SoCon volleyball players of the week announced
Golden, Gorman and Bruntmyer honored
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its volleyball players of the week on Monday for matches played Nov. 3-9. Samford middle blocker Greer Golden was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Furman middle blocker Tennyson Gorman was named Defensive Player of the Week, while the Bulldogs’ Shea Bruntmyer was tabbed Setter of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.
Golden averaged 3.14 kills per set, while hitting .656 in a pair of conference wins for Samford last week. The senior set a school record in the team’s sweep of Chattanooga on Nov. 5, finishing with a perfect 1.000 attack percentage. She finished the contest with 12 kills and three blocks. The next day, the native of Mountain Brook, Alabama, had 10 kills, two digs and two blocks in a four-set win over Western Carolina.
Gorman, who also won the honor of Sept. 29, anchored the Furman defense at net, averaging 2.33 blocks per set for Furman last week. In a four-set win over rival Wofford on Nov. 6, the sophomore logged 10 blocks, seven kills and four digs, helping the Paladins to their first victory of Wofford since 2021. On Nov. 8, the Franklin, Tennessee, native registered a career-best 11 blocks, eight kills, three aces and a dig in a five-set win over ETSU, ending the Bucs their first conference loss of the season. Gorman leads the SoCon in total blocks (142), which is fourth in the NCAA, and blocks per set (1.43).
Bruntmyer, who won the honor for the third time this season, led the Samford offense in its two victories. The sophomore logged 26 assists and four digs in the team’s win against Chattanooga. The product of Abilene, Texas, finished with 29 assists and five digs versus Western Carolina. Bruntmyer also had an ace in both contests.
Samford hosts Mercer on Friday, and The Citadel on Saturday. Furman travels to Western Carolina on Friday, and Chattanooga on Saturday.
