GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- The 19th-ranked Hokies of Virginia Tech fired
a final-round 284 on Sunday, March 24 to win a second consecutive Furman
Intercollegiate title with a three-round 868 total. Furman and Coastal
Carolina, which entered the final round tied for the lead, each carded a
289 to finish in a tie for second, four strokes off the Hokie pace.
After shooting a first-round 299 to land in sixth, it looked like Virginia
Tech's chances of becoming repeat champions were slim. After all, the last
time a team won back-to-back Furman Intercollegiate titles was 1992-93,
when Clemson accomplished this feat. The Hokies moved into a tie for
second with a tournament low 285 on Saturday, however, and then posted
another tournament best for the weekend with Sunday's 284 to defeat Furman
and Coastal by four shots. In addition, the Hokies took medalist honors
when Brendon De Jonge carded a 71 to finish at 211, one stroke ahead of
Furman's David Sligh (N. Augusta, S.C.) and East Carolina's Jonathan Hill.
Sligh's final round 70 was the best on the Furman team, while Vance Embry
(Dalton, Ga.) added a 71, Matt Davidson (West Windson, N.J.) contributed a
73, and Noble Judy (Nashville, Tenn.) carded a 75. Kirk Satterfield, the
defending Furman Intercollegiate individual champion, shot 83 and ended the
tournament tied for 80th with a 233 total.
De Jonge, meanwhile, was assisted by Chris McKeel's 68, Johnson Wagner's
73, and Ryan Stinnett's 72. Brian Krusoe was Tech's non-counter on the day
after firing a 74.
Furman's "B" team recorded its best round of the tournament on Sunday with
a 302. The Paladin "B" team was led by Ryan Potter's (Greenville, S.C.) 72
(231, 67th), Jay Mcknight's (Bluffton, S.C.) 75 (231, 67th), Wyman
Whitesides' (Florence, S.C.) 78 (233, 80th), and Rob Langley's (Atlanta,
Ga.) 77 (235, 91st).
The Paladins will be in action again March 31 through April 1 at the August
State Cleveland Invitational. The Paladins will return home April 19-21,
to host the Southern Conference Tournament at the 6,800-yard, par 72,
Furman University Golf Course.
