CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Lance Wheeler shot a 70 (-2) and Appalachian State University men’s golf finished the Cavalier Classic opening round at 296 (+8) to tie for fifth place. The second round was not completed due to a lighting delay that lasted 1:45. Play was halted at approximately 3:30 p.m. and would not have been able to be resumed until 5:15 p.m. Tournament officials concluded the teams remaining on the course would not be able to complete play before darkness and the second round was not finished. Final results were based on Saturday’s first round of play.

 

Taylor Hines was also under par at 71 (-1) for a tie for ninth place, while Casey Johnson shot a 74 (+2) for a tie for 28th place.

 

Dustin Hudson carded an 81 (+9) in 84th place and Jacob Eggers finished at 84 (+12) for a tie in 95th place.

 

UNC Wilmington’s Josh Brock leads the field at 5-under 67. He had six birdies during his round and did not record a bogey until the 18th hole.

 

South Carolina was led by George Bryan IV’s 2-under 70. Three of his teammates shot even par 72 to help the Gamecocks to the first-round lead at 286 (-2).

 

Augusta State, ranked 36th nationally, also tied for fifth with the Mountaineers as both teams placed just one stroke back from fourth place and four strokes back of host and second-place Virginia.

 

ASU defeated NCAA hopefuls Maryland and East Carolina in the season finale.
