Sophomore Led GSU to third place in John Hayt Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Georgia Southern sophomore Joe Monte has been named the Southern Conference men’s golfer of the week for all spring competition through February 24.

A sophomore from Chantilly, Va., Monte followed a 218 (+8) at the season-opening Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., with a strong showing at this week’s John Hayt Invitational. Monte shot a season-low, two-under par 70 in the final found to finish the prestigious event in sixth place and lead the Eagles to a third-place team finish, behind only LSU and Arizona State. Monte was one of just five players to shoot a 70 in the tournament which was held at the Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

The golfer of the week is selected by a vote of the league’s men’s golf sports information directors.

Other top performers during the week were Davidson’s Michael Saari and Wofford’s Garrett Medeiros.
