Western Carolina, Appalachian State, Elon Complete Play in Lonnie D. Small Spring Classic

Western Carolina Men’s Golf Slips to Seventh at Lonnie D. Small Spring Classic

Buies Creek, N.C. ? Western Carolina slipped from sixth into a tie for seventh-place after shooting 312 as a team during Tuesday’s final round of the Lonnie D. Small Spring Classic at the Keith Hills Country Club. First round leader, WCU junior Matt Cook, shot 80 on Tuesday to slip from the top spot into a three-way tie for 15th to lead the Catamounts.

 

Of the top four leading golfers from Monday’s first round, Cook and Campbell’s Matt Evans each slid to 15th, with Richmond’s Jordan Utley and Gardner-Webb’s Ryan Bell falling into a final tie for 11th-place. Radford’s Josh Meador won individual medalist honors with a tournament-record, four-under 140 to win by three strokes.

 

Despite Evans’ troubles on Tuesday, the host Campbell Camels claimed the team championship for a third-straight time, winning by a stroke over a hard-charging Radford Highlander squad which carded a tournament-low 289 in the second round. Elon shaved two strokes off its team score from the first round to the second to shoot 590 in third, followed by Gardner-Webb (606) and Longwood (607) rounding out the top five teams.

 

Cook was followed by redshirt freshman Cody Walker in a five-way tie for 20th with a four-over 148. Senior Tripp Morrow improved by two strokes in the second round to finish tied for 39th with a two-day total of 156, while sophomore Andres Cuenca placed tied for 44th with 157. Freshman Ricky Stout showed the most improvement over the two rounds, firing 79 over the final 18 holes to card a two-round total of 162.

 

As a team, the Catamounts finished tied for fourth in birdies with 22 as Cook finished tied for first with eight and Walker tallied six. The Cats also finished tied for fifth in par 3 scoring (3.30, +12), with Cook also shooting three-under on the par 5 holes (4.63).

 

Western Carolina returns to action next weekend, March 11-13, at the Samford Intercollegiate at the Limestone Springs Golf Club in Oneonta, Ala.

 

Mountaineers Finish 13th at Lonnie D. Small Spring Classic

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Appalachian State University men’s golf team finished 13th at the Lonnie D. Small Spring Classic Men's Golf Tournament hosted by Campbell University.

The Mountaineers shot a 22-over-par 310 in the second round finishing for a final score of 624 to finish 13th in the 15-team field. Campbell won the event with a two-day score of 585.

After a first round of 77, senior Quentin Gill finished tied for 26th in the 82-player field. Gill completed the second round with a three-over-par 75. Sophomore Taylor Hines finished the round with a 79 putting him in a tie for 39th place.

Both sophomore Casey Johnson and senior Dan Gossin finished tied for 51st place. Johnson improved from his first round of 81, finishing with a five-over-par 77. Gossin completed both rounds with a 79. Senior Robert Quick finished the round shooting 80 and tied for 71st place.

Appalachian’s next tournament will be March 12-13 in Jacksonville, Fla. at the Jacksonville Beach Club.

 

 

 

Phoenix Finishes Third at Small Classic
BUIES CREEK, N.C. ? Jayson Judy carded a two-under-par 70 as Elon finished in third place out of 15 teams at the Lonnie D. Small Spring Classic men's golf tournament Tuesday afternoon on the 6,703-yard course at Keith Hills Country Club.

The Phoenix's Justin Newton (Tied-4th/72-72?144), Jimmy Lytle (Tied-6th/72-74?146) and Judy (Tied-6th/76-70?146) all placed among the top-10 golfers in the two-day, two-round event. Radford's Josh Meador (72-68?140) finished first in the 82-player field.

Scott Hockemeyer (Tied-31st/76-78?154) and Phil Bartholomew (Tied-44th/78-79?157) also represented Elon (296-294?590), which ended up behind host Campbell (293-292?585) and Radford (297-289?586).

Gardner-Webb (298-308?606), Longwood (308-299?607), Richmond (298-311?609), High Point (307-305?612), Western Carolina (300-312?612), Guilford (312-303?615), James Madison (312-306?618), Stetson (310-309?619), Villanova (316-307?623), Appalachian State (314-310?624), George Washington (319-308?627) and Dayton (334-324?658).
