Western Carolina Rallies to Finish Sixth at Samford Invitational

Trussville, Ala. ? Battling less than desirable weather conditions, including high winds, Western Carolina sophomore Andres Cuenca tied a tournament-low by carding 66 over the final 18 holes to finished tied for third to help the Catamounts rally to a sixth-place showing at the Samford Invitational. Only two golfers shot the six-under 66 in the three round event, with Cuenca posting the lowest score on the final day at the 6,897-yard Limestone Springs Golf Course.

 

With three individuals in the top 10, Austin Peay State won the team title, shooting a three-round score of 867 to edge New Orleans (868) ? who had the tournament individual medalist, Jose Toledo (209) ? by a stroke. Eastern Kentucky was third with a 54-hole score of 880, with Illinois State (883) and Troy (886) rounding out the top five.

 

Armed with the lowest par-3 scoring in the tournament ? a one-under, 2.92 ? Cuenca moved from a tie for 20th after Monday’s second round into a three-way tie for third place overall. He was also tied for fourth with 33 pars and 13 birdies. His final round of 66 ties his career-low, also shot this season at Liberty’s Frank Landrey Invitational, and is tied for the third-lowest round in school history. Also, Cuenca’s 54-hole score of 213 (75-72-66) is the 10th-best in WCU history.

 

Senior Tripp Morrow carded a three-round total of 221 (68-76-77) to finish tied for 13th to give the Catamounts two inside the top 15. Junior Matt Cook rallied from a tough opening day to finish tied for 40th at 229. Rounding out Western’s scores were freshmen Ricky Stout (t-50th, 234) and Cody Walker (t-55th, 237).

 

Western will take its first weekend off this spring, returning to action in two weeks at the Furman Invitational at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C. Last year, Cook finished second as the Catamounts placed tied for ninth at the highly-competitive tournament.

Gault paces Wofford men's golf at Samford Intercollegiate
ONEONTA, Ala. -- Junior John Gault had his best tournament since donning a Terrier uniform in leading the Wofford men's golf team to a 12th-place finish at the Samford Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday in Oneonta, Ala. The Chapin, S.C., was the squad's top scorer in each of the three rounds.

Gault earned a 24th-place tying result after carding a 71-75-79--225 (+9). The opening round 71, 54-hole total 225, 9-over par and 24th-place finish are all career bests as he concluded play in his sixth tournament of the 2006-07 campaign and seventh overall since his freshman season. His score also was four strokes better than Western Carolina's Matt Cook, who entered the field as the Southern Conference's top player in stroke average and had been listed as the nation's top-rated collegiate golfer by Golf World magazine in November 2006.

Freshman Kirk Whitehead was the next Terrier in the clubhouse with a 43rd-place tying 71-79-80--230 (+14), while classmate James Walker tied for 55th after firing a 78-80-79--237 (+21).

Rounding out the Wofford squad was sophomore Matt Mielke and junior Matt Davis. Mielke tallied an 82nd-place finish of 77-90-89--256 (+40), two shots lower than Davis' 90-83-85--258 (+42) to record an 83rd-place result.

The Terriers finished 12th out of 17 schools with a 297-317-323--937, while Austin Peay State captured the team title with a 3-over par 293-287-287--867. New Orleans' Jose Toledo, who was tied with Gault for ninth after the opening round Monday, surged into medalist honors with a 7-under par 71-69-69--209.

Wofford will next compete March 23-25 at the Furman Intercollegiate on the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.

Furman Finishes 10th at Palmetto Intercollegiate

Aiken, S.C. -- The Furman men’s golf team posted a final round 300 to hold on to 10th place at the 10th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate Tuesday morning at the 6,565-yard Palmetto Golf Club.

 

Robert Jamieson (70-79-74=223) and Garland Ferrell (76-73-74=223), who tied for 31st first place, carded Furman’s best scores of the round at four over par 74.  Jonathan Bowden (74-77-75=226) claimed 40th place at 16 over par with a final round 75.

 

Defending Division II champion and host USC Aiken rallied from an eight-stroke deficit to claim the team title with a final round 280. The Pacers’ Roberto Diaz (76-65-67=208) led the USCA charge and claimed individual honors with a three under 67 on Tuesday.

 

Furman takes a week off before hosting the 38th Annual Furman Intercollegiate March 23-25, at the Furman University Golf Course.

Cougars Place Fourth at the Cleveland Golf/Palmetto Intercollegiate

Harrison Moore shot a 68 in the third round to finish tied for sixth and Scott Glaze totaled a 216 to tie for eighth as the College of Charleston men’s golf team placed fourth in the Cleveland Golf/Palmetto Intercollegiate held this week at the Palmetto Country Club.  USC Aiken won the tournament with a three-round total of 861.  Charleston finished with an 875.

 

Pacer Roberto Diaz won individual medalist honors with a 208 in 54 holes.

 

Following Moore with his 215 and Glaze with his 216 for the Cougars, was Dustin Barr and Ben Dangerfield, who each tied for 26th with a 222.  Dennis McCollum tied for 60th with a 231 to round out the Cougar effort.

 

The Cougars are next in action Sunday, Mar. 25th when they host the Hootie at Bulls Bay at Bulls Bay Golf Course in Awendaw, S.C.

Hodge Fourth, Mocs Fifth at Carter Plantation

HAMMOND, La.--Jonathan Hodge fired a final-round 68 to earn a tie for fourth at the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate.

Hodge, the reigning SoCon Player of the Week, entered the final round tied for 16th. His round of 4-under par gave him a 54-hole total of 1-under par 215. Hodge’s 68 was the second-lowest round of the final round, bested only by Southeastern Louisiana’s James Taverner. Taverner’s closing 67 gave him medalist honors at 4-under par 212.

Freshman Derek Rende survived a quadruple-bogey to shoot 76 and tie for 10th at 2-over par.

The Mocs three-round team total of 23-over par was good for fifth place, one stroke behind Jacksonville State and 24 behind the winning 2-under par mark of Southeastern Louisiana.

The Mocs won the team titles in its last two tournaments, the Rio Pinar Intercollegiate and the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. As a result, Chattanooga has risen to #42 in the Golfweek rankings and #45 in the Golfstat ratings. Those rankings are the highest in the history of the program.

Eagles Finish 10th at Hackler Invitational

STATESBORO, Ga. ? Georgia Southern’s 3-over 288 in the third and final round of the Hackler Invitational helped lift the Eagles to a 10th place finish, Monday, at the par-72, 6,950-yard TPC of Myrtle Beach hosted by Coastal Carolina.

After completing the tournament’s first two rounds Sunday afternoon, the Eagles jumped up six places to finish the competition with a 299-294-291=884 (+20) performance.

Senior Bryan Jones (Atlanta, Ga.) was the Eagles top performer, shooting a 75-69-73=217 (+1) and finishing tied in 23rd place.

No. 11 Lamar University coasted to a first-place finish, carding a 275-278-285=838 (-26), 10 strokes better than runner-up and host Coastal Carolina.

East Tennessee State’s Rhys Davies edged Lamar’s Dawie Van Der Walt by one stroke, recording a 70-65-71=206 (-10) for the individual title.

“We played really well starting out each round and held on strong at the end,” said head coach Larry Mays.  “The play was a bit tougher today, but they hung in there and hopefully we can take the positives from today heading into the weekend’s tournament.”

The Eagles will have little time to rest as they prepare for the 28th Annual Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational, Saturday and Sunday at Forest Height Country Club in Statesboro.  Georgia Southern will play host to 17 other schools, including three of the nation’s top five teams, seven ranked in the top 25 and 11 in the top 50, according to the latest GolfWeek polls.

The field of 18 schools includes: No. 2 Georgia, No. 3 Florida, No. 4 Alabama, defending champion and No. 14 North Carolina, No. 15 Tennessee, No. 16 Texas A&M, No. 21 Minnesota, Arizona, Auburn, Michigan State, Kentucky, South Carolina, North Carolina State, Louisiana State, Augusta State, Ohio State, New Mexico and host Georgia Southern.

The activities begin Friday morning with a practice round that begins at 8:30.  Thirty-six holes will be played Saturday with a first round shotgun start at 8 a.m.  The second round will begin approximately at 1 p.m. later that day.  Sunday’s final 18 holes will begin with an 8 a.m. tee time.  The weekend’s activities will conclude with an awards ceremony beginning at approximately 3 p.m.

ASU Men Finish Seventh at North/South Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Appalachian State University men’s and women’s golf concluded play Tuesday at the North/South Invitational, hosted by Butler University at Jacksonville Golf Club. Appalachian’s men placed seventh among 10 teams and the ASU women tied for ninth in an 18-team field.

Sophomore Casey Johnson was the top Appalachian finisher on either side, as his four-over-par 148 (75-73) tied for 11th in the 61-player men’s field.

Freshman Brooke DeHart paced the ASU women with a 15-over-par 159 (80-79), good for a tie for 19th among 100 individuals in the women’s field.

As a team, the Mountaineer men carded rounds of 304 and 305(+33-609) and finished 37 strokes behind champion Flagler. The Apps’ women shot 316 and 335, tied for ninth with Evansville at 75-over-par 651, 29 strokes back from champion Jacksonville.

Appalachian’s women begin play on Thursday at the NIU Snowbird Invitational in Tampa, Fla. (Pebblecreek G.C.). The men return to action next Friday at the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C.

Davidson Places 13th at Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate

AIKEN, S.C. -- Davidson bettered its opening rounds by two strokes, but didn't move in the team standings as the Wildcats concluded the 10th Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in 13th place at 901 (301-301-299). The 54-hole event was played on the 6,565-yard, par 70 Palmetto Golf Club layout.

 

Alex Knoll paced Davidson in the individual standings, finishing in a tie for 21st out of 82 competitors. The senior from Bethlehem, Pa., opened and closed with a 74, while carding a 73 in the middle round to shoot a two-day total of 221.

 

Sophomore Michael Saari dropped 11 spots on the leaderboard following a final round 76 to sit at 224 (+14). Other Wildcat competitors included Steve Mayo (T-48th/+18), David Fowler (T-57th/+20) and Ty White (T-78th/+29).

 

Tournament host and two-time defending champ USC Aiken, battled from eight strokes back to claim its third straight title. The Pacers fired a tournament-low 280 in their third round of play to record an 861 (299-282-280) and pass the Virginia Tech Hokies, who ended at 867 after a disappointing 294 Tuesday.

 

Like his club, the Pacers' Roberto Diaz took individual medalist honors, bettering East Carolina's Andre Thorsen by two swings. After opening with a 76, Diaz played his final 36 holes in eight-under-par to shoot a 54-hole score of 208 (-2).

 

Founded in 1892, Palmetto is recognized as the fourth oldest golf course in the United States and holds the oldest membership certificate to the USGA still in existence.

Elon Ends Up Eighth at Palmetto

AIKEN, S.C. ? Jayson Judy posted a three-over-par 73 as Elon finished in eighth place out of 15 teams at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate men's golf tournament Tuesday on the 6,565-yard course at Palmetto Golf Club.

 

The Phoenix trio of Jimmy Lytle (Tied-12th/68-72-77?217), Justin Newton (15th/69-73-76?218) and Judy (Tied-16th/75-71-73?219) seized top-20 finishes in the 83-golfer field of the two-day, three-round event. Host South Carolina-Aiken's Roberto Diaz (76-65-67?208) claimed medalist honors for the 54-hole tournament.

 

Phil Bartholomew (Tied-66th/80-78-75?233) and Scott Hockemeyer (Tied-76th/80-82-76?238) also represented Elon (292-294-300?886), which finished behind South Carolina-Aiken (299-282-280?861), Virginia Tech (286-287-294?867), Nebraska (293-297-282?872), College of Charleston (300-290-285?875), St. John's (297-293-291?881), East Carolina (294-293-296?883) and Virginia Commonwealth (306-292-286?884).
