Paladins Claim Raines Development Group Intercollegiate Title With Final Round 285
Florence, S.C. -- Three Paladins posted below par final rounds to lead the Furman men's golf team to a three-under par 285 and the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate title Tuesday afternoon at the Country Club of South Carolina.
The win marks Furman’s first tournament championship since claiming the Southern Conference Tournament title in 2004.
“I’m very proud of the guys this week,” said head coach Todd Satterfield. “We got off to a good start, making some key putts, and we were able to hang on down the stretch.”
Furman’s final round 285 bettered the field by eight strokes and helped the Paladins claim a one-stroke win over SoCon rival Western Carolina (295-287-296=878). Paladin junior Jonathan Bowden (70-75-70=215) carded a two-under par 70 to claim second place while senior Chris Gilliland (75-75-70=220) equalled Bowden’s 70 to finish 11th at four-over par for the 54-hole tournament.
Freshman Austin Reeves (79-76-71=226) gave Furman a final round boost with a one-under par 71 in just his third collegiate round of golf. Garrett Schneider (76-72-74=222) fired 74 and senior Ben Goforth (77-72-77=226) carded a 77 to round out Furman’s scores in Tuesday’s action.
Troy’s Michael McGrady (71-769-72=212) took individual honors on the par 72, 7,101-yard layout. McGrady finished three stroke ahead of Bowden and four ahead of Western Carolina’s Matt Cook.
Furman will be back in action September 25-26, when its travels to Newport, R.I., for the Adams Cup of Newport.

Elon Ends Up 10th at Raines Intercollegiate
FLORENCE, S.C. ? Jimmy Lytle finished in a tie for 25th place out of 80 players as Elon ended up in 10th place out of 15 teams in the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament Tuesday afternoon at The Country Club of South Carolina.
Lytle (Tied-25th/74-74-76?224), Jayson Judy (Tied-31st/73-76-76?225), Justin Newton (Tied-44th/73-78-79?230), Phil Bartholomew (Tied-46th/79-77-75?231) and Steve Dressel (Tied-68th/79-79-81?239), who was making his first appearance in a college tournament, all turned in scorecards for the Phoenix for the three-round, two-day tournament on the 7101-yard, par-72 course.
In the team standings, Elon (299-305-306?910) finished ahead of Winthrop (303-314-302?919), Charleston Southern (311-304-304?919), Appalachian State (310-305-309?924), South Carolina-Aiken (311-306-307?924) and Wofford (304-309-322?935).
Furman (298-294-285?877), Western Carolina (295-287-296?878), East Carolina (292-287-301?880), Troy (300-287-293?880), host Francis Marion (291-294-302?887), Georgia College & State University (303-301-300?904), Presbyterian (310-298-299?907), Jacksonville (302-294-311?907) and Samford (301-296-312?907) took the top spots on the leader board.
Golf Finishes Competition at Gopher Invitational
Georgia Southern finishes in 11th place, Lethem tied for 24th place
WAYZATA, Minn. ? Georgia Southern golf concluded its first tournament of the 2007-2008 season, Sunday afternoon, at the Gopher Invitational, held at the 7,020-yard, par-72 Spring Hill Golf Club.
Junior Drew Lethem (Camdenton, Mo.) led the Eagles shooting an 11-over 227 and tying for 24th place. Georgia Southern finished in 11th place, 24 strokes ahead of Princeton.
Ranked No. 16 by the Golf World/Nike coaches pre-season poll going into the tournament, Lamar garnered a solid tournament victory, shooting a 4-over 868 and led the next best competitor by 22 strokes.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” said head coach Larry Mays. “We just need to go back to basics. A lot of it is mental. The course was very difficult and we had cold conditions. So, we’ll break them down tomorrow, and then build them back up the rest of the week.”
The Eagles have a week to prepare for the next tournament, the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, which will be held Monday and Tuesday, Sep. 24 and 25, at Shoal Creek Country Club in Birmingham, Ala.

Terriers conclude play at season-opening tournament

FLORENCE, S.C. -- The Wofford men's golf team concluded its play Tuesday at the season-opening Raines Development Group Intercollegiate on the par 72, 7,101-yard The Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C.
Sophomore Mike McKenzie led the Terriers with an 8-over par 76-72-76--224 to tie for 25th. Classmate Garrett Medeiros earned a 58th-place tying result of 77-74-85--236 (+20).
Teammates Drew Perry and Kirk Whitehead were among a quartet tied for 64th. Perry, a junior, shot a 74-81-83--238 (+22), while Whitehead, a sophomore, tallied a 77-82-79--238 (+22).
Rounding out the Wofford contingent was junior Matt Mielke with an 81-90-84--255 (+39) to garner a 78th-place tying result.
Troy's Michael McGrady won the individual crown with a 4-under par 212, while Furman was the team champion after posting a 13-over 877.
The Terriers will next participate in the Sea Trail Intercollegiate, Sept. 22-23, at the Sea Trail Golf Resort in Sunset Beach, N.C.

UNCG men’s golf wraps up first tourney of season with 16th place finish
TOLEDO, OH ? UNC Greensboro’s men’s golf team shot a final round 315 to finish 16th at the Inverness Intercollegiate.
Nathan Stamey was the Spartans’ top golfer, finishing in 50th place. Stamey fired a final round 78 on Tuesday. Will Bowman carded the Spartans’ low round of the day, shooting a 77 to finish in a tie for 63rd place.
Jonas Blixt of Florida State and Ryan Brehm of Michigan State tied for the individual title. They both set a new tournament record for the lowest 54-hole score with a 210. Brehm carded a 73 on Tuesday, while Blixt shot a 75.
Florida State won the team title, carding a total of 862. The Seminoles, which recorded a tournament low round of 281 on Monday afternoon, topped Michigan State by six shots for the team title. Florida finished third in a field that finished nine of the Top 31 teams ranked by golf stat.
UNCG returns to action September 22 and 23 at the Wolfrun Intercollegiate in Zionsville, IN.

Furman Claims 12th At Scenic City Invitational
Chattanooga, Tenn. -- Ben Goforth notched a one-over par 72 and Jonathan Bowden fired a two-over 73 to lead Furman to a 12th place finish during Tuesday’s final round of the Scenic City Invitational at Council Fire Golf Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Goforth (78-71-72=221), returning to the Paladin lineup after a redshirt year, registered two birdies and an eagle on No. 11 to post Furman’s low round of the day. Bowden (70-69-73=212) completed a strong three round effort at one-under par and in a tie for 13th place.
Charlotte’s Corey Nagy (68-68-67=203) carded a final round 67 to claim individual medalist honors by a three-stroke margin while leading the 49ers (272-271-279=822) to a seven stroke victory.
