to a two-under final round of 70 to finish in a tie for 13th with a score of 214 (72-72-70) among the 93-golfer field at the ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate on Tuesday. Norton's performance helped the Elon Phoenix to place in a tie for sixth out of the 18 teams in the field with a three-round total of 872 (298-292-291).
Over his 36 holes, Norton went two-under on the par-four holes and four-under n the par-fives. He also had one eagle and 14 birdies.
Leif Neijstrom's 218 (70-73-75) placed him in a tie for 26th while teammate Jack Adkins finished in a tie for 35th after posting a three-round mark of 220 (72-74-74). Adkins tallied one eagle during his three rounds of play.
In a tie for 46th, Scott Hockemeyer posted his best round of the tournament on Tuesday, carding a 72 to give him a three-day score of 222 (77-73-72). Hockemeyer finished one-under on the par-four holes.
Finally, Clay Holland finished in 86th-place with a score of 238 (75-80-83).
East Carolina's Harold Varner won the individual title by nine strokes over Furman's Matthew Broome. Varner finished with a score of 196 (65-66-65).
ECU also took home the team title after posting a -37 finish of 827 (270-282-275). Richmond's 850 (278-292-280) was good enough for second while Liberty (276-292-288--856) placed third. Louisville (283-287-288--858) and Radford (287-296-282--865) rounded out the top five schools.
The Phoenix finished in a tie for sixth with Southern Conference rival Furman (285-292-295--872). Elon also bested programs such as James Madison (8th; 287-294-293--874), William & Mary (9th; 280-296-299--875), Delaware (12th; 289-299-298--886) and host Old Dominion (14th; 297-296-300--893).
Elon will play one more fall tournament before breaking until February. The Phoenix will next play at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate in Sapphire, N.C. on Nov. 1-2.
