SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. ? Lamar University holds a four-shot lead over Charlotte after two rounds at the Mid Pines Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament.
Chattanooga’s John Hodge is the individual leader after firing a pair of 68’s in Monday’s two rounds. He holds a one-shot lead over Chadd Cocco of St. Mary’s (CA). Brian Grossman from Stephen F. Austin and the Maryland duo of John Eades and Tyler Whitman sit two shots off the pace in a tie for third.
UNC Greensboro, the tournament host, is in fifth place in the team standings, 12 shots off of the pace. Jake Lowder and J.D. Bass are in a tie for ninth place individually, four shots behind Hodge.
Maryland’s Eades was the leader after Monday’s first 18 holes, firing an opening round 65. Eades fired a 35 on the front nine and a six-under 30 on the back to record the second lowest opening round score in the tournament’s five-year history. He had one eagle and five birdies in the opening round, playing the Par 5’s at four-under. Eades bested Richmond’s Jordan Utley, who fired a 67 in the opening round including a five-under 31 on the front side. Utley faded in the afternoon, however, shooting a 74 to sit in a tie for 12th entering Tuesday’s final round.
UNCG was fifth after the opening round, seven shots behind team standings leader Lamar, who shot a 279 in the opening round thanks to four players shooting under par. Andrew Landry was Lamar’s top player in the opening round, firing a 68 to tie for third place, individually. After two rounds, Dawie VanDerWalt and Justin Harding are Lamar’s top golfers, sitting in a tie for sixth place, three shots off the lead.
The Spartans were paced in the first 18 holes by Lowder and defending tournament champion Nathan Stamey, who both fired one-under 71 in the opening round.
Wofford junior Dustin Adair shot a 4-under par 68 during the second round to move into a tie for 33rd as the Wofford men's golf team stands in 16th place following the first day of competition at the Mid Pines Intercollegiate in Southern Pines, N.C.
Adair started the day 5-over par, then topped it by shooting nine strokes less on the second 18 to record a 36-hole 77-68--145 (+1) to tie for 33rd among the individuals.
Seniors Marshall Swails and Adam Dox are the next Terriers on the list. Swails carded a 4-over par 74-74--148 to tie for 56th, while Dox is in a tie for 65th after registering a 76-73--149 (+5).
Rounding out the Wofford contingent was a pair of freshmen making their collegiate debuts. Neil O'Briain posted a 76-74--150 (+6) to tie for 70th, while Drew Perry shot a 74-78--152 (+8) to earn an 81st-place tie.
The Terriers are in 16th in the team standings after rounds of 300-289--589 (+13). Lamar leads the pack with a 16-under par 279-281--560, four shots ahead of Charlotte.
The third and final round gets underway with a shotgun start on Tuesday at 8:15 am.
University of Tennessee Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Georgia Southern golf team shot a first round 281 (-3) followed by a second round 285 (+1) to finish in third place after the first day of the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions.
The Eagles one-over (566) total placed them in third place and two strokes behind Alabama who finished the day in second place with a 564 (-1). The University of Tennessee is leading after the first day, shooting 268 (-16) and 278 (-6) in the first two rounds and ending with a 546 (-22) total.
Senior Jon David Kennedy led the Eagles, carding a first round 67 (-4) and a second round 70 (-5) to finish the day in a tie for sixth place at five-under par.
"We got off to a good start this morning and continued to play solid in the afternoon," head coach Larry Mays said. "This is a tough course with difficult greens and I am very pleased with the way that we are handling it. I hope that they continue to play this well tomorrow and we will see where we end up."
Seniors Jonathan Shaw (73-68=141 t/13th) and Drew Bowen (70-73=143 t/22nd), junior Toshi Hirata (78-74=152 t/68th) and freshman Jordan Johnstun (71-76=147 t/46th) rounded up the team play for Georgia Southern.
Sophomore Chris Smith fired a 74 (+3) and a 71 (E) to finish three-over par in individual play.
The College of Charleston men's golf team stands in 11th place after shooting an opening-day, two-round total of 577 in the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions hosted by the University of Tennessee at the Holston Hills Country Club (par 72; 6,932 yards).
The Cougars shot an opening round 294 and a 283 in the second round. UT has an incredible 18 shot advantage after firing an amazing 22-under-par two-round total of 546 (268-278).
CofC senior Kellen Altman is currently tied for 13th after carding a 1-under-par 141. Altman carded an opening round 71 and finished with 70 in the afternoon session.
