Chattanooga Men’s Golf in Second in Mobile after Day One
Mobile, Ala. --- Despite difficult weather conditions, No. 13 Chattanooga is in second place in the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate with a 36-hole total of 593 (+17). The Mocs trail first-place Louisville, ranked No. 21, by eight shots. No. 37 Mississippi State is in third at 594, while Memphis sits in fourth with a 595.
The Mocs got off to a slow start with a first round score of 11-over par 299. Derek Rende’s 73 (+1) led the way followed by Fredrik Qvicker’s 74 (+2). That placed UTC in fifth place, nine shots behind the Cardinals’ 290 (+2).
“It was not the start we were looking for,” said Head Coach Mark Guhne. “We knew we needed to come out firing in the afternoon.”
Juniors Jonathan Hodge and Ben Rickett led the charge in the afternoon for the Mocs with a pair of one-over par 73’s. Chattanooga shot 294 (+6) in the second round, the low score in the afternoon 18 as Qvicker and Rende added 74’s (+2).
“We were much more consistent in the afternoon,” added Guhne. “It will be a challenge to catch Louisville, but if we want to be the team we think we are, that is a challenge we need to meet.”
Rende leads the Mocs at 147 (+3), tied for fifth place. Qvicker and Hodge are tied for 10th one shot back at four-over, 148. Rickett makes it four Mocs in the top 15, tied for 14th at 150 (+6).
