Florence, S.C. ? The Chattanooga men’s golf team fired a three-day total 864 to claim its second all-time Southern Conference Championship at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C. on Tuesday afternoon.
It is the Mocs first title since 1987 and first under two-year head coach Mark Guhne. Guhne earned his second Coach of the Year honor after leading Chattanooga to its fourth team title of the 2007 spring season.
The Mocs finished 11 strokes better than runner-up Georgia Southern who carded an 873 to go nine over par for the tournament. Elon placed third with an 882 and Wofford and UNC Greensboro round out the top five.
Two players finished in the top five for the Mocs, including sophomore and Player of the Year, Jonathan Hodge who placed tied for second with Davidson’s Alex Knoll. Hodge fired 73-69-72 for a 214 to go two under par for the tournament. Teammate Derek Rende finished tied for fourth after carding a 217 to go one over par. Rende was tabbed the Freshman of the Year by the league’s coaches.
Individually, UNC Greensboro’s J.D. Bass claimed his first Southern Conference Championship with a 213 three-day total to finish three under par. Bass came into the final round tied for eighth place and headed to the front of the field after carding a low-round 68 to take the individual crown.
Chattanooga receives the SoCon automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships, which will be announced at a later date.
