Country Club of South Carolina to host event for third consecutive year
FLORENCE, S.C. - The 73nd Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship begins Sunday, April 19 at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C., and runs through Tuesday, April 21.
Chattanooga will be looking to win its third straight league title this week after claiming an eight-stroke victory over College of Charleston in the 2008 event at the par 72, 7,062-yard course. The Mocs, which enter the tournament ranked 31st nationally by Golfstat, have won two tournaments this season and return four of five golfers who competed on last year’s championship team, including two-time league Player of the Year Jonathan Hodge.
Chattanooga’s stiffest competition this year may come from Georgia Southern, which has won three team tournaments in 2008-09 and is ranked 54th by Golfstat. The Eagles’ Logan Blondell, last season’s SoCon Freshman of the Year. claimed medalist honors at events in Savannah, Ga. and Kauai, Hawaii this season.
Also participating in the 10-team event are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Davidson, Elon, Furman, UNC Greensboro, Western Carolina, the tournament’s host, and Wofford.
The Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship has been played every season since 1933, aside from a four-year hiatus during World War II, and the event boasts past champions such as Arnold Palmer (1948-49) and Brad Faxon (1983).
The winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Regional.
