Hokies Take Team Crown; Elon’s Jason Judy Best Individual at Furman Intercollegiate on Final Day
Greenville, S.C. ? Jonathan Bowden and Robert Jamieson both carded even-par rounds of 72 on the final 18 holes of the Furman Intercollegiate to lead the Furman men’s golf team (300-295-291=886) to an eighth-place finish. Virginia Tech (297-286-290=873) won the tournament, holding a four-stroke advantage over second-place Elon (287-299-291=877).
Elon’s Jason Judy turned in a 69 on the final 18 holes to win the individual crown by three strokes. Judy ended play with a 211 (71-71-69).
There was a three-way tie for second place as Jacksonville’s Duncan Stewart, Rhode Island’s Ben Spitz and Stuart Carrihill of Charleston Southern all carded totals of 214.
Matt Hayes, competing as an individual, had the Paladins’ best finish in the tournament, carding a 220 (73-72-75) to finish in a tie for 19th place. Danny Schmieding shot a final round 73 en route to a three-round
221 and a tie for 23rd place. After struggling with an opening-round 78, Jamieson rebounded to shoot back-to-back 72s and end competition tied for 29th overall.
Furman will return to action April 2-3, at the Bradford Creek Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C.
Wofford continues ascent; finishes tied for ninth at Furman Intercollegiate
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Wofford men's golf team again lowered its score from the previous day and finished in a three-way tie for ninth place at the Furman Intercollegiate this weekend at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C. The Terriers improved by 13 shots overall from their opening round tally to their final round score on the par 72, 6,825-yard course.
Sophomore Drew Perry led Wofford throughout the event. He finished in a tie for 19th with a 4-over par 71-75-74--220. Teammates Neil O'Briain and Garrett Medeiros were among seven players tied for 29th after the pair carded 6-over par 222s. O'Briain shot a 78-72-72--222, while Medeiros notched a 77-74-71--222.
Freshman Mike McKenzie earned a 59th-place tying result of 79-74-73--226 (+10). Junior John Gault was the final Terrier in the field, as he registered a 77-81-84--242 (+26) to finish in a tie for 104th.
Elon's Jayson Judy captured the individual medalist honor with a 5-under par 71-71-69--211. Virginia Tech captured the team crown a 297-286-290--873 (+9).
Wofford will return to action when it hosts the 20th annual Wofford Invitational presented by VAULT April 2-3 at The Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C. The 54-hole tournament will feature 14 teams, including two Terrier squads, and five individuals.

Catamount Men’s Golf Falls Off on Sunday; Finishes 20th at Furman Intercollegiate
Greenville, S.C. ? Only one Catamount men’s golfer broke 80 on Sunday as the Western Carolina men’s golf team slipped two positions, finishing 20th at the 38th annual Furman Intercollegiate at the 6,825-yard, on-campus Furman University Golf Club. Patrick Lamb led Catamounts, who shot 920 over the 54-hole event, with a 77 on Sunday to finish tied for 79th.
Virginia Tech (297-286-290=873) won the tournament, holding a four-stroke advantage over second-place Elon (287-299-291=877). Jacksonville and Marshall were tied for third with identical three-round totals of 882, with Old Dominion and East Carolina rounding out the top five tied at 884 apiece.

Junior Matt Cook, who was shooting one-over, 145, entering the final round finished with a final round tally of 81 to fall into a tie for 59th, the highest finishing Catamount. Freshman Ricky Stout fired 80 on Sunday to finished tied for 74th (75-74-80=229), just in front of classmate, Lamb, tied for 79th at 230 (80, 73, 77). Other WCU scorers included Michael Chapin (t-101st, 238) and Tripp Morrow (107th, 243).
The Catamounts return to action next weekend as they travel to Spartanburg, S.C., for the Wofford Invitational at the Carolina Country Club.
Davidson Finishes Tied for 18th at Furman Intercollegiate

Alex Knoll fired an even-par 72 to climb 14 spots up the individual leaderboard, but Davidson carded a 303 for a three-day total of 908 (301-304-303) to finish the annual Furman Intercollegiate in a tie for 18th. The 54-hole event was played on the 6,825-yard, par 72 Furman University Golf Club layout.
After entering the final round of competition just two strokes off the pace, Wildcat sophomore Michael Saari suffered a disappointing five-over 77 to end up in a tie for 19th individually. The native of Lilburn, Ga., fired rounds of 71 and 72, respectively, to sit tied for eighth following two days of play.
Knoll turned in to low round of the day for Davidson to finish at 220
(75-75-72) and in a tie for 29th out of 112 competitors. Steve Mayo and David Fowler both shot 77, but didn?t move up the standings as the duo tied for 91st. Also competing for the Wildcats was freshman Andrew Goyzueta, who concluded at 250 (81-86-83).

The Wildcats will enjoy a lengthy break before hosting the 2007 Palisades Collegiate at Palisades Golf Course in Charlotte, N.C. The 54-hole event will be played on April 9 &10 with two rounds of competition taking place on the opening day.
