Newport, R.I. (Oct. 9, 2002) The East Tennessee State men's golf team tied their best finish of the young season, finishing sixth after Wednesday's third and final round of the Adams Cup from Newport National Golf Club in Newport, R.I.
The Buccaneers had a very strong third round, shooting a tournament-best 280 to close out the competition. Every Buccaneer shot their best round of the tournament in Wednesday's play. The torrid final round got the Bucs within just eight strokes of team champion, Michigan State.
Sophomore Marcos Trejos (San Jose, Costa Rica), matched the best score of the final round and the best of his career with a 68. His round propelled Trejos into a tie for third (75-71-68=214) at even par, the highest finish of his career and ETSU's best individual finisher of the season.
Senior James Johnson (Barbados) also had a strong round, shooting a 2-under-par 70 to finish in a tie for eighth at 2-over-par (71-75-70=216).
After shooting an 82 in his second round of play, sophomore Jeremy Hobson (Thonotosassa, Fla.) rebounded by firing a third-round 70. The best round of Hobson's career moved him into a tie for 34th (74-82-69=225).
Sophomore Chase Baldwin (Brandon, Fla.) was the next ETSU finisher, tying for 58th (80-78-73=231) after shooting a 73, improving his second round score by five strokes. Senior Adam Riddering (Maple Grove, Minn.), rounded out ETSU's tournament, finishing in a tie for 67th (82-77-75=234).
ETSU returns to the links on Oct. 21-22 for the Tournament of Champions from Knoxville, Tenn.

Furman
Newport, Rhode Island-- The Furman men's golf team shot a final round 295
to claim 15th place at the Adams Cup of Newport in Newport, Rhode Island,
Wednesday. The Paladins (312-306-295=913) opened the day's play with a 306
in the suspended second round before firing its best round of the tourney.
After shooting a 78 in Tuesday's opening round, junior Buddy Davis
rebounded by posting scores of 76 and 73 in the second and third rounds,
respectively. Davis, a native of Orlando, Fla., finished 40th.
Furman sophomore Jay McKnight shot the Paladins' low round of the
tournament firing a 71 in the final round. McKnight joined teammate Noble
Judy in a tie for 50th with a three-round total of 229.
Michigan State claimed the team title with an 873, three strokes better
than second place Texas A&M. Kasper Jorgenson of Georgia State totaled a
four under par 210 to claim the individual medalist honors.
The Furman men's golf team returns to action at the Duke Golf Classic on
October 21-22.
