Charleston's McDonald wins first match

Charleston, S.C. -- College of Charleston senior golfer Bruce
McDonald defeated Chris Nallen in the first hole of sudden death in his
opening match at the 102nd Amateur Championship being held at Oakland Hills
Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

McDonald, who had a 73.45 stroke average for the Southern
Conference champion Cougars last spring, took at 1-up lead into the 18th
hole but bogeyed to force the decisive 19th hole.

McDonald, who finished 10th in last season's SoCon Tournament, made
par at the par-3, 17th hole to take his 1-up lead.

McDonald's highest finish of 2002 was a sixth place finish at the
LSU Spring Invitational held in Baton Rouge, La. (March 1-3). His low round
for the Cougars was a 67 in the second round of the Cleveland Golf Augusta
Invitational (April 5-7).

The Harare, Zimbabwe native, won the 2000 Lowcountry (Charleston,
S.C.) Amateur championship and finished 2nd in the 2002 South Carolina
Amateur championship.

Wofford alum McGirt makes ace

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Former Wofford golfer
William McGirt recorded the only hole-in-one in the U.S.
Amateur Championship's first two days when he aced the
South Course's 168-yard par-3 13th hole with a 7-iron.

The feat contributed to an 18-hole total of 76 on his
second round; however, his two-round total of 151 missed
the cutoff to qualify him to continue play at the event.

McGirt, who graduated in 2001, was a four-year standout
with the Terriers. He was the Southern Conference
individual champion in his senior season.
