Eagles Defend Title at SpringHill Suites Intercollegiate
Senior Spencer Fulford ties for fourth with a tournament total 8-under 208.
FLORENCE, S.C. ?Following a 2008 championship in which Georgia Southern set the team tournament course record, top Eagle Spencer Fulford succeeded in 2009 by setting the single-round tournament and competitive course record, helping the Eagles defend their title at the SpringHill Suites Intercollegiate. Georgia Southern shot a 6-under 282 in the third round to capture its first tournament title of the new season with a composite 847 (-17) team total.
“It was an exciting day for the team. The win was a complete team effort and I’m extremely proud of the guys,” said Eagle head coach Larry Mays. “Today, we had all five guys in the running. Last night, I told the team we needed that solid fourth score to win and today, they proved it.”
For the final round, Georgia Southern had four of five players even par or better, led by redshirt-freshman Florian Sander with a 3-under 69. Senior Fulford followed his tournament and competitive course record 63 second round with a 2-under par 70, while junior Joe Monte fired a sub-par 71. Fellow junior Logan Blondell finished the tournament matching his opening round even-par 72. Senior Ryan Zabroske rounded out the Eagles’ lineup, posting a 1-over par 73 on the par 72, 7,062 yard Country Club of South Carolina.
The Eagles entered the final round in third place, five strokes out the lead and took the title edging Southern Conference foe Western Carolina by two strokes, 847-to-849. USC Aiken, who held the advantage after two rounds, slipped into third place shooting a final round 292, completing a tournament-total 852.
Georgia Southern’s 847 tied the fourth best, three-round tournament total in program history, which was set in the 2009 NCAA Southeast Regional.
Capturing individualist honors were Elon’s Jayson Judy and Appalachian State’s Casey Johnson. No tiebreak was played as each participant carded 207s through three rounds to share first place. Fulford and WCU’s Tanner Briele finished one stroke behind the leaders with 208s in third.
Fulford gained one spot on the individual leader board to pace the Eagles with a third-place tie at 8-under 208. The Rocky Mount, N.C., native succeeded his career-low round of 18 in the second round, with a 2-under par 70. Fulford’s final 18 scorecard was highlighted by birdies on 15 and 16. The senior Eagle shared third-place with Western Carolina’s Tanner Briele.
Owning two of the Eagles’ lowest rounds of the tournament, newcomer Sander opened his collegiate career showcasing a ?Top 10’ finish, placing tied for ninth alongside fellow Eagle Logan Blondell. Sander (Bregenz, Austria) posted the Eagles’ low round of the day with a 3-under 69. The redshirt-freshman capped off the final 18 with a birdie on the last hole. Junior Blondell sandwiched even-par 72s around a second-round 69. The Lakeland, Fla., native recorded his first ?Top 10’ finish of the 2009-2010 season with a tournament-total 213 (-3).
Junior Monte (Chantilly, Va.) tied for 30th after bookending his three rounds with 1-under par 71s. The Eagle finished the tournament at 1-over 217. Rounding out Georgia Southern’s lineup, senior Zabroske repeated his second round 73 to finish tied for 42nd. Zabroske, from Alpharetta, Ga., closed out the tournament at 4-over 220.
Competing as an individual, redshirt-junior Coleman Calhoun (Vidalia, Ga.) shot a final round 81 to tie for 81st at 235.
“The whole team played well today. Highlights of the tournament were definitely Spencer’s record round yesterday and Florian putting in two quality rounds,” stated Mays. “Spencer kept us in the game with his 63 yesterday, which is a tough round to back up, and he played well today. Florian’s two solid rounds is huge for us. He became the extra bat in the lineup, solidifying our lineup.”
Georgia Southern has a quick turnaround, returning to the course at the Adams Cup of Newport Collegiate, September 21-22. The tournament takes place in Newport, R.I.
“The team chemistry was around this weekend,” Mays said. “This tournament gave us good momentum heading into the Newport tournament. After our season-opening performance, we were a little down, but this win put us right back on track.”
WCU Men’s Golf Posts Runner-Up Finish at Spring Hill Suite Intercollegiate
Tanner Briele finishes third to lead the Catamounts in season-opener
Florence, S.C. ? Western Carolina carded a three-under, 285, as a team on Tuesday to hold on to the runner-up position with a 54-hole score of 849, but could not fend off hard-charging fellow Southern Conference foe, Georgia Southern, at the Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate at the par 72, 7,062-yard Country Club of South Carolina.
The Eagles posted a final round of 282 to rally from third-to-first over the final 18 holes to edge the Catamounts by two strokes, 847-to-849. Day one leader, South Carolina-Aiken slipped to third with a three-round score of 852, with Furman (861) finishing fourth ahead of a four-way tie for fifth between Charleston Southern, Elon, Georgia College & State University and James Madison.
WCU’s 849 represented the third-best, three-round score in school history and was the program’s lowest 54-hole team score since 2007.
Elon’s Jayson Judy and Casey Johnson of Appalachian State each carded a nine-under, 207, to share the individual medalist honors. Judy bookended two rounds of 70 around a second-round 67 on Monday, while Johnson shot 69, 67 and 71 to finish atop the leader board.
Senior Tanner Briele, who led the field 83-golfer field after the opening round after shooting his WCU career-low round of 66 on the first 18 holes, paced the Catamounts with a third-place finish, tied with GSU’s Spencer Fulford who carded a tournament and course-record 63 in the second round Monday. Briele’s 208 over the three-round, two-day event stands tied for the fourth-lowest individual three-round tournament score in school history.
Sophomore Kyle Wilson wound up tied for sixth after entering the final round tied for fourth in the standings. The Mount Airy, N.C., native shot his career-low round of 68 on the opening 18 before finishing with rounds of 70 and 73 to finish five-under, 211.
A trio of seniors rounded out Western Carolina’s finishers at the season opener. Ricky Stout closed the tournament with his best round, shooting 69 to finish at 215, tied for 17th, while classmate Drew Miller was tied for 30th, two strokes in arrears at 217 which featured his career-best round of 67 on Monday’s second round. Rylan Lanham finished tied for 63rd after carding rounds of 75, 73 and 76.
Playing as an individual, senior Benjy Davey finished tied for 51st, at 222, which also included his career-low 18 of 71 in Monday’s opening round.
Western Carolina returns to action on Sept. 25-28 at the Mason Rudolph Invitational, hosted by Vanderbilt University at the Legends Club in Nashville, Tenn. WCU finished 13th at the event a year ago, shooing 880 behind the 23rd-place finish by Stout.
Elon’s Judy Ties for Individual Title at Opening Tournament
FLORENCE, S.C. -- Elon's Jayson Judy carded a final round score of 70 and a three-round total of 207 to finish tied for medalists honors with Appalachian State's Casey Johnson in the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate on Tuesday. Led by Judy's strong performance, the Phoenix finished the tournament in a fifth-place tie among the 16 participating institutions while Georgia Southern won the team title for the second straight year.
Judy entered Tuesday's third round at the Country Club of South Carolina one stroke shy of Johnson, but bested him by one shot over the final 18 holes to earn the tie. There was no tie-breaker.
Over his 54 holes, Judy recorded 39 of Elon's tournament-leading 187 pars and 12 of the squad's 38 birdies. He shot a -1 on par three holes and was a tournament-best eight-under on the par fours.
Stephen Dressel fired a third round score of 72, his second round of par in the tournament, to finish in a tie for 30th at 217. Phil Bartholomew and Scott Hockemeyer tied for 56th with a final score of 223. Bartholomew carded a third round of 75 while Hockemeyer posted a 72 over his final 18 holes. Rounding out the Phoenix field was Tanner Norton who shot a 75 on the final day, finishing with a 225 and in a tie for 66th out of the 83 participants.
Defending champ Georgia Southern secured the 2009 title by posting a round of 282, the best of the day, and a three-round score of 847. Two strokes back, Western Carolina finished with an 849 after a 285 on Tuesday.
South Carolina-Aiken, who led after the first two rounds, posted a 292 over its final 18 holes to drop to third with a final total of 852. Furman's score of 861 placed them fourth.
In a four-way tie for fifth, Elon's total of 865 was matched by James Madison (294 in the final round), Georgia College and State (291 on Tuesday) and Charleston Southern (295 over its final 18). Elon climbed up the standings from ninth following day one.
The Phoenix bested league rivals Appalachian State (9th; 867), College of Charleston (10th; 869), Davidson (13th; 880) and Samford (16th; 885).
Elon will next play at the Sea Trails Intercollegiate which it hosts Sept. 25-27 in Sunset Beach, N.C.
Johnson Wins Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate Title
FLORENCE, S.C. - Appalachian State University men’s golfer Casey Johnson carded a 69-67-71-207 (-9) to tie for first place at the Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate on Tuesday. After being last of 16 teams following one round of play, the Mountaineers leap-frogged seven squads over the final two rounds to place ninth at the Country Club of South Carolina.
Johnson held a three-stroke lead over Elon’s Jayson Judy after nine holes on Tuesday, but Judy knocked in two birdies without a single bogey on the back nine to shoot a 70 for the day and tie the Mountaineer. There was no tiebreaker for the tournament.
The win is the second in 2009 for Johnson, as the senior from Charlotte won the North/South Intercollegiate in March.
Georgia Southern took home the team title with a 285-280-282-847 (-17), two strokes ahead of Southern Conference rival Western Carolina.
ASU moved up after each round of play to finish ninth at 298-283-286-867 (+3), just two strokes behind four teams tied for fifth place.
Dustin Hudson improved each round at 77-73-70-220 (+4) for a tie for 42nd place. Lance Wheeler (75-73-73) and Jacob Eggers (79-70-72) tied for 44th, just a stroke back.
Darren Cook carded a 77-78-82-237 (+21) for 83rd at the season opener.
ASU returns to the course next weekend for the Sea Trail Intercollegiate at Sunset Beach, N.C.
Furman Claims Fourth Place Finish At Springhill Suites Intercollegiate
Florence, S.C. -- The Furman men’s golf team posted a final round 292 to finish fourth at the season-opening Springhill Suites Intercollegiate at the par-72 Country Club of South Carolina on Tuesday.
Easley, S.C., native Daniel Bowden (70-69-74=213) led the way for the Paladins with a ninth place finish while junior Austin Reeves finished 14th on the strength of a final round two-under 70. Senior Garland Ferrell (73-68-74=215) grabbed a share of 17th one-under par 215.
Elon’s Jayson Judy and Appalachian State’s Casey Johnson tied for individual medalist honors at nine-under 207. CofC Men’s Golf Finishes 10th at Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate
Florence, S.C. ? Harrison Moore fired a 68 in the third round to move up to a tie for 17th and lead the College of Charleston men’s golf team to 10th at the Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate held Sept. 14-15 at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C. Georgia Southern won the tournament with a three-round total of 847. Charleston finished with an 869 after shooting a 291 today.
Elon’s Jayson Judy and Appalachian State’s Casey Johnson were named co-medalists after both finished the tournament with a 207.
Moore earned his tie for 17th for the Cougars with a 54-hole total of 215. John Duke Hudson tied for 23rd with a 216, while Elliott Lopez tied for 38th with a 218. Cabe Prieskorn tied for 56th with his 223 and rounding out the Cougar effort was Seth Stuart who shot a 224 to tie for 63rd.
Charleston is next in action Sept .25-26 when the team travels to Franklin, Tenn., for the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate.

SAMFORD MEN'S GOLF: FRESHMEN LEAD 'DOGS TO 16TH-PLACE FINISH AT SPRINGHILL SUITES TOURNEY

FLORENCE, S.C. --- In its first competition of the 2009-10 season, the Samford University men's golf team placed 16th at the 25th-annual Springhill Suites Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion University. The Bulldogs finished the two-day tournament with a 36-hole score of 885 (296-291-298).
"I'm proud of our guys and I think that they really played well," said Samford head coach Woodie Eubanks. "We had three true freshmen in the lineup and they were some of our best scorers this week. They have a lot of talent and I'm amazed that they were able to play this well in their first ever college tournament."
Samford was led at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate by true freshmen Casey O'Toole and Gabe Hyde. O'Toole fired an even-par 72 on Tuesday while Hyde carded a team-best 71. O'Toole finished the two-day competition as the 30th-ranked player in the field. Hyde, the Bulldogs' native of Hoover, Ala., placed 38th.
As a team, Samford placed 16th in the season-opening tournament, but was only nine strokes shy of the 12th-place position.
Georgia Southern earned the team title for a second-straight year and finished with a three-round total of 847 (285-280-282). Fellow Southern Conference-rival Western Carolina placed second with an 849 (282-282-285), while South Carolina-Aiken rounded out the top three with a final team score of 852 (282-278-292).
Elon's Jayson Judy and Appalachian State's Casey Johnson finished tied for individual medalist honors Tuesday. Both golfers carded identical 36-hole scores of 207 in the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate held at the Country Club of South Carolina.
"This course has hosted a lot of SoCon Championships and a majority of these teams have played here a number of times already," Eubanks said. "I think that's why the scores were so low this week, and I'm especially proud of our freshmen, because they shot so well and this was their first time here. They have a lot of talent and it bodes well for our future."
Samford senior Jeremy Cox tallied a three-round score of 228 (75-74-79), while freshman Bill Nabors carded a 231 (72-76-83). Junior Martin Bunt rounded out the Bulldogs' lineup with a 36-hole total of 234 (74-84-76).
The Samford University men's golf team will next be in action Sept. 25-27 at the 2009 Elon Intercollegiate, which will be held at the Sea Trail Golf Resort in Sunset Beach, N.C.
