Furman Holds Share of Lead Entering Final Round of Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- Though Furman and Coastal Carolina are tied
atop the leaderboard after two rounds at the 33rd annual Furman
Intercollegiate, it was the 19th-ranked Hokies of Virginia Tech who made a
major move on Saturday, carding a 285 to move from sixth into third, one
stroke off the lead pace of 583.

The Paladins carded a 292 in round two, led by Matt Davidson's 72, Vance
Embry and David Sligh's 73s, and a pair of 74s by Kirk Satterfield and
Noble Judy. Davidson and Sligh are tied for second with three others at
142 after Tech's Brendon De Jonge added a 69 to his first-round 71 and took
over the top spot with a two-day 140. Meanwhile Satterfield, the defending
individual champion, and Judy are tied for 29th at 150, and Embry is 46th
at 152.

De Jonge birdied the par five second hole, but gave back a stroke on the
par three four before an eagle at the 477-yard, par 5 sixth put him at two
under. Another birdie on hole 11 took him to three under, and he went to
minus-four with yet another birdie on the par five 15. Again the par
threes struck, however, and he bogeyed number 16 to finish three-under at
the 6,800-yard, par 72 Furman University Golf course.

In addition to De Jonge's 69, the Hokies counted a 71 by Johnson Wagner,
who sits in 20th with a two-day, 148 tally, and a pair of 73s by Brian
Krusoe (13th, 147), and Chris McKeel (29th, 150). Coastal Carolina tallied
the second lowest round of the day, with a 287 on the strength of a 70 by
Rafael Vera (7th, 144), a 71 by Alex Larrazabal (13th, 147), and 73s by
Dale Ketola (9th, 145) and Pat Stolpe (46th, 152).

Entering Sunday's final round, there are 10 golfers within five strokes of
the individual lead, and five teams within 10 strokes of the leading team
pace.

Virginia Tech is attempting to defend its 2001 Furman Intercollegiate
Title, while the hosting Paladins are trying to win their home tournament
for the first time since 1986.

The Paladins will pair with Coastal Carolina and Virginia Tech on Sunday,
teeing off hole number one beginning at 12:40 p.m. Furman's "B" team,
which is 22nd after firing a 311 on Saturday, will tee off number 10
