Western puts two individuals in top eight at the Aldila Scenic City Intercollegiate
Chattanooga, Tenn. ? Western Carolina senior Andres Cuenca paced the men’s golf team with a second-place finish, establishing a school scoring record in the process as the Catamounts posted an eighth-place finish with a two-day total of 865 at the season-opening Aldila Scenic City Intercollegiate held at the par 72, 6,999-yard Council Fire Golf Club.
Cuenca carded all three rounds in the sixties ? 68-69-68 ? for a three-round total of 205 to set a school benchmark for 54-hole tournaments, besting former teammate Matt Cook’s year-old record of 206 set at the Mizuno Southbridge Intercollegiate on Oct. 15-16, 2007 (Cook shot 206 twice, also doing so at the CSU Fall Invitational in 2006). Cuenca, a native of Fuengirola, Spain, tied for second in par 3 scoring (2.80, -3) and was tied for eighth in par 5 tallies (4.53, -7).
As a team, Western’s 865 ranked as the sixth-best, three-round tournament score in the program’s history. The 168 combined pars for the Catamounts also led the tournament, six ahead of Furman in second. Also, WCU improved on its 15th-place showing from a year ago, trimming 14 strokes off its score from last season.
Southern Conference counterpart, Chattanooga, blistered its home course with a 54-hole total of 45-under, 819, to claim the team title by 14 strokes over second place, Augusta State (833). Wichita State (851) was third, 32-strokes off the pace followed by Southern Mississippi (854) and a two-way tie for fifth at 855 between North Florida and Middle Tennessee.
After setting a course-record with an opening round 60, Southeastern Louisiana’s Matthew Carvell cruised to the individual medalist honors by seven strokes over Cuenca, Wichita State’s Dustin Garza and Chattanooga’s Ben Rickett, tied for second at 205. Stephan Jaeger from UTC rounded out the top five, one stroke in arrears at 206.
Behind Cuenca’s record-setting two days, junior Ricky Stout, who led WCU after the opening round with a career-low round of 67, tied for eighth place overall to post a career-best finish. The New Bern, N.C., native tied for the eighth-best individual 54-hole score in school history with a 209 (67-71-71). Stout was tied for second in par 4 scoring through the tournament, averaging 3.88 or three-under.
Rounding out Western’s team performances were junior Benjy Davey (T-73rd, 228), freshman Kyle Wilson (T-79th, 230) and sophomore Caleb Marsh (T-82nd, 232). Also, playing as an individual, junior transfer Drew Miller placed tied for 69th with a two-day, three-round total of 227 (78-76-73).
Up next for the Catamounts is the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate, hosted by Francis Marion University at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence ? the same location as the SoCon Men’s Golf Championships. The two-day, three-round tournament is scheduled for a practice round on Sunday, Sept. 14, with the 54 holes spread over Sept. 15-16.
