Paladins Hold Sixth Place, Broome Moves Into Second At ODU/OBX Collegiate

Powells Point, N.C. - Furman's Matt Broome (66-68=134) fired a four-under 68 to move into second place and help the Paladins maintain their hold on sixth place after two rounds at the Old Dominion/OBX Collegiate on Monday at the par-72 Kilmarlic Golf Club.

Broome, who started his round at No. 10, birdied four holes in a five-hole stretch on the front nine to shoot four-under over his final nine holes.  With his fourth consecutive round in the 60's, Broome trails tournament leader Harold Varner (65-66=131) of East Carolina by just two strokes through 36 holes.

Sophomore Johnny Kyger (76-73=149) notched seven birdies to shoot a second round 73 while fellow sophomore Matt Brown (74-75=149) finished even par on the front nine to card a three-over 75.

East Carolina (270-282=552) holds a 16-stroke lead over second place Liberty University with Richmond and Louisville 18 strokes off of the lead in a tie for third place.  William & Mary is in fifth place one stroke ahead of the Paladins (285-292=577).

Final round action in the 54-hole tournament is set for Tuesday morning.

Elon Gains Two Places at ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate on Day Two

POWELLS POINT, N.C. -- Leif Neijstrom moved into a tie for 15th place individually after firing a second-round 73 for a two-day total of 143 at the ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate golf tournament.  Neijstrom's performance helped Elon gain two places in the team standings as the Phoenix moved into a tie for seventh with a total score of 581 (289-292) with a round to play.

Neijstrom has gone one-under on the par-three holes and has eight birdies and an eagle through two rounds.  On Monday, Neijstrom eagled the par-five fourth hole.  Through his first nine holes on Monday, Neijstrom was two-under.

Just one stroke back in a tie for 18th in the field of 93 participants is Elon's Tanner Norton.  Norton has carded two rounds of par for a two-day score of 144.  He has shot two-under on the par-four holes and has nine birdies and an eagle through 36 holes of play.

Jack Adkins, who is three-under on the par-five holes, has parred 23 holes and recorded an eagle, followed up Sunday's round of 72 with a score of 74 on Monday.  His total mark of 146 has him tied for 34th with a round to play.

In a tie for 55th is Scott Hockemeyer who knocked four strokes off of his first round score during Monday's round.  Hockemeyer has totaled a score of 150 (77-73) through two rounds of play.  Clay Holland rounds out Elon's field.  Holland is in a tie for 78th with a score of 155 (75-80).

East Carolina's Harold Varner continues to lead the individual field after he shot a 66 on Monday.  Coupled with Sunday's round of 65, Varner has posted a score of 131 through two rounds.  He holds a three-stroke lead on Furman's Matthew Broome (66-68--134).

ECU has begun to pull away from the field of 18 teams after round of 270 and 282 have given the Pirates a 16-stroke edge on Liberty.  ECU (552) and Liberty (276-292--568) lead a top-five that also consists of Richmond (278-292--570), Louisville (283-297--570) and William & Mary (280-296--576). 

SoCon rival Furman (285-292--577) is six strokes ahead of Elon.  The Phoenix is tied for seventh with James Madison (287-294--581).

The third and final round of play will take place on Tuesday from the Kilmarlic Golf Club.
