Wofford, Whitehead Win Davidson Invitational

Whitehead Wins Davidson College Invitational:  Terriers Claim Top Team Honors

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Wofford's Brent Whitehead shot a 54-hole score of 212, four under par, to win the Davidson College Invitational at the par-72, 7,208 yard, River Run Country Club as the Terriers took the team title with a score of 869, five over par.

Whitehead turned in scores of 71, 70 and 71 for a three-round score of 212 to win the event by one stroke over Radford's Weston Eklund.  All three of Whitehead's rounds were under pay for the round. It was the first time this fall a Terrier won finished a tournament atop the standings.

Chandler Brazeal followed with a fifth place finish with scores of 73, 69 and 73 to finish with a score of 215 (-1).  Zach Capps took 15th place with a score of 221.  After struggling through the opening round with a 79, Capps rebounded later in the day by dropping ten strokes to shoot a 69.  He followed that with a final round performance of 73 for a total of 221.  Brent McKenzie finished two strokes back of Capps with a 223 with rounds of 75, 72 and 76.  Mark Joye was the final Terrier in the field as he signed a scorecard with a total of 233.  Joye shot rounds of 77, 76 and 80 in the tournament.  His first score of 77 and Capps final two rounds of 69 and 73 counted towards the Terriers overall team score.

Wofford won the tournament at five over par and finished 13 shots ahead of second place and Southern Conference opponent Western Carolina.  SoCon, foe, College of Charleston took third with a score of 883 (+19).  Other SoCon schools in the tournament where host Davidson, 891 (+27), Elon, 913 (+49) and Appalachian State, 926 (+62).

Wofford will wrap up their fall season with the Hummingbird Intercollegiate in Cashiers, N.C. on November 1.

 

Cougars Finish Third at Davidson College Invitational

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The College of Charleston men's golf team fired a 295 in the final round to finish third at the Davidson College Invitational held Oct. 18-19 at the River Run Country Club in Davidson, S.C.  Wofford took home the trophy with a three-round total of 869, 13 strokes ahead of second-place Western Carolina.  The Cougars were just a stroke back from the Catamounts with an 883.

"I'm happy with a top 10 finish for Seth (Stuart and Coy (Breen)," said head coach Mark McEntire.  "With John Duke (Hudson) and Alex (Ellis) not putting up their usual numbers, it was good to see our number three and four golfers step up to give us a solid third.  If all four of them can put it all together I think we can do well at the Turtle Point."

Terrier Brent Whitehead won individual medalist honors with a four-under par 212, while Radford's Weston Eklund placed second with a 213.

Leading the Cougars was Seth Stuart (Austin, Texas), who finished fifth with a 216.  The Junior fired a 69 in the second round and a 68 in the third to finish even par for the tournament.  Coy Breen (San Antonio, Texas) took 10th with a 218 and tied for 39th was Alex Ellis (Austin, Texas) with a 226.

John Duke Hudson (Sonora, Texas) tied for 43rd with a 227 and tied for 46th was Elliott Lopez (Chapin, S.C.) with a 228.  Competing for the Cougars as an individual was Ross Tooley (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) who tied for 43rd with a 227.

Charleston travels next to Kiawah Island, S.C., Nov. 1-2, for the Kiawah Intercollegiate at Turtle Point Golf Course.

Davidson Golf Concludes Fall Season at River Run

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Wofford claimed the team crown with a five-over par 869 (296+280+293), led by individual medalist Brent Whitehead's four-under par 212 at the men's golf Davidson College Invitational Tuesday at River Run Country Club. Davidson placed seventh at 891 (302+291+298).

Southern Conference rivals Western Carolina (882=293+296+293) and College of Charleston (883=302+286+295) took second and third, respectively, while Cincinnati and Guilford tied for fourth at 886.

USC Upstate (889) edged Davidson by two strokes for sixth place. Radford (893), Gardner-Webb (895), and Presbyterian (897) completed the Top 10. High Point (904) placed 11th, while Southern Conference foes Elon (913) and Appalachian State (926) completed the 13-team field.

Senior Christopher Rollins (White Plains, N.Y.) led Davidson individually in a tie for 15th at 221 (70+77+74), five-over par.

Senior Ryan Crum (South Salem, N.Y.) and freshmen Richard Fountain (Raleigh, N.C.) and Sam Echikson (Brussels, Belgium) all finish tied for 27th place at 224, eight-over par. Fountain and Echikson both carded two-over par 74's in the final round.

Senior Bobby Urso (Beverly Hills, Mich.) also posted a final-round 74 to finish at 225 in a tie for 33rd place in the field of 75 golfers.

Rollins and John Skeadas (Savannah, Ga.) had Davidson's lowest single-round scores of the tournament in the first and second rounds, respectively, at 70, two-under par.

The Invitational took place at the River Run Country Club, a 7,208-yard, par-72 championship course located in Davidson, N.C. The course was recognized by Golf Reporter as one of the finest tracks in the Southeast, and went through a complete renovation in 2007, including a rebuilding of all of the greens, and a laser-leveling of the tee boxes. It is one of the home courses for the Davidson golf program, giving the 'Cats one of the top facilities in the area.

The tournament concluded the 2010 fall season for Davidson. The Wildcats will resume play February 21-22, 2011 at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

 

Western Carolina Men's Golf Finishes Second at Davidson Invitational

Freshman Jack Walsh posts career-best finish to lead Catamounts

Davidson, N.C. - Matching the squad's second-lowest team round of the fall season, the Western Carolina men's golf team rallied to a second-place finish on Tuesday afternoon at the Davidson College Invitational held at the par-72, 7,209-yard River Run Country Club. WCU, which stood fifth entering the final 18 holes, posted a 293 to advance to the runner-up position with a three-round score of 882.

True freshman Jack Walsh finished with a one-under 71 on Tuesday to post his career-best finish, placing tied for seventh to pace the Catamounts. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native finished the 54-hole event at one-over, 217, representing his career-best tournament and his first-career top 10 finish.

Junior Kyle Wilson wrapped up his three-round tournament with a third-consecutive one-over, 73, on Tuesday to finish tied for 11th (219), while freshman Greg Bunner advanced 18 positions in the final standings to place tied for 21st after shooting a one-under, 71, on the final 18 holes. His three-round score of 222 was the best of his young collegiate career.

Rounding out WCU's scorers were sophomore Trey White in a tie for 33rd (225) and freshman Collin Witiak in a tie for 53rd (233). Playing as an individual, junior transfer Ryan Booth finished tied for 27th with a two-day total of 224.

Wofford, which held the lead through 36 holes on Monday, claimed the team title by 13 strokes over Western Carolina, 869-to-882. Fellow Southern Conference foe, College of Charleston, finished third, one stroke in arrears of the Catamounts at 883, with Cincinnati and Guilford College tying for fifth place at 886, 17 strokes off the winning pace.

Opening day leader, Brent Whitehead, claimed medalist honors by one stroke over runner-up, Weston Eklund from Radford. Whitehead carded a four-under 212 through the 54-hole event, with Eklund tying a tournament low round of 68 on Tuesday to move to within a stroke in the final standings, 213.

Western Carolina will return to action in two weeks as it hosts the Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley. The 36-hole event will open with a practice round on Sunday, Oct. 31 with 18 holes on Monday, Nov. 1 and Tuesday, Nov. 2. With two golfers inside the top 15 a year ago including returner Wilson, the Catamounts finished sixth out of the largest field in tourney history. It is the fourth-straight year - and fifth overall - that WCU has hosted an event at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley.

 

SAMFORD MEN'S GOLF: 'DOGS CARD BEST SCORE OF FALL SEASON; PLACE SEVENTH AT APSU TOURNEY

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. --- The Samford University men's golf team finished with its best score of the 2010-11 season Tuesday as the Bulldogs concluded play with a three-round tally of 849 (288-272-289) at the annual F&M Bank Austin Peay Intercollegiate held at The Links at Novadell. Samford finished the tournament tied for seventh place along with former Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Illinois.

Jacksonville State earned the championship title of the 2010 APSU Intercollegiate  and finished the two-day event with a 54-hole score of 822 (283-259-280). Bowling Green placed second with a mark of 831 (281-276-274), while Oakland followed closely in third place with a tally of 840 (276-286-278).

Host school Austin Peay finished fourth in the tournament with a three-round score of 847 (288-280-279). UT Martin and Troy also posted identical tallies of 847 to finish in a three-way tie for the fourth position.

Individually, Samford's Drew Aimone led the way with an 8-under-par 206 (69-67-70). The Bulldogs' sophomore from Savannah, Ga., finished the 54-hole tournament tied for sixth place in the 2010 APSU Intercollegiate with SIU Edwardsville's Neal McCarty.

In Monday's second round of play, Aimone fired his tournament-best score of 67 as Samford carded its best team mark of the 2010-11 campaign. The Bulldogs finished the second round with a school-record score of 16-under-par 272. Also finishing with a team-best round of 67 on Monday was senior Martin Bunt, who concluded the tournament with a 217 (75-67-75).

Samford's Gabe Hyde placed 22nd in the individual standings with a final three-round score of 212 (74-69-69). After posting a first-round score of 74, the Bulldogs' sophomore from Hoover, Ala., closed out the tournament with identical rounds of 69.

Sophomores Casey O'Toole and Bill Nabors closed out the 2010 APSU Intercollegiate with scores of 217 (70 72 75) and 223 (76 69 78), respectively.

The Samford University men's golf team will next be in action Nov. 1-2 as the Bulldogs are slated to conclude their fall schedule at the prestigious 2010 Western Carolina Invite to be held at the Sapphire Valley Country Club in Cashiers, N.C.

 

UNCG finishes sixth at Georgetown Intercollegiate men's golf tournament

BEALSVILLE, MD - Robert Hoadley finished tied for 10th to lead the way as UNCG finished tied for the sixth at the 26th annual Georgetown Intercollegiate.

Hoadley carded a final round 76 as UNCG finished with a round of 300. Justin Clement shot a final round 73 to record a Top 20 finish, placing 18th. Miami-Ohio's Austin Kelly carded a final round 68 to break away from a pack and claim the individual title. He was four shots better than Campbell's Matt Moot and Maryland's John Popeck.

Campbell claimed the team honors, finishing at 847. The Camels were 10 shots better than Miami-Ohio.

UNCG returns to action this weekend when it hosts the prestigious UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate at Forest Oaks Country Club.

Dressel Elon's Top Finisher at Davidson Invitational

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Stephen Dressel posted a final-round score of 73 on his way to a final tournament score of 221 (73-75-73) and a tie for 15th individually at the Davidson College Invitational on Tuesday.  The Elon Phoenix placed 12th with a three-round mark of 913 (309-298-306).  Wofford won the team title with a final tally of 869 (296-280-293).

Elon's next-best showing in the 75-golfer field came from Jack Adkins who placed 51st with a three-round score of 230 (80-73-77).  One stroke back of Adkins was John Somers who finished 52nd with a total mark of 231 (77-75-79).  In a tie for 58th was Tanner Norton (80-75-79--234) while Leif Neijstrom carded a 236 (79-80-77) to place in a tie for 63rd.

Wofford's Brent Whitehead took home the individual title, shooting a four-under 212 (71-70-71) for the tournament.

Directly behind Wofford in the team standings were two Southern Conference rivals - Western Carolina (293-296-293--882) and College of Charleston (302-286-295--883).  Cincinnati (298-295-293--886) and Guilford (293-290-303--886) finished in a tie for fourth.  Two other SoCon programs were in the field.  Host Davidson placed seventh in the 13-team event with a score of 891 (302-291-298) and Appalachian State finished 13th with a mark of 926 (298-313-315).

The Phoenix heads back out on the course for the ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate Invitational held in Kitty Hawk, N.C. on Oct. 24-26.

 

ASU Men's Golf Places 13th at Davidson College Invitational

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Darren Cook (Boone, N.C./Watauga) led the Mountaineers as the sophomore placed 11th with a 71-74-74=219 (+3) at the Davidson College Invitational on Monday and Tuesday. Appalachian State University men's golf placed 13th at 298-313-315=926 (+62).

Behind Cook and his career-best round on Monday, Josh Nichols (Kernersville, N.C./Salem Baptist Christian) carded a 68-78-78=224 (+8) to tie for 27th while Dustin Hudson (Hildebran, N.C./East Burke) tied for 67th at 80-79-82=241 (+25).

Jay Brown (Stoneville, N.C./Dalton L. McMichael) finished three strokes back at 79-83-82=244 (+28) for 70th and Colin Hobbs (McKinney, Texas/Newman Univ.) was 71st with a 82-82-81=245 (+29).

Wofford won the event with an 869 (+5) and fellow Southern Conference foes Western Carolina (882) and College of Charleston (883) took second and third place, respectively. Terrier Brent Whitehead won the individual title with a 212 (-4).

Also competing from the SoCon, host Davidson placed seventh at 891 (+27) and Elon finished 12th with a 913 (+49).

ASU closes out its fall tournament slate in two weeks at the Hummingbird Invitational at Cashiers, N.C. on Nov. 1-2.
