INDIANAPOLIS---The NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Committee announced the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will serve as host to the 2008 regional and the 2010 national championships.

The 2008 East regional tournament will be held at Council Fire Golf Club, while the 2010 NCAA championships will return to The Honors Course.

Council Fire Golf Club has been the site of events for both the PGA and Senior PGA Tours as well as many local PGA section events.  The college game is no stranger to Council Fire, as the course has previously hosted the Southern Conference Men’s Championships.

The Honors Course has hosted the top events in amateur golf.  In addition to the 1996 NCAA Championships, The Honors has witnessed the 1991 United States Amateur, the 1994 Curtis Cup, and the 2005 United States Mid-Amateur.  At the 1996 NCAA Championships, 14,694 spectators flocked to the venue over four days of competition to watch Tiger Woods claim the individual crown.  The 1996 championships are still regarded by many as the finest in the history of the event.

“The 1996 championships are still remembered as the best student-athlete experience at any championship,” said Mike Hermann, Director of Athletics at Towson University and chair of the Division I Men’s Golf Committee.  “We were excited when we received the bid and the decision to bring the championships back (to The Honors) in 2010 was an easy one for the committee.”

The committee also rewarded Chattanooga with the selection of the 2008 regional.  “The Regional was another easy decision for the committee, said Hermann.”  “UTC and the city have hosted a number of regionals as well as championships over the years.  It made perfect sense to award both bids.”

Chattanooga Chancellor, Dr. Roger Brown:

“I am very pleased that the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was again selected by the NCAA to host both the 2008 men’s golf regional and the 2010 national championships.  We have hosted the I-AA title game for the past 10 years as well as women’s basketball tournament games the last two seasons, so the NCAA knows that we are at the top of our game in the national spotlight.  I have full confidence that UTC will represent the city well as host of these two great events.”
