GSU Finishes Ninth At Courtyard By Marriot Intercollegiate

AUBURN, AL - The College of Charleston Men's Golf Team finished 11th at the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate held at the Auburn University Club Sunday after shooting a 315 on the day and a 934 over the three day tournament.

 

Auburn University took home first place honors shooting an 860 in the tournament with Charlotte (881) and Mississippi (883) finishing second and third respectively.  Auburn also had the top three finishers in the event with Stuart Moore finishing seven strokes ahead of his closest competitor to win medalist honors.

 

Scott Larkin had a strong showing for CofC as he finished tied for 13th after shooting a 73 on the final day for a three day total of 221.  Nick Hughey finished tied for 47th after shooting a 234 over the course of the tournament with Gari Maton finshing tied for 54th finishing four strokes behind Hughey with a 238. 

 

Soonam Kim finished with a 243 and Tim Ferguson finished with a 251 to round out the tournament for the Cougars.

 

The Tigers earned their third straight win in the Hitchcock and their 10th in 12 years the same day in which the tournament's namesake passed away. Former Auburn athlete Billy Hitchcock died early Sunday at the age of 89. He was a halfback from 1935 to 1937 and became the first Auburn football player to score a touchdown in a bowl game during the 1937 Bacardi Bowl.

CARY, NC ? Georgia Southern’s Drew Bowen tied for fifth in the 2006 Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate after firing a final round 66.   The Eagles finished 9th as a team, at six-over 870. 

 

Kentucky won the event, finishing the weekend at ten-under 854.  Duke took home runner up honors finishing at six-under 858, while North Carolina came in third at four-under 860. Duke’s Ryan Blaum won individual honors, finishing at fourteen-under 202.  Tulsa’s Nicolas Geyger came in second at eight-under 208. 

 

Bowen, whose final round 66 was a career best, led the Eagles with his 5th place finish.  Freshman Ryan LeFevre finished tied for 30th at four-over par after shooting a final round 74. Junior Bryan Jones and senior Jon David Kennedy tied for 38th at six-over par 222.  Freshman Jordan Johnstun finished tied for 60th at ten-over par.

 

Georgia Southern returns to action on April 17 as the team competes in the 2006 Southern Conference Championships in Charleston, S.C.
