SoCon Women’s Tennis Championship pairings announced
No. 71 Furman claims top seed for the 28th time
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman has earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championship, which will be contested on April 16-18 at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The 71st-ranked Paladins, who captured their 28th regular season crown, will enter the tournament with a 15-4 overall record and a 7-0 mark in SoCon matches. Furman defeated ETSU, 6-1, in a battle of conference unbeatens to clinch the regular season title on April 11.
The Paladins will face No. 8 seed Western Carolina in the quarterfinals of the tournament at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday. This will be the third consecutive year that the two teams meet in the conference tournament, with Furman winning the last two matchups.
No. 4 seed Wofford went 11-7 overall and 4-3 in SoCon play and will take on No. 5 seed Samford, which enters the tournament 11-10 overall and 3-4 in league matches, at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday. The Terriers were victorious in the first matchup of the season, claiming a 4-3 victory on March 28.
In the bottom half of the bracket, second-seeded ETSU faces No. 7 Mercer at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. The Buccaneers defeated the Bears, 5-2, in Macon on March 26. The two squads last met in the tournament in the 2024 semifinals, which ended in a ETSU 4-1 victory.
The final matchup of the quarterfinals pairs No. 3 seed Chattanooga and No. 6 seed UNCG at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. In the first meeting of the season, the Mocs claimed a 5-2 win on March 15.
Friday’s semifinals are at 10 a.m., with Saturday’s title match set for 1 p.m.
Among current members, Furman owns a league-best 22 SoCon tournament titles, while Chattanooga has won five and ETSU has won three.
