SoCon volleyball players of the week announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its volleyball players of the week on Monday for matches played Oct. 27-Nov. 2. Wofford outside hitter Chloe Smith was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Mercer libero Aubri Martin was named Defensive Player of the Week, while UNCG’s Gabby Seeds was tabbed Setter of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.

Smith averaged 4.50 kills per set in a pair of sweeps for Wofford last week. On Halloween, the sophomore had 13 kills, nine digs, one ace and one block. The next day, the native of Louisville, Kentucky, recorded a double-double, finishing with 14 kills, 11 digs, one ace and a block. Smith is currently sixth in the SoCon in kills (270).

Martin averaged 6.00 digs per set in Mercer’s two conference matches last week. The sophomore logged 19 digs, four assists and two aces in a sweep at The Citadel on Oct. 30. The product of Green Cove Springs, Florida, had a double-double in the team’s upset four-set win over Furman on Nov. 2, finishing with 23 digs and 11 assists. Martin is currently second in the league in digs per set (4.74).

Seeds, who also won the honor on Oct. 20, led the UNCG offense, averaging 12.17 assists per set for the Spartans. The Plano, Texas, native had 37 assists, four digs, one ace and one block in a sweep of Western Carolina on Oct. 31. The next day, the sophomore logged 36 assists, eight digs and two blocks in a three-set victory against Chattanooga. Seeds is second in the conference in digs (761) and digs per set (9.76).

Wofford plays at Furman on Nov. 6, and Mercer on Nov. 8. Mercer hosts UNCG on Nov. 7. UNCG plays at The Citadel on Nov. 8.
