Duke overcomes five-shot deficit to win UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate; Spartans finish fifth

FOREST OAKS, NC ? Duke University shot a final round 289 to rally for a four-shot win over Michigan State at the 2008 UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate at Forest Oaks Country Club,

The Blue Devils overcame a five-shot deficit and overtook Michigan on the final day for the win. Duke finished at 869, followed by Michigan State at 873. The Wolverines finished third at 874. Louisville, the defending champion and winner of two of the three previous team titles, finished fourth. Tournament host UNCG was fifth at 888.

Payne Gniewek of Michigan State and Max Scorodo of Notre Dame tied for the individual lead. Both players finished at 213 for the 54-hole tournament, three-under par. UNCG’s Drew Younts had the best score of the day in brutal conditions. Battling wind gusts up over 30 miles per hour all day long, Younts carded a 70 for the second-straight round and finished tied for fourth at even-par 216.
