Spartans second, Almand and Chapman in contention at Georgetown Intercollegiate
BEALSVILLE, Md. ? Will Almand and Colin Chapman are both in contention and UNC Greensboro is tied for second after Monday’s opening round of the weather-shortened Georgetown Intercollegiate at The Members Club at Four Streams.
The Spartans carded a round of 296 in Monday’s round, tied for second alongside Richmond. Washington State is in the lead at 285. Only one round was played on Monday after heavy rain in the area throughout the weekend was followed by a frost delay this morning, forcing tournament officials to shorten the tournament to 36 holes.
Almand, a sophomore from Cary, N.C. and product of Green Hope HS, carded an even-par 71 on Monday. Colin Chapman, a sophomore and Franklin, N.C. product, shot a 72 on Monday. Washington State’s Hank Frame is the individual leader after an opening round 68, one shot better than his teammate Trent Sanders.
Tuesday’s final round is tentatively slated for a 9:30 a.m. start due to more cold temperatures forecast in the overnight.

Bowden Leads Furman With 67 In Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate Second Round
Savannah, Ga. -- Furman’s Daniel Bowden fired the low round of the day with a second round 67 to grab third place and help Furman into a tie for sixth after two rounds at the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate on Monday.
Bowden (72-67=139), a senior from Easley, S.C., joined Georgia Southern’s Ryan Zabroske in shooting a five-under par 67 at the par-72, 7,016-yard Savannah Quarters Country Club. With a two-round total of five-under 139, Bowden trails tournament leader David Watkins (68-68=136) of East Carolina by three strokes and second place Joe Young of Georgia College & State University by one stroke after 36 holes.
Sophomore Anthony Aloi and senior Garland Ferrell carded rounds of 70 and 71, respectively, to help Furman into a sixth place tie with Jacksonville and Kennesaw State entering the final round. The Paladins trail tournament leader East Carolina (284-280=564) by 21 strokes. Wofford, Old Dominion, Georgia College & State and Georgia Southern rounded out the top five in the 15-team field.
Jack Ulrich (73-76=149), playing as an individual, posted a career-best 73 in opening round play on Monday morning. He is tied for 36th after two rounds.
Final round play in the 54-hole tournament is set for Tuesday morning. Furman will tee-off from No. 1 beginning at 8:45 a.m.

Zabroske Fires Tournament Low Round; East Carolina Leads After Opening Day of Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate
Ryan Zabroske sets career-low 18 with second-round 67.
POOLER, GA ? Senior Ryan Zabroske tied the tournament-low round on the opening day of the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate with a second-round 67. Zabroske’s 67 set a personal-best single round for the Eagle. After the opening round, the Georgia Southern golf team shaved 10 strokes for a second round 287 led by Zabroske and Florian Sander. After two rounds, Georgia Southern stands in fifth-place at 584 (297-287). The tournament is being played at Savannah Quarters Country Club, a par 72, 7,016 yard course.
East Carolina holds a strong first-place advantage firing two sub-par rounds for a 12-under 564 (284-280). Holding second-place, Wofford bounced back from an opening round 293 to tally a second round 280 for a 573 (-3). Old Dominion stands even after two rounds (576) for third place and Georgia College & State University stands in fourth at 582 (+6) heading into the final round Tuesday. Georgia Southern completes the top-five at 584 (+8).
ECU also boasts David Watkins as the top individual. Watkins owns identical rounds of 68 for an 8-under 136 opening day showing. Two strokes behind Watkins, Joe Young of Georgia College followed a first round 4-under 68 with a second round 70 (136). Furman’s Daniel Bowden stands in third place at 5-under, while Sam Wall of Old Dominion owns fourth at 4-under. Three individuals stand in a fifth-place tie at 3-under 141.
Shining with the day’s lowest round, Zabroske shaved off eight strokes from an opening round 75 for a second-round 67. The senior from Alpharetta, Ga., is tied for eighth heading into the final round after setting a career-low round of 18. Three strokes behind Zabroske, redshirt-freshman Sander (Bregenz, Austria) carded a 145 on the day compliments of rounds of 73 and 72, respectively. Sander finished tied for 21st after the opening day.
With two rounds of 74, junior Joe Monte (Chantilly, Va.) ties for 32nd at 138, while senior Spence Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.), one stroke back of Monte, owns a share of 36th at 149. Matt Deal rounds out the starting five for the Eagles. The senior from Statesboro, Ga., posted a 154 on the day with rounds of 75 and 79, respectively to finish T-64.
Competing as an individual, junior Coleman Calhoun (Vidalia, Ga.) opened with a 79 and leads the tournament in birdies, firing 11 on the day. The junior’s second round 71 puts him in a tie for 44th after two rounds.
“We are disappointed in our performance today. After getting off to a shaky start, we bounced back in the second round thanks to Ryan [Zabroske] and Florian [Sander], who both put up solid rounds,” said head coach Larry Mays. “We know that we will need rounds similar to Ryan’s and Florian’s to put us back in contention for a good finish. We are looking forward to finishing the tournament with a solid team performance tomorrow.”
The final round of competition begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning. Florida Gulf Coast, Kennesaw State and Jacksonville University tee off first on the front nine. Deal will tee off first for the Eagles, who start on hole one, at 8:45 a.m.

Elon’s Judy, Bartholomew in Top-25 After Two Rounds
SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Jayson Judy and Phil Bartholomew each sit among the top-25 players at the 2009 Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate golf tournament, but the Elon Phoenix finished day one in a 10th-place tie with Troy with a two round score of 587 (301-286). East Carolina leads the 15-team field with a 564 (284-280). The third and final round will be played at the Savannah Quarters Country Club on Tuesday.
Judy posted 29 pars over his 36 holes en route to a two-round score of 143 (72-71) to sit in a tie for 11th-place after two rounds. Bartholomew tallied rounds of 74 and 71 for a total of 145 and currently sit in a tie for 21st.
Alex Luxenburg followed up his first round of 77 with a second round score of 72 for a 149 on the day and is tied for 36th. Scott Hockemeyer (T44th; 78-72--150) and Stephen Dressel (T64th; 78-76--154) rounded out Elon's field.
East Carolina's David Watkins carded two rounds of 68 (136) to lead the 81-golfer field.
Trailing ECU on the leaderboard is Wofford which shot a 573 (293-280) on day one. Old Dominion (291-285--576), Georgia College & State (293-289--582) and Georgia Southern (297-287--584) round out the top five. SoCon rival Furman is tied for sixth after rounds of 302 and 283 for a total of 585. The Phoenix leads SoCon foes Samford (13th; 300-300--600) and Davidson (15th; 307-303--610).
