The Southern Conference named Western Carolina’s Tripp Morrow its Men’s Golfer of the Week and Elon’s Samantha Widmer its Women’s Golfer of the Week for the week ending March 21.

Morrow remains the only Catamount men’s golfer to ever receive the accolade, as this week’s honor marks only the second time that a Catamount men’s golfer has been selected golfer of the week. Morrow also earned the honor on April 7, 2005.

A junior, Morrow shot an opening round 82 at the 19-team El Diablo Intercollegiate, but rebounded to finish ninth after posting rounds of 69 and 72 to conclude the event. Morrow recorded his sixth career top 10 finish and first of the campaign at the El Diablo, helping to lead Western Carolina to a sixth-place (tied) finish.

The Forest City, NC, native’s final two-round total of 141 ranks as the third-lowest of his career.

Widmer fired a career-best two-under-par 70 in the final round of the Shamrock Invitational to claim medalist honors at the event. Her three-round cummulative total of 228 edged out Bucknell’s Amy Loughney total of 230 by one stroke and gave Widmer first place among the 74 competitors at the event held at the Tega Cay Golf Club in Tega Cay, SC.

A sophomore from Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, Widmer’s first-place finish led Elon to the overall team Shamrock Invitational crown.
