Chattanooga, Furman Conclude Tournaments on Tuesday

Three Paladins Shoot Even Par On Final Day Of Cardinal Intercollegiate

 

Simpsonville, Ky. ? Daniel Bowden, Matt Broome and Garland Ferrell each carded a final round 72 to help Furman to a ninth place finish on Tuesday at Louisville’s Cardinal Intercollegiate at the par-72 Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky.

 

The Paladins (291-297-289=877) notched their best round of the 54-hole tournament at one-under-par.  Ferrell (70-75-72=217), a junior from Greenville, S.C., finished at one-over to take a share of 24th place.

Freshman Anthony Aloi (71-76-73=220) finished in 36th while Matt Broome (74-75-72=221) and Daniel Bowden (78-71-72=221) each earned a share of 40th.

 

Eastern Kentucky’s Trey Bowling (65-70-65=200) posted a tournament low round of seven-under 65 to rally from a two-stroke deficit and take individual medalist honors on Tuesday.  Kansas State’s Robert Streb (69-69-66=204) finished second with second round leader Espen Kofstad (67-66-72=205) settling for third place.

 

Louisville (281-280-273=834) used a 15-under-par 273 in the final round to claim first place nine strokes ahead of EKU and Kansas State.  Denver and Indiana rounded out the top five.

 

Furman returns to action next week at the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate October 6-7.

Top-Ranked Mocs Finish 11th at Ping/Golfweek Preview

 

TOLEDO, Ohio---The No. 1 Chattanooga Mocs picked the wrong time for an off week finishing 11th at the Ping/Golfweek Preview at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. The Preview is played at the host club of the spring’s NCAA Finals.

 

The Mocs shot a final round 294 (+10), their best round of the tournament.  That put the three-day total at 893 (+41).

 

“We played better today,” said Head Coach Mark Guhne.  “But it was not enough.  It was not our week.  Hopefully we learned a few things about ourselves.

 

“One thing I know we learned, Ben Rickett can flat out play.”

 

Rickett, a senior from England, fired a three-under par 68, the third best round on the day.  Rickett finished tied for eighth with a one-under par total of 212 (71-73-68).  His round included six birdies and three bogeys.

 

Oklahoma State (843) shot an even-par 284, its third straight day shooting the low round of the tournament.  The Cowboys were 16 shots clear of second-place Tennessee (859) and 18 over third-place Georgia (861).

 

Morgan Hoffmann (Oklahoma State) and Robin Wingardh (Tennessee) shared medalist honors at 207 (-6).  OSU also had the third and fourth place finishers in Trent Leon (-4) and Rickie Fowler (-3).

 

Chattanooga junior Derek Rende finished tied for 34th at plus-nine (222), while freshman Stephan Jaeger tied for 49th at 227 (+14).  Jonathan Hodge and Fredrik Qvicker tied for 67th at 233.

 

“We are a much better team than we showed,” added Guhne.  “We’ll go back to the drawing board and look forward to getting back into tournament play.

 

Chattanooga returns to action Oct. 11-13 at the Brickyard Collegiate in Macon, Ga.  The tournament is hosted by UGA at the Brickyard at Riverside.
