Western Carolina Golf Hosts Hummingbird Intercollegiate

 Central Florida Leads, Western Carolina Fourth at The Hummingbird Intercollegiate

Catamounts Andres Cuenca and Martin Summer tied for fourth entering final round

 

Sapphire, N.C. ? Nationally-ranked Central Florida carded an opening round three-under, 281, on Monday to lead the 14-team field at The Hummingbird Intercollegiate being held at the par 71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley. Host and defending tournament champion, Western Carolina, is fourth, 13 strokes off the pace after shooting 294 over the opening 18 holes.

 

The second and final round is slated for Tuesday, Nov. 4 with tee times beginning at 9:30 am.

 

UCF, which entered the tournament with a 34th ranking according to GolfStat, holds a two-stroke advantage over second-place Vanderbilt (283), which finished in the second position at last year’s event. The University of Akron is 10 strokes back at 293 in third, followed by Western Carolina (294) and Radford (295), rounding out the top five.

 

A pair of Golden Knights sit atop the individual leader board as UCF’s David Johnson leads teammate Brad Schneider and Vanderbilt’s Hudson Johnson by a stroke, 67-to-68. Schneider posted a tourney-high six birdies on Monday, but could not overtake his teammate for the day one lead.

 

For Western Carolina, defending individual medalist, senior Andres Cuenca, is tied for fourth after firing a one-under, 70, on Monday while a second Catamount, freshman Martin Summer who is playing as an individual, is also in the clubhouse amidst the five-way tie for fourth-place. Joining the Catamount tandem in fourth is Samford’s Bobby Baird, Vanderbilt’s Ryan Haselden and Scott Landreth from Akron.

 

WCU’s Summer leads the tourney in par 5 scoring, playing the longest holes on the day at three-under (4.00), while Cuenca ranks tied for first in par 4 scoring (two-under, 3.82).

 

Juniors Ricky Stout and Drew Miller are tied for 29th on the field after shooting three-over, 74. Senior Dustin Furnari, who was the tournament runner-up a season ago, is tied for 45th after shooting a five-over, 76, with freshman Kyle Wilson rounding out WCU’s team scorers in a tie for 56th, 78.

 

Behind the consistent play of both Miller and Stout ? both of which finished with 14 pars out of the opening 18 holes ? WCU leads the tournament in par scores with 63 through the first round. Cuecna is tied for fourth with four birdies and tied for sixth with 13 pars during his one-under round.

 

In addition to Summer, other Catamounts playing as individuals include junior Cody Walker and sophomore Caleb Marsh, both of which are tied for 53rd following opening round scores of six-over, 77. Junior Benjy Davey is one stroke in arrears, tied for 56th at seven-over, 78, while junior Rylan Lanham carded 40 on both the front and back nines for an even 80, tied for 75th.

SAMFORD MEN’S GOLF IN 11TH PLACE AFTER DAY ONE OF HUMMINGBIRD INTERCOLLEGIATE

--- The Bulldogs’ Bobby Baird fires a first-round score of 1-under 70 to take fourth place in the individual standings ---

 

SAPPHIRE, N.C. --- Samford’s senior men’s golfer Bobby Baird carded a team-best score of 70 (36-34) on Monday to lead the Bulldogs to an 11th-place finish at the 2008 Hummingbird Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina University at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley.

 

Baird, Samford’s native of Knoxville, Tenn., shot a 1-under on Monday and finished the day in a five-way tie for fourth place in the individual standings. The Bulldogs’ senior is only three shots out of first place behind UCF’s David Johnson who carded a tournament-best score of 4-under 67 (33-34).

 

As a team, Samford turned in an opening-round score of 302, a mark well within striking distance of a top-five finish. Radford University is currently the fifth-place team in the tournament with a first-round total of 295.

 

Leading the team portion of the 2008 Hummingbird Intercollegiate is UCF with a combined score of 3-under 281. In second place following day one’s competition is Vanderbilt with a total team score of 283.

 

Along with Baird’s team-leading mark of 70 on Monday, Samford’s Martin Bunt shot a first-round score of 76 (40-36), while Ian Cutting and Tyler Baird both followed with identical scores of 78. Senior Andrew Villarreal followed closely with a day one total of 79 (42-37).

 

The Samford University men’s golf team will resume play in the 2008 Hummingbird Intercollegiate on Tuesday at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley. The two-day competition is being hosted by Western Carolina University.

 

 

Broome Paces Paladins At Hummingbird Intercollegiate

 

Sapphire, N.C. -- Sophomore Matthew Broome paced Furman to a share of 12th place with an even-par 71 in the opening round of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina on Monday at the par-71 Country Club of Sapphire Valley.

 

Furman fired a first round 306 to share 12th place in the 14-team field,

25 strokes behind tournament leader UCF at 281.  Vanderbilt is in second place at one-under 283 with Akron, Western Carolina and Radford rounding out the top five.

 

Broome, playing as an individual, paced Furman with teammates Garland Ferrell, Jonathan Bowden, Daniel Bowden and James Field also shooting three-over 74.

 

UCF’s Davidson Johnson carded an opening round 67 to take a one-shot lead over the Golden Knights’ Brad Schneider and Vanderbilt’s Hudson Johnson.

 

Final round action at the 36-hole Hummingbird Intercollegiate is set to tee-off Tuesday morning.
