Eagles Finish Second Round of John Hayt Invitational in Sole Possession of Third Place
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. ? After finishing tied for third after the first round of play, the Georgia Southern golf team shot a second-lowest team total 302 (+14) in the second round for a two-day tally of 24-over 600 to claim sole possession of third place of the 2009 John Hayt Invitational at the Sawgrass Country Club. On the par-72 course, Drew Lethem shot a 4-under 32 back nine to card an even-par 72 second round score. Combined with his first round 75, Lethem stands in seventh place with a 3-over 147 two day total.
“It was a hard day today, the team really hung in there. Drew [Lethem] had a great round and a stellar back nine 32. Joe [Monte] played great as well and we all worked hard out there today,” said head coach Larry Mays.
LSU moved into first place over Arizona State with a 7-over par 295 second round. After finishing opening day in first, Arizona State dropped a 15-over par 303 in the second round to slip into second place. UAB, who was tied with Georgia Southern after the first round, is four shots behind the Eagles after an 18-over par 306 second round. Georgia State rounds out the top five with a 607 (+31).
Four bogeys left Lethem 4-over par after the first nine, but the senior Eagle turned around his game excelling on the back nine. Lethem stood at 2-over par after the 15th hole thanks to an opening pair of birdies on holes 10 and 11. The Eagle then birdied on 16 and carded his fourth birdie on the back nine at 18 for a 4-under par 32 back nine tally. Lethem’s 18-hole showcase put him in seventh place with an even-par 72.
Joe Monte jumped into a ninth place four-way tie after a 32nd place start to the second round. Monte’s 1-over par 73 was complimented by a front nine 1-under par 35. Going into the seventh hole, Monte was 3-over par before he finished the final three holes on a birdie, eagle and birdie, respectively, for a front nine 1-under par 35. Monte’s eagle on 8 left him in good position for his back half. The sophomore bogeyed twice on the back nine to finish the day tied for ninth. Monte’s 76-73 first two rounds put him with a 5-over 149 total.
Sophomore Logan Blondell had a tough day dropping from fourth to a tie for 16th after a second round score of 7-over 79. Blondell shot a 3-over 39 succeeded by a 4-over 40 18-hole second round. His two day total of 151 (+7) is third best on the team. Ryan LeFevre is two shots behind Blondell after a second round 78, combining with a 75 opening round for a 153 total. LeFevre posted even 3-over 39 front and back nine marks to card his 6-over 78.
Spencer Fulford rounds out the Eagles’ five with a 76-79?155 two day total placing him in a tie for 41st. Fulford’s second round was highlighted by a birdie on 10.
The final round of play will begin on Tuesday for Georgia Southern at 9:30 a.m. alongside Arizona State and LSU teeing off together on the front nine.
Judy, Elon Open Solid at Wexford Plantation
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. ? Jayson Judy fired a two-round 150 to pace Elon to a fifth-place showing after the opening day of the three-round, two-day Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate men's golf tournament Monday afternoon on the 6,828-yard Wexford Plantation course.
Judy followed up his one-over-par, first-round 73 in the morning with a second-round 77 to settle into a tie for 10th place in 81-golfer field. The Phoenix (305-311?616) trails South Carolina ? Aiken (591), Francis Marion (593), Richmond (604) and USC Upstate (608) following the first 36 holes of the 54-hole, 16-team event.
Presbyterian (618) and Wofford (618) will enter third-round action on Tuesday morning tied for sixth place, two shots behind Elon. Ohio (621), Cleveland State (621), Davidson (632), George Mason (632), George Washington (639), Marshall (639), Bowling Green State (643), Rhode Island (656) and St. Joseph’s (663) make up the rest of the field.
The Phoenix also received scorecards from Phil Bartholomew (Tied-13th/77-74?151), Michael Fekete (Tied-38th/77-80?157), Steve Dressel (Tied-46th/78-82?160) and Randall Anderson (Tied-46th/80-80?160).
Bowman leads UNCG on first day at Rio Pinar
GREENSBORO, N.C. ? Will Bowman recorded rounds of 72 and 74 as UNC Greensboro carded a 36-hole score of 599 on the first day of the Rio Pinar Invitational men’s golf tournament.
Bowman is tied for 24th place after the opening round at two-over par.
Central Florida’s Blayne Barber is leading the field after a second round score of 64. He leads by four shots over Bobby Massa of Texas-Arlington.
Central Florida, the tournament host, shot an opening day total of 571, including a blistering 277 in the afternoon round. Louisville is second at 575, following by Vanderbilt and UT-Arlington at 577.
Tuesday’s final round gets underway at 8:30 am.

Mocs Golfers in 12th Place Heading into Final Round
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla.---The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s golf team struggled to a second round total of 317 (+29) at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Monday afternoon. The Mocs are in 12th-place with a 36-hole total of 620 heading into tomorrow’s final round.
LSU leads the event shooting 295 in its second round to move ahead Arizona State, the first round leader. The Tigers two-day total of 591 (+27) leads the Sun Devils (593) by two shots and third-place Georgia Southern (600) by nine.
True freshman Stephan Jaeger shot the Mocs low round of the day with a 76 (+4) to move into a tie for 33rd at 10-over par, 154. Junior Derek Rende is tied for 16th at seven-over par, 151 after a second round score of 77 (+5).
Jonathan Hodge is next up for the Mocs at 157 (+13) after today’s round of 80. Fredrik Qvicker and Ben Rickett shot 84 today to push their total to 160 (+16) and are both tied for 67th. J.T. Clendenin, playing as an individual, is tied for 41st at 155 (+11).
Zack Byrd (Coastal Carolina) and James Byrne (Arizona State) are tied for the lead at three-under par 141. LSU’s Andrew Loupe is in third place two shots off the pace at 143 (-1).
Ben Rickett will lead the Mocs off of the No. 10 tees at 9:21 a.m.. Chattanooga is paired with TCU and host North Florida. Clendenin will tee of at 8:27 a.m.
Ferrell Paces Paladins At John Hayt Collegiate Invitational
Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. -- Junior Garland Ferrell fired a second round 75 to help Furman to a 312 on Monday morning at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the par-72 Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
Ferrell (77-75=152) opened with three birdies on the back nine to move from 42nd place up to 22nd after 36 holes. The Paladins’ low scorer in the first round, Daniel Bowden (76-77=153), carded a second round 77 to hold a share of 29th position.
LSU (296-295=591) posted a 295 on Monday to overtake second place Arizona State (290-303=593) for the lead while Georgia Southern, UAB and Georgia State round out the top five in a field that includes seven of the top 30 teams in the nation. Furman (310-312=622) remained in 14th place, but the Paladins enter the final round just three strokes out of 11th.
Arizona State’s James Byrne (68-73=141), the first round leader, and Coastal Carolina’s Zach Byrd (71-70=141) lead third place Andrew Loupe of LSU by three strokes after two rounds.
Final round action begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Furman will play from the back nine beginning at 8:36 a.m.
