Broome, Furman Men's Golf Claim Big 5 Invitational Title

Philadelphia, Pa. - Junior Matt Broome (66-67=133) fired a final round 67 to claim individual medalist honors and guide the Furman (283-291=574) men's golf team to the Big 5 Invitational title on Sunday afternoon at the par-70 Plymouth Country Club.

Broome, who opened the tournament with a four-under 66 on Saturday, made just one bogey and recorded a pair of birdies on both the front and back nine to finish seven strokes ahead of second place Joseph Barr (70-70=140) of the University of Kentucky.

The Paladins, 11-over par for the tournament, claimed an eight-stroke victory over second place St. John's (292-290=582) with Princeton and Kentucky tying for third place.  Matt Brown (70-76=146) and Johnny Kyger (72-74=146) each shared 19th place for Furman at six-over 146 after shooting 76 and 74, respectively, on Sunday.  Junior Anthony Aloi (76-74=150) added a final round 74.

"The team played great this weekend," said Furman head coach Todd Satterfield.  "This should really help build their confidence going forward.  Matt Broome had a great tournament and we were excited for him to get the win."

The Paladins return to action October 24-26, at the ODU/Kilmaric Invitational in Nags Head, N.C.

UNCG's Chapman fires 65 to help Spartans to fifth at Rod Myers Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. - Colin Chapman fired a second round 65 to tie for the third-best round in school history and Robert Hoadley carded a 68 in the afternoon as UNCG sits fifth after two rounds at the Rod Myers Invitational hosted by Duke University.

Chapman shot a 76 in the morning round, and then caught fire in the afternoon. Having started his day on No. 10, he birdied Nos. 13, 14 and 16 to move to three-under in the second loop. After finishing the back side in 33, he birdied No. 1, but bogeyed at No. 3. Then, Chapman closed the round with birdies at Nos. 6 and 7 and an eagle on No. 9.

Chapman was two strokes shy of the school record of 63 set by Drew Younts in 2007.

Iowa leads the team standings at 563, six shots ahead of NC State. Charloote is third at 572, following by Michigan at 575 and UNCG at 577.

Chattanooga Winds Up in Sixth at Brickyard Collegiate

Steven Fox posted second top 10 of season tying for eighth at -3, 213

MACON, Ga. --- It was a good tournament for the young University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team finishing sixth at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship at the Brickyard at Riverside.  Chattanooga shot 872 (+8) finish one stroke ahead of Clemson in seventh.

It was a consistent effort for the Mocs with rounds of 292, 291 and 289.  That said, it was just short of being a special tourney for a team that features a junior, sophomore and three freshmen.

"We were so close to competing for the title against teams with a lot more experience," said head coach Mark Guhne.  "It's not a crutch or an excuse, but just the opposite.  It really excites me to know how close we are to being really, really good.

"If we can keep getting better like we are, this spring is going to be a lot of fun."

Sophomore Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) recorded his second top 10 of the season ending up tied for eighth at three-over par 213 after today's 71 (-1).  That matches Fox's top 10 total from last season in just four events this year.

True freshman Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) continued his steady play to open 2010-11 with a tie for 21st with a two-over par total of 218.  His 71 (-1) today moved him a stroke ahead of junior Stephan Jaeger (Munich, Germany) who wound up tied for 25th at 219 (+3) with a final round 74 (+3).

Redshirt freshmen Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) and Benni Weilguni (Langelois, Austria) tied for 50th with matching scores of 227.  Weilguni carded a 73 in today's round, while Robb had the drop score of 78.

Georgia claimed the team title with a seven-under par total of 857.  The Bulldogs held off a final round charge by Augusta State which shot -13 on the day, 275, to end up a stroke back at 858 (-6).

UGA's Russell Henley defended his medalist honors with a matching 10-under par 206 as last year.  ASU's Carter Newman was second, four strokes back at 210 (-6).

The Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate is next on the schedule for the Mocs.  It is played next weekend, Oct. 15-17, at the Ridges in Jonesborough, Tenn.
