GAINESVILLE, FL - The Georgia Southern golf team shot a final round 295 to finish the Gator Invitational with a score of 895 (+55) in 12th place.  Host school Florida won the team title with a three round score of 855 (+15) for a six-shot win over second place Tulsa.  Tulsa's Sam Korbe won individual honors, defeating Florida's Brett Stegmaier on a playoff hole.

 

Georgia Southern was led in the tournament by senior Drew Bowen who shot a final round, two-under par 72 and finished at 18-over par (228). Senior Jon David Kennedy shot a final round 74 finishing at eight-over par, tied for 16th. 

 

Freshman Jordan Johnstun finished at 21-over par (231).  Junior Bryan Jones fired a 226(+16). Freshman Ryan LeFevre shot a final round 77 to finish his first collegiate tournament at 230 (+20).

 

"We played two very solid rounds and had a hiccup in the middle," head coach Larry Mays said.  "This weekend's tournament is very vindicitave of how the season has gone so far, we have had trouble putting three rounds together. If we can get three solids rounds together, we will be very successful this year."

 

Georgia Southern returns to action Monday, Feb. 27 as it travels to Westlake Village, Calif. to participate in the Ashworth Intercollegiate hosted by Southern Cal.

SILER CITY, NC ? The UNC Greensboro men’s golf team defended its Carolina Cup title for the third straight year with a narrow 7-6 victory over High Point in this annual Ryder Cup style format golf event, which took place in snow, ice and sleeting conditions at the 6,639-yard par-72 Siler City County Club.

 

In singles play, UNCG’s victories included Kent Copeland over Zach Pranger 5 & 4, Kyle Stockton took down Andrew Mespelt 1-up, David Heyen won 2 & 1 over Daniel Windoff and Burton Wood was victorious by forfeit over Patrick Rutter.

 

High Point garnered singles victories from Ryan Wilson over JD Bass 3 & 2 and Marc Issler over Ryan Heisey 2 & 1.

 

In the doubles events, the High Point duo’s of Issler and Mespelt won 2 & 1 over Ryan Heisey and Stockton, along with Brian Hayes and Windoff winning 1-up over UNCG’s Bradley Leeper and Heyen.

 

UNCG’s Lowder and Bass picked up a 3 & 2 doubles win over Wilson and Rutter.

 

The scoring rules are one point for a win and .5 point for a half/tie.
