Gardner-Webb Downs Appalachian State in Inaugural University Cup

MORGANTON, N.C. -- Gardner-Webb claimed wins in 5-of-8 matches overall to down Appalachian State University, 10-3, in the inaugural University Cup golf challenge on Wednesday at Mimosa Hills C.C.

In the unique match-play format, Gardner-Webb earned wins in 2-of-3 men's singles matches and 3-of-5 mixed four-ball matches to coast to the victory.

Senior Ronnie Christopher got things started on the right foot for Appalachian, as he took a 2-up win over GWU's Matt Renegar in the first match of the afternoon.

Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, that would be their only triumph in the event, as the Bulldogs swept the remaining singles' matches and collected three wins and two splits in the mixed-foursome pairings. All-sqaure finishes for Robert Quick and Mary Kate Bowman and Casey Johnson and Brooke DeHart accounted for the Apps' only other points.

ASU's men return to action next Monday and Tuesday at the Wofford Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C. (Carolina C.C.), and the Appalachian women next travel to the Glade Springs Invitational, April 7-8 in Daniels, W. Va.
