Mocs Lead after 18 Holes at Furman Intercollegiate
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The No. 13 Chattanooga men’s golf team shot 287 (-1) to claim a three-stroke lead in the first round at the Furman Intercollegiate. The Mocs lead No. 16 South Carolina (290) by three shots and No. 23 Clemson (293) by six.
The Mocs were a cumulative -17 under-par on the par fives with four eagles, 10 birdies and one bogey. The tournament is being played at the Furman University Golf Club.
“I am very pleased with our play today,” said Head Coach Mark Guhne. “We played extremely well on the par fives. This is a very difficult course to go ?low’ on.”
Jonathan Hodge led the way with a three-under par 69. Hodge, ranked 38th in the country, had four birdies with one bogey. Going into the event, Hodge ranks eighth in the country in first-round scoring average (72.56).
J.T. Clendenin is tied for 11th after carding an even-par 72. Ben Rickett, this week’s Southern Conference Golfer of the Week, and Derek Rende both shot 73 (+1), while Fredrik Qvicker added a two-over par 74. Eric Forsman, playing as an individual, shot 75 (+3).
The tournament continues tomorrow with 18 holes before concluding on Sunday with a final 18.
Hodge Powers Chattanooga Into First Round Lead, Furman Eighth At Furman Intercollegiate
Greenville, S.C. -- Chattanooga’s Jonathan Hodge paced the field with an opening round 69 to give the Mocs a three-stroke lead at 39th annual Furman Intercollegiate on Friday at the par 72, 6,800-yard Furman University Golf Course.
Hodge posted four birdies and just one bogey to claim a one-stroke advantage over second place Peter McGibney (35-35=70) of Francis Marion and two stroke lead over a group of eight golfers tied at one-under-par that includes Furman’s Danny Schmieding.
Chattanooga enters Saturday’s second round with a three-stroke lead over South Carolina and four shots ahead of third place Clemson. Vanderbilt and Ohio State round out the top five. Furman concluded Friday’s play in an eighth place tie with Francis Marion just 10 strokes off of the lead.
Schmieding, playing as an individual, equaled a first round high with six birdies. Junior Jonathan Bowden led Furman’s team to a 297 by opening tournament play with a 73. Ben Goforth posted a 74 and Matt Hayes and Austin Reeves each shot 75 for the Paladins.
Second round action is slated to get underway at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning with final round play slated for 8 a.m. on Sunday.

Western Carolina Men’s Golf Sixth After Opening Round of Furman Intercollegiate
Greenville, S.C. ? Western Carolina carded a seven-over, 295, as a team on Friday to stand in sixth-place at the Furman Intercollegiate being played on the par 72, 6,800-yard Furman University Golf Course. Senior Matt Cook and sophomore Ricky Stout led the Catamounts, each carding opening rounds of one-over, 73, to be in the clubhouse tied for 17th.
Second round action is slated to get underway at 8:00 am on Saturday morning with final round play slated for 8:00 am on Sunday.
Led by first-round leader, Jonathan Hodge, with a three-under 69, nationally-ranked Chattanooga sits atop the leader board with a one-under, 287, as a team to hold a three-stroke advantage over second place South Carolina (290). Palmetto State rival, Clemson, sits third with an opening day 292, followed by Vanderbilt (293) in fourth and Ohio State rounding out the top five, one stroke ahead of WCU in fifth at 294.
Francis Marion’s Peter McGibney is one stroke in arrears of first-round leader, Hodge, while also holding a one-stroke advantage on an eight-way tie for third.
Western Carolina was the second-best Southern Conference school behind UTC. Other conference foes competing on the weekend are Furman (T-8th), Davidson (13th), Elon (T-16th), Appalachian State (T-20th) and Wofford (T-22nd).
For Western, junior Andres Cuenca shot an opening round two-over, 74, to stand tied for 42nd while classmate Dustin Furnari fired 75 to enter the second round tied for 42nd. Rounding out WCU’s scorers for the day was freshman Caleb Marsh with an eight-over, 80 (T-102nd).
The Catamounts will begin teeing off at 1:00 pm tomorrow afternoon beginning with Marsh, with Cook slated to take to the course at 1:40 pm ? all going off the first tee.

Saari Shoots 73 to Pace Wildcats in 1st Day of Furman Invite
GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Junior Michael Saari hit a 73 in his first round of golf to pace the Davidson golf team to a 13th place showing in the first day of the 39th annual Furman Invitational on Friday afternoon at the par 72, 6,800-yard Furman University Golf Course.
Davidson as a team shot a 303 for the day, placing it just ahead of North Florida (305) and just three strokes behind East Carolina. Chattanooga’s Jonathan Hodge paced the field with an opening round 69 to give the Mocs a three-stroke lead
Saari carded a 38 on the front nine, but came back with a 35 to finish in 17th place out of 132 golfers. He is tied with 13 other golfers for 17th place with his one over par.
Freshman Bobby Urso is next on the Wildcat leaderboard with a 75 (36-39) to rank him tied for 42nd place.

Judy Excels at Furman Intercollegiate
GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Elon’s Jayson Judy garnered a one-over-par 73, but the Phoenix struggled to a 16th-place tie at 39th annual Furman Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament Friday on the 6,800-yard Furman University Golf Course.
Judy’s score propelled him into a tie for 17th place in the 132-player field while Chattanooga’s Jonathan Hodge turned in a tournament-leading 69 to give the Mocs the early lead in the 24-team standings. Hodge tallied four birdies and only one bogey to fashion a one-stroke advantage over Francis Marion’s Peter McGibney.
In addition to Judy (34-39?73), the Phoenix also received scorecards from Justin Newton (Tied-42nd/36-39?75), Jimmy Lytle (Tied-91st/38-41?79), Phil Bartholomew (Tied-102nd/40-40?80) and Steve Dressel (Tied-128th/43-42?85).
Chattanooga (287) enters the second round of the 54-hole event with a three-stroke lead over second-place South Carolina (290) and five shots ahead of third-place Clemson (292). Vanderbilt (293) and Ohio State (294) round out the top five squads.

Dolezal leads Terriers at Furman Intercollegiate March 28, 2008
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Wofford freshman Adam Dolezal recorded his career-low round Friday in leading the Terrier men's golf team to a 22nd-place tying result following opening round action at the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C. Wofford is tied for 22nd with Old Dominion among the 24 teams on the par 72, 6,800-yard Furman University Golf Course.
Dolezal carded a 37-38--75 (+3) to tie for 42nd among the individuals. The 75 is three strokes better than his previous best of 78, which he posted during the first and second rounds of the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C., Feb. 25.
Next on the leaderboard for the Terriers is sophomore Mike McKenzie in a tie for 83rd. He registered a 39-39--78 (+6) for a one-shot lead over teammate Drew Perry. Perry stands in a tie for 91st after a 41-38--79 (+7).
Sophomore Garrett Medeiros is the last Wofford scorer for the first 18 holes. He posted a 42-39--81 (+9) to tie for 110th. His classmate Kirk Whitehead rounds out the Terrier contingent with a 42-40--82 (+10) to tie for 114th.
Chattanooga holds a three-stroke advantage over South Carolina in the team standings, while the Mocs' Jonathan Hodge is on top of the individuals with a 3-under par 69.
The three-day, 54-hole event will continue with 18 holes each Saturday and Sunday.
