Eagle Golf Releases 2009-2010 Schedule

Eagles host the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate and Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational for the 2009-2010 season.

STATESBORO, GA ? Head coach Larry Mays has announced the Georgia Southern golf schedule for the 2009-2010 academic year. The Eagles add three new tournaments for fall competition and one new tournament for the spring. Season competition concludes with the annual Southern Conference Championship located again in Florence, S.C. The winner of the event earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.

Showing a repeat appearance in fall competition are the Raines Development Intercollegiate and the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate, which Georgia Southern will host for the third consecutive year. The golf team will kick off competition with a trip to Riverside, Iowa, for a three-day tournament at Golfweek’s Conference Challenge August 30-September 1. The tournament will be played at the Blue Top Ridge Golf Club, which features a Rees Jones designed course.

The Eagles will then get their first look of the season at The Country Club of South Carolina in the Raines Development Intercollegiate September 14-15; Georgia Southern won the event in 2008 in record-setting style. The team will return to the par-72, 7,062-yard course in the spring for the conference championship. From September 21-22, Georgia Southern will compete in the Adams Cup of Newport Collegiate in Newport, R.I. Competition will be contested on the Newport National Golf Club, an Arthur Mills design.

The Gary Koch Intercollegiate returns after a brief hiatus as the Eagles take part in the event October 3-4 in Tampa, Fla. Auburn and University of Kentucky will host the event at the Old Memorial Golf Club. Concluding fall competition will be the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate October 19-20, which will be played at the Savannah Quarters Country Club in Savannah, Ga.

“We are starting out pretty early this year, before September even rolls around. Our first tournament, Golfweek’s Conference Challenge, will have 15 different conferences represented making it a good contest for us,” said Mays. “Our trip to Rhode Island will be a good opportunity for the team and we close out fall play hosting our tournament in Savannah, which is always a nice way to end the fall.”

Georgia Southern will open spring competition returning to the Gator Invitational at the University of Florida Golf Club February 13-14 for the 10th consecutive year. Following the spring opening tournament, the Eagles revisit the ever-challenging Sawgrass Country Club for the John Hayt Invitational February 28-March 2 in Ponte Vedra, Fla.

A new addition to the spring schedule, Georgia Southern will compete in the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by USC Aiken March 8-9. The two-day tournament will be played at the Palmetto Golf Club. The 31st Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational returns to Forest Heights Country Club March 19-21 in Statesboro, Ga. The Eagles will play host to the three-day tournament, which features top teams from around the nation, to close out the month of March.

The Augusta State Invitational will take place from April 3-4 at the Forest Hills Golf Club before Georgia Southern returns to The Country Club of South Carolina April 18-20 for the SoCon Championship.

“It’s a good, solid spring schedule and we will face a very strong, competitive mix of teams. We have some tough tournaments in the schedule that will be a good test for us and if we play well in those, we’ll be in good shape at the end of the year,” stated Mays.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s golf team has an 11-tournament schedule, pending approval from the Faculty Athletics Committee, for the upcoming season announced Tuesday by Head Coach Mark Guhne.  The Mocs will get a chance to defend their three titles from 2008-09 as well as return to sites of 2008 wins.

“It’s a quality schedule that will prepare us for the postseason,” said Guhne who is entering his fifth season.  “There are challenges to each event and very similar to the one we played in 2007-08 when we finished in the top 15 in the country.”

Chattanooga opens by returning to the site of its signature victory from last season, the Carpet Capital Classic at the Farm in Dalton Sept. 11-13.  The Mocs then travel west for the PING/Golfweek Invitational at Gold Mountain Golf Club Sept. 27-28 in Seattle.

October sends UTC for a return visit to the Brickyard Collegiate before returning home to co-host the Aldila Scenic City Invitational Oct. 26-27 at Council Fire Golf Club.  The Mocs close out the fall portion of the schedule at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina Nov. 2-3 at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley.

Chattanooga returns to three events from the 2009 season in the spring of 2010 and go back to the site of two 2008 victories.  It starts Feb. 13-14 with the SunTrust Gator Invitational at the University of Florida.

The Mocs play in three events in March returning to the Cleveland Golf/Palmetto Intercollegiate (Mar. 8-9) and Furman Intercollegiate (Mar. 19-21) where UTC claimed wins in 2008.  Those two events are in South Carolina as is the third, the Hootie at Bulls Bay (Mar. 28-29) in Awendaw.

A return trip to the Administaff Augusta State Invitational (Apr. 3-4) is a prelude to the Southern Conference Championship (Apr. 18-20).  The Mocs have won three straight SoCon Championships.

Chattanooga will be working its way back to NCAA Regionals (May 20-22) with regional sites in Alpharetta, Ga., Notre Dame, Ind., San Diego, Calif., College Station, Texas, Bremerton, Wash., and New Haven, Conn.  The NCAA Finals are June 2-5 at a familiar venue, the Honors Course in suburban Chattanooga.

“Our goal every year is to get to the NCAA Finals,” added Guhne.  “You try to schedule to get better each time out and to be playing your best golf in May and June.

“Obviously, part of that plan is to win as many tournaments as possible, especially the SoCon title,” said Guhne.  “Championship play builds confidence and we are at a point in this program that we expect to win every time out whether it’s Sept. or June.”
