Mocs Finish Tied for Second at Brickyard Collegiate

Rain washes out third round, 36-hole results stand

MACON, Ga.---Rain washed away Monday’s third round at the Brickyard Collegiate giving No. 24 Chattanooga a tie for second with Clemson at 576 (E).  Results revert to the 36-hole totals.

 

Augusta State claims the title finishing at 563 (-13)/  Following the Mocs and Tigers is Georgia in fourth place at 579 (+3).  VCU rounds out the top five at 584 (+8)

 

Senior Fredrik Qvicker shot 142 (-2) to lead Chattanooga tying for 10th.  Sophomore Stephan Jaeger and freshman Steven Fox tied for 12th at one-under par 143.  Senior Derek Rende tied for 44th at 148 (+4), while fellow senior J.T. Clendenin ended tied for 64th at 153 (+9). 

 

“”I am proud of the way we played,” said head coach Mark Guhne.  “We were very solid without playing at our best.  It’s like when a pitcher in baseball doesn’t have his best stuff, but finds a way to win. 

 

“We found a way to score without our “A-game” and that’s something I’ve been looking for since I started coaching.”

 

Chattanooga returns to action in two weeks hosting the Aldila Scenic City Invitational  Oct. 26-27 at Council Fire Golf Club in East Brainerd.  The Mocs headline a 16-team field that includes Maryland, Missouri, Iowa State, Middle Tennessee and Wichita State.

Terriers in Second After Opening Day at Davidson Invitational

 

DAVIDSON, N.C. ? The Terrier men’s golf team sits in second place at the Davidson College Invitational. Senior Garrett Medeiros currently leads the field after two rounds of play in cold and rainy conditions Monday.

 

Medeiros carded a two-under par 70 in each of the first two rounds to finish the first day at four-under par, six strokes ahead of the second place player.

 

Freshman Mark Joye was close behind, recording scores of 76 and 74 to claim eleventh place on Monday.

 

The Terriers combined for team scores of 295 and 298, placing them second in the field of 12 schools. With 593 strokes, Wofford is only two strokes behind first-place Liberty University.

 

The third and final round of the tournament will be played on Tuesday. The Terriers will tee off beginning at 9:15 a.m.

 

 

 

 

Liberty Leads Davidson College Invitational; Davidson Sits Eighth

 

DAVIDSON, N.C. - After two rounds of play in cold in rainy conditions at the River Run Country Club on Monday, Liberty leads the 12-team field at the 2009 Davidson College Invitational. The hosting Davidson golf team sits eighth led, by John Skeadas.

 

Liberty posted a two-round score of 591 (287+304) to earn a two-stroke lead over the leading Southern Conference team, Wofford (593, 295+298). Wofford's Garrett Medeiros holds a six-stroke lead individually after posting back-to-back 70's.

 

The Wildcats combined for a 302 in the first round and a 313 in the second for a two-round total of 615.

 

Jackson Taylor led Davidson after the first round with a one-over par 73, but shot an 80 in the second to fall to a tie for 26th overall. Skeadas leads the 'Cats in a tie for 12th place overall with a two-round score of 151 (76+75). Bobby Urso is also locked in the tie for 26th place with a 153 (76+77). Christopher Rollins (162) and Walker Allen (164) rounded out Davidson's scoring group.

 

Davidson will tee off at the 10th hole at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday for the third and final round.

 

The Invitational is taking place at the River Run Country Club, a 7,208-yard, par-72 championship course located in Davidson. The course was recognized by Golf Reporter as one of the finest tracks in the Southeast, and went through a complete renovation in 2007, including a rebuilding of all of the greens, and a laser-leveling of the tee boxes. It is one of the home courses for the Davidson golf program, giving the 'Cats one of the top facilities in the area.

Elon Battles Cool Temperatures, Rain at Davidson Invite

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Playing in rainy conditions with temperatures hovering in the mid-50s, the Elon men's golf team struggled through 36 holes on the first day of the Davidson College Invitational to sit in ninth place among the 12 participating programs.  The Phoenix posted a two-round score of 618 (309-309).  Liberty leads the field after firing a 591 (287-304) on Monday.  Jayson Judy's 147 (74-73) paces Elon.
 
Judy's total puts him in third place individually, one shot behind Liberty's Max McCay (71-75--146) for second and seven strokes behind Wofford's Garrett Medeiros (70-70--140) for the lead.  Judy's rounds were the first over par for the senior this season.
 
Scott Hockemeyer carded the top round for Elon over the first 18 holes, posting a round of 73.  Hockemeyer's second round totaled 80 strokes for a two-round total of 153 to place in a tie for 26th place.
 
Elon's field was rounded out by Phil Bartholomew (78-82--160), who is tied for 45th in the field of 63 golfers, Tanner Norton (T-53rd; 84-79--163) and Miller Robins (T-53rd; 86-77--163).
 
SoCon rival Wofford (295-298--593) sits just two strokes back of Liberty for the team lead.  The rest of the top five consists of Gardner-Webb (300-303--603), Francis Marion (299-304--603) and Radford (302-306--608).
 
Two other SoCon teams are participating in the tournament ? Appalachian State (T-6th; 310-302--612) and Davidson (8th; 302-313--615).
 
Elon's third round will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning from the River Run Country Club in Davidson, N.C.
