SoCon volleyball players of the week announced

Sweet, Martin and Bergjans honored

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its volleyball players of the week on Monday for matches played Sept. 21-27. UNC Greensboro outside hitter Allie Sweet was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Mercer libero Aubri Martin was named Defensive Player of the Week, while the Bears’ Sammi Bergjans was tabbed Setter of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.
 

Sweet, who won the honor for the second consecutive week, averaged 5.71 kills per set as UNCG got a pair of wins over Western Carolina last weekend. On Sept. 25, the junior had 19 kills, 11 digs, one solo block and an ace in a sweep of the Catamounts. The next day, the product of Woodstock, Georgia, recorded another double-double, finishing with 21 kills, 12 digs, six blocks and two aces in a four-set win. Sweet currently leads the NCAA in points (294.0) and total kills (252).

 

Martin anchored the Mercer defense as the Bears recorded a pair of sweeps over The Citadel. On Sept. 25, the junior had 18 digs, one assist and an ace in the contest. In the rematch on Sept. 26, the native of Green Cove Springs, Florida, had 15 digs in the victory. In the team’s last five matches, Martin has recorded double digits in assists.

 

Bergjans paced the Mercer offense over the weekend, averaging 11.83 assists per set. In the first match against The Citadel, the junior logged 32 assists, eight digs and five blocks. The native of Wentzville, Missouri, finished with double-double in the second match of the week, logging 39 assists, 10 digs, three aces and a block.

 

UNC Greensboro travels to Wofford for matches on Oct. 2-3. Mercer plays at ETSU on Oct. 2-3.

Also nominated for setter of the week: Kennedy Boatman (ETSU), Izora Gragg (UNCG), Alison Ohlinger (Samford), Ashley Reynolds (Chattanooga), Morgan Petelin (Tennessee Tech), Katie Boney (Western Carolina), and Maddy Frazier (Wofford)
