Rhode Island Native Leads Furman To Fifth Place Finish At Adams Cup Of Newport
Newport, R.I. -- Furman’s Matt Broome, a native of Barrington, R.I., fired a final round 69 to help the Paladins (297-298-298=893) to a fifth place finish in his home state at the Adams Cup of Newport at the par-72 Newport National Golf Club on Tuesday.
Broome (81-75-69=225) finished at three-under-par on the day and nine-over for the tournament to earn a top 25 finish with a tie for 24th. Fellow sophomore Austin Reeves (70-73-77=220) played the 54-hole tournament at four-over to grab a share of seventh place while Garland Ferrell
(73-74-75=222) finished in a 14th place tie.
Furman 37 strokes off the pace set by tournament winners Texas A&M (286-280-290=856). The Aggies finished 16 strokes ahead of second place Minnesota who led the tournament after Monday’s first round. Francis Marion finished third with Southern Miss and Furman rounding out the top five.
Bronson Burgoon (69-66-69=204) played all three rounds below 70 to earn individual medalist honors at 12-under-par. He finished seven strokes ahead of teammate and second place finisher Andrea Pavan (69-72-70=211).
The Furman men’s golf team will be back in action September 29-30, when they take part in Louisville’s Cardinal Classic in Simpsonville, Ky.

Paladins Fifth After Two Rounds At Adams Cup Of Newport
Newport, R.I. ? Sophomore Austin Reeves posted rounds of 70 and 73 to grab a share of seventh place and help the Furman Paladins (297-298=595) into fifth on the opening day of the Adams Cup of Newport at the par-72 Newport National Golf Club on Monday.
Reeves (70-73=143), a product of Eastside High School, jumped into a tie for fourth with his opening round two-under-par 70 before slipping to seventh with a second round 73. Teammate Garland Ferrell (73-74=147) earned a share of 16th at three-over through two rounds.
Texas A&M (286-280=566) used a eight-under-par second round to erase Minnesota’s two-stroke lead and open a five-stroke advantage entering the final 18 holes on Tuesday. The Aggies’ Bronson Burgoon (69-66=135) took a commanding lead following a first round 69 with a six-under 66 on Monday afternoon. He leads Southern Miss’ Rocky Cleland by four strokes and has a six-stroke lead on a pair of golfers tied for third.
Final round action slated to get underway Tuesday morning.

Eagles Tied for Ninth After Day One at Shoal Creek
Drew Lethem tied for 18th overall
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Following the first two rounds at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, the Georgia Southern golf team stands in a tie for ninth overall. The first two rounds on Monday (Sept. 22) took place at the Shoal Creek Country Club, hosted by UAB. The event will conclude Tuesday morning with the final 18 holes.
Georgia Southern shot 602 (+26) overall, tying with Auburn for ninth place. However, the Eagles are just seven strokes back of fourth place. The squad shot an opening round 305 then followed with a 297.
Senior Drew Lethem (Camdenton, MO/Olathe East/Odessa CC) carded a 75 and 74 to finish 5-over and tied for 18th overall.
Sophomore Logan Blondell (Lakeland, FL/Lakeland) shot a 1-over 73 in round two, finishing in a tie for 25th overall at 7-over. Freshman Sean Brannan (Duncansville, PA/Hollidaysburg Area) is tied for 37th, two strokes behind Blondell carding a 79 and 74.
Junior Spencer Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C./Southwest Edgecomb) is tied for 43rd shooting a 73 and 81 to end the day at 10-over. Senior Jordan Johnstun (Evans/LaGrange) finished the day tied for 52nd with a 157.
Baylor was the only team to shoot even par in the first round and was 5-over on the day to take an eight-stroke lead into the final round. LSU was at +13, followed by Mississippi three strokes behind. From there UAB and Tulsa were tied at 19-over; East Tennessee State, North Florida and Texas Tech finished at +20; followed by the Eagles and Auburn at +26.
"I think this was the best weather we had in 10 years, but today we made too many big mistakes, too many doubles (bogeys)," said head coach Larry Mays. "Drew (Lethem) played solid today, in fact he was the only one on the team that did not make a double-bogey... The guys are in good spirits, ready for tomorrow. If we can go out tomorrow, eliminate the doubles and play a solid round we can certainly make a run up the leader board and leave here with a good feeling."

Wofford shoots Even par as team on final day

SUNSET BEACH, N.C. -- The Wofford men's golf team fired an Even-par 288 during the final round Sunday to finish sixth out of 18 schools at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate at the par 72, 6,761-yard Sea Trail Resort course in Sunset Beach, N.C.
The Terriers ended the event with a 298-300-288--886 (+22), 18 shots behind team winner Murray State. The Racers finished 10 strokes ahead of second-place Guilford.
Junior Garrett Medeiros paced the Wofford contingent with a fourth-place tying 72-72-71--215 (-1). He was one of five players under par.
Senior Drew Perry was the next Terrier in the clubhouse with a 76-75-70--221 (+5) to tie for 23rd. Junior Mike McKenzie garnered a 32nd-place tie following a 74-76-73--223 (+7).
Rookie Brent Whitehead notched a 76-77-74--227 (+11) to tie for 51st, while fellow freshman Ben Wright finished with a 70th-place tying result after carding a 76-81-75--232 (+16).
Elon's Steve Dressel won the medalist crown after hitting a 4-under par 69-74-69--212.
Wofford will return to action Oct. 6-7 at the Stono Cup at The Links at Stono Ferry in Hollywood, S.C.
