Elon Edges Furman to Win Wexford Intercollegiate

Lytle, Phoenix Claim Crowns at Wexford Intercollegiate

 

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. ? Led by individual medalist Jimmy Lytle, Elon rallied back from a four-shot deficit over the final 18 holes to claim an 890-891 win over Furman for the team title Tuesday afternoon at the third-annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament.

 

The Phoenix (298-292-300?890) trailed the Paladins (290-296-305?891) in the 15-team standings entering Tuesday’s final round of the two-day, three-round, 54-hole event, played on the 6,828-yard, par-72 Wexford Plantation course. Furman held the lead at the conclusion of each of Monday’s rounds.
 
Both Lytle’s 54-hole score and Elon’s team score were records for the young tournament. Kennesaw State placed third at 898 (297-298-303) while host Francis Marion moved up two positions to finish fourth (294-306-300?900), only 10 strokes behind the Phoenix.
 
Presbyterian (298-301-303?902) finished fifth, followed by East Carolina (299-298-306?903), USC Aiken (307-296-303?906), Winthrop (304-296-307?907), Bowling Green State (311-308-294?913), Wofford (294-307-315?916), George Washington (304-298-318?920), Marshall (306-304-317?927), Davidson (317-309-323?949), Northern Illinois (310-314-325?949) and Oakland (320-310-319?949).
 
Lytle, a senior from Ocean Ridge, Fla., shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday to finish at 6-under-par 210 and cruised to a 9-stroke win. Oliver West of Kennesaw State placed second with a 70-76-73?219 scorecard, while Ben Goforth of Furman (75-72-73?220) and Jayson Judy of Elon (73-69-78?220) tied for fourth. Three players tied for fifth position: Pete Alminas of Winthrop (74-75-72?221), Hugh Morrison of Presbyterian (72-75-74?221) and Garrett Schneider of Furman (71-73-77?221).

 

 

Furman Falls One Stroke Short At Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

 

Hilton Head Island, S.C. -- Furman fired a final round 305 to finish in second on Tuesday at the third-annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament, hosted by Francis Marion University on Hilton Head Island.

 

Ben Goforth (75-72-73=220) posted a one-over 73 to lead the Paladins with a third place finish.  Garrett Schneider (71-73-77=221) placed in a tie for fifth and Austin Reeves and Jonathan Bowden finished at nine-over par to take a share of 16th place.

 

Elon (298-292-300=890) carded a final round 300 to claim the team title on the strength of Jimmy Lytle’s first place finish with rounds of 69, 68 and 72.

Medeiros finishes in top 10 at spring opener

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Wofford sophomore Garrett Medeiros finished in a four-way tie for eighth place leading the Terrier men's golf team to a 10th-place result at the spring-season opening Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. The two-day, 54-hole event was played at the par 72, 6,828-yard Wexford Plantation Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C.

Medeiros, who ended the fall campaign with a second-place tying finish at the ODU/Sea Scape Collegiate in October, registered a 74-73-76--223 (+7) to tie three others for eighth.

Junior Drew Perry garnered his second-straight top-20 result. He tied for 20th after carding a 72-77-77--226 (+10).

Sophomore Kirk Whitehead tallied a 73-79-80--232 (+16) to tie for 42nd, while classmate Mike McKenzie posted a 75-79-82--236 (+20) to tie for 56th.

Rounding out the Wofford contingent was freshman Adam Dolezal, competing in only his second collegiate event. He tied for 63rd following a 24-over par 78-78-84--240.

The Terriers return to the links March 14-15 at the Kauai Collegiate Cup in Princeville, Hawai'i.

Davidson Golf Places T-13th at Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

 

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Davidson concluded its season opener with a final round 323 to finish tied for 13th at the third annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion University. The 54-hole event was played on the 6,828-yard, par 72 Wexford Plantation layout.

Freshman Bobby Urso led Davidson in the individual standings with a two-day total of 235 (77-77-81) placing him in a tie for 52nd.

Other Davidson competitors included Robert Mayo (T-56th/+20), Christopher Rollins (T-58th/+21), David Fowler (T-71st/+28) and Michael Saari (T-75th/+29).

Elon, who entered the final round four strokes back of SoCon foe Furman, carded a 300 to claim the team title, while the Paladins finished in second seven shots clear of Kennesaw State.

Jimmy Lytle of Elon continued his impressive play to win individual medalist honors thanks to a six-under 210 (69-69-72).

The Wildcats return to action March 3-4 at the Lonnie D. Small Tournament hosted by Campbell University at Keith Hills Country Club in Buies Creek, N.C.

 

 

Mocs Men’s Golf Finishes Tied for 11th at Rio Pinar Intercollegiate

 

ORLANDO, Fla.---No. 13 Chattanooga shot a nine-over par 297 in the final round of the Rio Pinar Intercollegiate at the Rio Pinar Country Club in Orlando, Fla., to finish tied with Memphis in 11th-place with a total of 877 (+13).  The tournament was won by host UCF with an 18-under par total of 846.

 

“We didn’t play very well, but we learned some good things,” said Head Coach Mark Guhne.  “Ben and J.T. played solid at the four and five spots.  Every team has a bad tournament.  Hopefully this one is ours for the spring.”

 

Three Mocs tied for 37th to lead the way for the Mocs at 220 (+4).  Ben Rickett, Derek Rende and Fredrik Qvicker were the trio with Rickett carding the second lowest round of the day for Chattanooga, a one-over par 73.  Rende and Qvicker each shot 77. 

 

J.T. Clendenin had the low round of the day for the Mocs with an even-par 72.  Jonathan Hodge added a 75.  The duo tied for 54th with a total of 222 (+6).

 

“It was a blustery day, but everyone had to play in the same conditions,” added Guhne.  “Two or three years ago, this would have been a good showing.  It says a lot about where we have raised our program and expectations.”

 

The Mocs return to action on March 10 and 11 at the Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate at the Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.

 

 

Catamount Golf Slips to Sixth Entering Tuesday's Final Round at Cuthbert Cup

 

Andres Cuenca tied for fourth five strokes back; Desiree Karlsson tied for third, three in arrears

 

Kiawah Island, S.C. - Western Carolina's men's and women's golf teams each slipped into sixth place after Monday's second round at the Cuthbert Cup held on the Osprey Point and Cougar Point Golf Courses. WCU junior Andres Cuenca fell from first into a tie for fourth, five strokes off the pace, while sophomore Desiree Karlsson is in the clubhouse three strokes back, tied for third entering Tuesday's third round.

 

Due to the threat of impending weather, the final round has been changed to a shotgun start by tournament officials with teams teeing off at 8:15 am on Tuesday morning.

 

On the men's side, WCU, which led after the opening 18 holes, stands just six strokes in arrears of both UNC Wilmington and Washington State (579) after carding a team 293 on Monday. Host College of Charleston is third one stroke back at 580, followed by Maryland (581) and Richmond (582) rounding out the top five.

 

Cuenca, who ranks tied for third with nine birdies, shot 75 in the second round to slip into a tie for fourth in the standings at 142. Senior Matt Cook rallied with a two-under, 70, on Tuesday to move into a tie for 22nd with freshman teammate, Caleb Marsh (73-74=147). Rounding out Western's scorers were junior Dustin Funari in a tie for 33rd at with a two-day total of 150 and sophomore Ricky Stout tied for 47th at 153.

 

In the women's tournament, first-round leader College of Charleston continues to lead by three strokes over UNC Wilmington, 586-to-583. Maryland (593) stands third followed by East Tennessee State (596) and Miami (FL) in at an even 600.

 

Karlsson, who was in a four-way tie for first-place on Sunday, is in a five-way tie for third after Monday's second round three-strokes back at 145 to lead the Catamounts, many of which were battling flu-like symptoms. Freshman Josefine Sundh, playing on her birthday, shot a second-round 76 to stand tied for 10th, three strokes behind her fellow countryman.

 

Rounding out WCU's scorers were freshman Katja Dammann in a tie for 26th (74-78=152), sophomore Elin Mickelsson in a tie for 43rd (79-77=156) and senior Kandy Carland in 67th.

In a twist unique to the Cuthbert Cup, both the men's and women's teams will be paired together in Tuesday's final round.

 

 

Third Round of Cuthbert Cancelled, Cougars Win Inaugural Event

 

Kiawah Island, S.C. -- The third round of the Cuthbert Cup was cancelled this afternoon due to inclement weather.   The College of Charleston was declared the winner in the women's tournament, while UNC Wilmington took first in the men's tournament.  The Charleston men's team finished third.  The men's tie at first was broken with Washington State based on the fifth person's score in the second round.

 

Most of the teams had about four to six holes remaining when rain, mixed with thunder and lightning, set in for the afternoon.  At approximately 2:00 p.m. the decision was made to call the round and use the second round results to declare the champions

 

College of Charleston's Steffi Kirchmayr and Courtney Brink tied for individual medalist honors in the women's tournament.  Maryland's Chris Gould earned the same honor on the men's side.

 

The College of Charleston edged UNC Wilmington for the Cuthbert Cup by two points, 1163 to 1165.

 

The College of Charleston men's team travels to the Seminole Intercollegiate Mar. 2-4, while the women's team hosts the Pinehurst Cup Mar. 9-11 in Pinehurst, N.C.
