A Pair Of Paladins Set For U.S. Men?s Amateur

Greenville, S.C. -- Furman University sophomore golfers Anthony Aloi and Matt Broome will both take part in the 2009 United States Amateur, set to take place August 24-30, at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

 

Aloi notched a two-day total of 147 at The Ridge at Back Brook in Ringoes, N.J., to finish second in his sectional qualifier.  He fashioned a 74.20 stroke average as a freshman for the Paladins, including a second place finish at the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate, on his way to earning Southern Conference All-Freshman honors. The Plainsboro, N.J., native tallied rounds of 70-74-73 to finish 13th in his first SoCon Championship.

 

Broome, a native of Barrington, R.I., fired a 137 over two rounds at the Maplegate Country Club in Bellingham, Mass., to claim medalist honors at the sectional.  He notched a season-best 19th place finish at the SoCon Championship with rounds of 71-69-80. The SoCon All-Freshman selection posted a 75.2 stroke average for the season.

 

The U.S. Amateur will feature 312 players and begins with 36 holes of stroke play.  The top 64 golfers advance to match play with the two finalists squaring off in a 36-hole final.  Match play will be televised on the Golf Channel through Friday and on NBC Saturday and Sunday.

 

Southern Hills Country Club has hosted 14 major championships including three U.S. Opens and four PGA Championships.
