Johnson Finishes Second at Mission Inn Intercollegiate; ASU Third
ORLANDO, Fla. - Three Mountaineers posted top-15 finishes as Appalachian State University men’s golf took home third place at the Mission Inn Intercollegiate over the weekend with rounds of 293-295-296-884 (+32). Casey Johnson tied for second place at the event with scores of 71-69-72-212 (-1).
Dustin Hudson carded a 71-73-78-222 (+9) and Lance Wheeler matched the score with rounds of 72, 78 and 72 as the two tied for 15th place on the weekend.
Jacob Eggers shot a 79-75-75-229 (+16) for 32nd place and Josh Nichols finished 50th at 83-79-77-239 (+26).
Florida Gulf Coast ran away with the team title at 864 (+12) as the team’s Daniel Mazziotta took home the individual title, three strokes ahead of Johnson with a 68-70-71 (-4). Stetson took home second place, a pair of strokes in front of Appalachian.
The Mountaineers return to the course a week from Monday at the Davidson College Invitational at DC’s River Run Country Club.
Eagles Record ?Top 10’ Finish Taking Ninth in Gary Koch Intercollegiate
Newcomer Florian Sander finishes in 10th individually.
TAMPA, Fla. ? Redshirt-freshman Florian Sander earned his second ?Top 10’ collegiate finish in his first year competing as an Eagle, carding a 211 (-5) tournament total at the Gary Koch Intercollegiate Sunday (October 4). Sander helped lead the Georgia Southern golf team to a ninth-place finish shooting a team total 862 on the par-72, 7,389 Old Memorial Golf Club.
Florida State took the tournament title setting a new tournament 54-hole record by firing an 834 (-30). The Seminoles broke the previous marker of 840 held by Florida in 2005. Texas Tech took second place with an 850, two strokes ahead of Virginia and Florida, who finished tied for third at 852. North Florida completed the ?Top 5’ recording a tournament-total 854.
Kyle Kopsick of Auburn set a 54-hole individual tournament record taking medalist honors with a 201 (-15). Kopsick bested the previous record set in 2003 by four strokes.
“Today was a tough day for the team. We beat some very talented teams in the tournament, but we are disappointed in our performance today,” said head coach Larry Mays. “With harder pin placements today, the course played a little tougher and the boys had to manage some windy conditions.”
Sander led the way for the Eagles, earning the team’s lowest round on the final 18. The Bregenz, Austria, native fired a 2-under 70 to complete a 5-under 211 tournament total, tying the Eagle for 10th place and setting a new tournament best for the Eagle. Sander posted scores in the red every round of the tournament, opening with a 2-under 70 and carding a second round 1-under 71 to be followed with a final round 70.
Highlighting his final round with an eagle on nine, junior Joe Monte wrapped up the tournament in a 32nd place tie with a 217 (+1). Monte (Chantilly, Va.) posted a 78 on the final 18. Finishing one stroke behind Monte, teammate Ryan Zabroske (Alpharetta, Ga.) capped off the tournament with a final round 2-over 74. Zabroske’s 218 placed him in a tie for 39th place.
Reflecting his opening round, junior Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.) shared 51st place with a final round 76. Senior Spence Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.) finished the tournament in a tie for 67th at 226 after a final round 78.
Competing as an individual, senior Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.) completed the tournament at 5-over 221, putting him in a tie for 51st alongside teammate Blondell.
“Florian had a great tournament for us. We are proud of his performance,” stated Mays. “But our third and fourth scores were not what we needed today.”
The Georgia Southern golf team will close out fall play hosting the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate, October 19-20. The tournament will take place on the par-72, 7,016 yard Savannah Quarters Country Club.
UNCG’s Hoadley cards even-par round, Spartans 16th entering final round at Squire Creek
CHOUDRANT, La. ? UNC Greensboro freshman Robert Hoadley recorded a round of even-par 72 in the afternoon on Monday to finish at four-over 148 after two rounds at the Louisiana Tech / Squire Creek Intercollegiate.
The Spartans are in 16th place after identical rounds of 306 on Monday. New Orleans leads the team standings at 567, six shots ahead of Middle Tennessee State and Southeastern Louisiana.
Hoadley is tied for 36th place in the individual standings. He carded a 76 in the morning round and is just six shots out of the Top 10 as there is a logjam at the top of the individual standings. Southeastern Louisiana’s Cedric Scotto holds the individual lead at six-under par 138, one shot better than Ken Looper of New Orleans.
Tuesday’s final round gets underway at 8:30 am local time.

College of Charleston Men's Golf 10th as Second Round Suspended Due to Darkness
Daufuskie Island, S.C. - Coy Breen (San Antonio, Texas) shot a 73 in the first round and a 77 in the second to sit tied for 11th and lead the College of Charleston men's golf team to 10th after the second round of the Rees Jones Invitational being held Oct. 3-4 at Haig Point in Daufuskie Island, S.C. Five teams were still on the course when play was suspended due to darkness.
South Carolina leads the tournament with a 580, while the Cougars are through two rounds with a 624, just one stroke from ninth.
South Carolina's Paul Woodbury leads individually with a 36-hole total of 142.
With scores in for all but five teams, Breen leads the Cougars with a 150. Michael Montgomery (Hilton Head, S.C.) is tied for 26th with a 154 and tied for 33rd is John Hudson (Sonora, Texas) with a 157. Seth Stuart (Austin, Texas) is tied for 53rd wit ha 164 and in 58th is Harrison Moore (Orangeburg, S.C.) with a 168.
The second round will conclude at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday before the third and final round commences.
