Georgia Southern In 14th At NCAA East Regional

The teams played in extremely windy conditions in the afternoon and no squads broke par on Friday. Nine individuals registered subpar rounds. First-round leader Georgia shot a 6-over-par 294 on Friday and holds a two-shot lead after 36 holes.


Georgia has a two-round total of 2-over-par 578 and is followed by UNLV at 580. Wake Forest stands in third with a two-round total of 581.

Freshman Ryan LeFevre had the best round for the Eagles on Friday, shooting a one-under par 71, putting him in a tie for 15th at two-over par for the tournament.  Senior Drew Bowen’s four-over 76 on Friday put him at four-over for the weekend, in a tie for 27th. Freshman Jordan Johnstun is tied for 85th after a second round total of 81. Senior Jon David Kennedy shot a nine-over and is tied for 99th heading into the final round of competition.  Junior Bryan Jones shot a seven-over 79 and is tied for 112th.


Senior Taylor Wood of Southern California shot a 3-under-par 69 and leads the individual race. Wood carded a 2-under-par 70 on Thursday for a 5-under-par tournament total of 139.


Texas Tech is fourth at 582 and North Carolina sits in fifth at 585. Coastal Carolina had the low round of the day with an even-par 288. The Chanticleers (589) jumped from 17th to sixth heading into the final round. Charlotte shot a 2-over-par 290 in the second to move from 14th place to a tie for sixth.

Auburn (590), Southern California (592), UCLA (592) and Georgia State (596) and South Carolina (597) are still in contention to advance following Saturday's play.

 

The top-10 squads in the 27-team field, plus two individuals not on those teams, advance to the NCAA Championship, which begins May 31 in Sunriver, Ore.


Saturday's final round tee times begin at 7 a.m.  Georgia Southern, who will pair with Rhode Island and Jacksonville, will tee off from the 1st tee at 8:35 a.m.

ORLANDO, FL - Western Carolina sophomore Matt Cook rallied to shoot a 74, 12 shots better than his opening round score, on the second day of the NCAA East Regional, played at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club. Cook, who is the first Catamount to play in the NCAA men's postseason, will wrap up his tournament with 18 holes on Saturday.

Cook looked to be in for another long day Friday, getting a double bogey and a single bogey through his first five holes. However, he birdied the par three sixth and played even par over his final 12 holes with two birdies and two bogeys.
